Claims
- 1. A purified polypeptide, the amino acid sequence of which comprises SEQ ID NO:5.
- 2. The polypeptide of claim 1, wherein the polypeptide is insulinotropic.
- 3. A method of treating a subject with diabetes, comprising administering to the subject the polypeptide of claim 1 in an amount that has an insulinotropic effect.
- 4. The method of claim 3, wherein the subject has type 2 diabetes.
- 5. A purified polypeptide, the amino acid sequence of which consists of SEQ ID NO:5.
- 6. A purified polypeptide, the amino acid sequence of which comprises SEQ ID NO:6.
- 7. The polypeptide of claim 6, wherein the polypeptide is insulinotropic.
- 8. A method of treating. a subject with diabetes, comprising administering to the subject the polypeptide of claim 6 in an amount that has an insulinotropic effect.
- 9. The method of claim 8, wherein the subject has type 2 diabetes.
- 10. A purified polypeptide, the amino acid sequence of which consists of SEQ ID NO:6.
- 11. A purified polypeptide, the amino acid sequence of which consists of SEQ ID. NO:7.
- 12. The polypeptide of claim 11, wherein the polypeptide is insulinotropic.
- 13. A method of treating a subject with diabetes, comprising administering to the subject the polypeptide of claim 11 in an amount that has an insulinotropic effect.
- 14. The method of claim 13, wherein the subject has type 2 diabetes.
- 15. A purified polypeptide, wherein the polypeptide comprises the amino acid sequence of GLP-1, a GLP-1 analogue, exendin-4, or an exendin-4 analogue with a spacer between the amino acid residues comparable to residues 7 and 8 or residues 8 and 9 of GLP-1.
- 16. The polypeptide of claim 15, wherein the polypeptide is insulinotropic.
- 17. The polypeptide of claim 15, wherein the spacer is a 6-aminohexanoic acid spacer.
- 18. The polypeptide of claim 17, wherein the 6-aminohexanoic acid spacer comprises less than four 6-aminohexanoic acid residues.
- 19. The polypeptide of claim 15, the amino acid sequence of which comprises SEQ ID NO:8.
- 20. The polypeptide of claim 15, the amino acid sequence of which comprises SEQ ID NO:42.
- 21. The polypeptide of claim 15, the amino acid sequence of which comprises SEQ ID NO:43.
- 22. The polypeptide of claim 15, the amino acid sequence of which comprises SEQ ID NO:44.
- 23. The polypeptide of claim 15, the amino acid sequence of which comprises SEQ ID NO:45.
- 24. The polypeptide of claim 15, the amino acid sequence of which comprises SEQ ID NO:46.
- 25. The polypeptide of claim 15, the amino acid sequence of which comprises SEQ ID NO:47.
- 26. The polypeptide of claim 15, the amino acid sequence of which comprises SEQ ID NO:48.
- 27. The polypeptide of claim 15, wherein the amino acid sequence of the GLP-1, GLP-1 analogue, exendin-4, or exendin-4 analogue comprises a sequence selected from the group consisting of SEQ ID NO:1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 25, 33, 42, 43, 44, 45, 46, 47, and 48.
- 28. A method of treating a subject with diabetes, comprising administering to the subject the polypeptide of claim 15 in an amount that has an insulinotropic effect.
- 29. The method of claim 28, wherein the subject has type 2 diabetes.
- 30. A purified polypeptide, the amino acid sequence of which comprises SEQ ID NO:9.
- 31. The polypeptide of claim 30, wherein the polypeptide is insulinotropic.
- 32. A method of treating a subject with diabetes, comprising administering to the subject the polypeptide of claim 30 in an amount that has an insulinotropic effect.
- 33. The method of claim 32, wherein the subject has type 2 diabetes.
- 34. A purified polypeptide, the amino acid sequence of which consists of SEQ ID NO:9.
- 35. A purified polypeptide, the amino acid sequence of which comprises SEQ ID NO:10.
- 36. The polypeptide of claim 35, wherein the polypeptide is insulinotropic.
- 37. A method of treating a subject with diabetes, comprising administering to the subject the polypeptide of claim 35 in an amount that has an insulinotropic effect.
- 38. The method of claim 37, wherein the subject has type 2 diabetes.
- 39. A purified polypeptide, the amino acid sequence of which consists of SEQ ID NO:10.
- 40. A purified polypeptide, the amino acid sequence of which comprises SEQ ID NO:11.
- 41. The polypeptide of claim 40, wherein the polypeptide is insulinotropic.
- 42. A method of treating a subject with diabetes, comprising administering to the subject the polypeptide of claim 40 in an amount that has an insulinotropic effect.
- 43. The method of claim 42, wherein the subject has type 2 diabetes.
- 44. A purified polypeptide, the amino acid sequence of which consists of SEQ ID NO:11.
- 45. A purified polypeptide, the amino acid sequence of which consists of SEQ ID NO:12.
- 46. The polypeptide of claim 45, wherein the polypeptide is insulinotropic.
- 47. A method of treating a subject with diabetes, comprising administering to the subject the polypeptide of claim 45 in an amount that has an insulinotropic effect.
- 48. The method of claim 47, wherein the subject has type 2 diabetes.
- 49. A purified polypeptide, the amino acid sequence of which consists of SEQ ID NO:13.
- 50. The polypeptide of claim 49, wherein the polypeptide is insulinotropic.
- 51. A method of treating a subject with diabetes, comprising administering to the subject the polypeptide of claim 49 in an amount that has an insulinotropic effect.
- 52. The method of claim 51, wherein the subject has type 2 diabetes.
- 53. A purified polypeptide, the amino acid sequence of which consists of SEQ ID NO:14.
- 54. The polypeptide of claim 53, wherein the polypeptide is insulinotropic.
- 55. A method of treating a subject with diabetes, comprising administering to the subject the polypeptide of claim 53 in an amount that has an insulinotropic effect.
- 56. The method of claim 55, wherein the subject has type 2 diabetes.
- 57. A purified polypeptide, the amino acid sequence of which consists of SEQ ID NO:15.
- 58. The polypeptide of claim 57, wherein the polypeptide is insulinotropic.
- 59. A method of treating a subject with diabetes, comprising administering to the subject the polypeptide of claim 57 in an amount that has an insulinotropic effect.
- 60. The method of claim 59, wherein the subject has type 2 diabetes.
- 61. A purified polypeptide, the amino acid sequence of which comprises SEQ ID NO:25.
- 62. The polypeptide of claim 61, wherein the polypeptide is insulinotropic.
- 63. A method of treating a subject with diabetes, comprising administering to the subject the polypeptide of claim 61 in an amount that has an insulinotropic effect.
- 64. The method of claim 63, wherein the subject has type 2 diabetes.
- 65. A purified polypeptide, the amino acid sequence of which consists of SEQ ID NO:25.
- 66. A purified polypeptide, the amino acid sequence of which comprises SEQ ID NO:33.
- 67. The polypeptide of claim 66, wherein the polypeptide is insulinotropic.
- 68. A method of treating a subject with diabetes, comprising administering to the subject the polypeptide of claim 66 in an amount that has an insulinotropic effect.
- 69. The method of claim 68, wherein the subject has type 2 diabetes.
- 70. A purified polypeptide, the amino acid sequence of which consists of SEQ ID NO:33.
- 71. A method of reducing neuronal death, comprising contacting one or more neurons with a polypeptide comprising GLP-1, exendin-4, or a neuroprotective GLP-1 or exendin-4 analogue.
- 72. The method of claim 71, wherein the contacting step is in vivo.
- 73. The method of claim 71, wherein the contacting step is in vitro.
- 74. The method of claim 71, wherein the neuronal death is caused by a neurodegenerative condition.
- 75. The method of claim 71, wherein the neuronal death is caused by a toxin.
- 76. The method of claim 71, wherein the neuronal death is caused by an injury.
- 77. The method of claim 71, wherein the polypeptide is selected from the group consisting of SEQ ID NO: 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 25, 33, 42, 43, 44, 45, 46, 47, and 48.
- 78. A method of promoting neuronal differentiation or proliferation, comprising contacting one or more neurons or neuronal precursor cells with a polypeptide comprising GLP-1, exendin-4, or a differentiation-inducing or proliferation-inducing GLP-1 or exendin-4 analogue.
- 79. The method of claim 78, wherein the contacting step is in vivo.
- 80. The method of claim 78, wherein the contacting step is in vitro.
- 81. The method of claim 78, wherein the polypeptide is selected from the group consisting of SEQ ID NO:1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 25, 33, 42, 43, 44, 45, 46, 47, and 48.
- 82. A method of reducing formation or accumulation of amyloid protein, comprising contacting one or more neurons with a polypeptide comprising GLP-1, exendin-4, or a GLP-1 or exendin-4 analogue that affects amyloid precursor protein metabolism.
- 83. The method of claim 82, wherein the polypeptide is selected from the group consisting of SEQ ID NO:1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 25, 33, 42, 43, 44, 45, 46, 47, and 48.
- 84. A method of promoting growth of neuronal processes, comprising contacting one or more neurons with a polypeptide comprising GLP-1, exendin-4, or a process-promoting GLP-1 or exendin-4 analogue.
- 85. The method of claim 84, wherein the contacting step is in vivo.
- 86. The method of claim 84, wherein the contacting step is in vitro.
- 87. The method of claim 84, wherein the polypeptide is selected from the group consisting of SEQ ID NO: 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 25, 33, 42, 43, 44, 45, 46, 47, and 48.
- 88. A method of treating a subject with a neurodegenerative condition or of reducing one or more symptoms of a neurodegenerative condition in a subject, comprising administering to the subject a therapeutically effective amount of a polypeptide comprising GLP-1, exendin-4, or a therapeutically effective GLP-1 or exendin-4 analogue.
- 89. The method of claim 88, wherein the neurodegenerative condition is selected from the group consisting of Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, stroke, multiple sclerosis, brain injury, spinal cord injury, and peripheral neuropathy.
- 90. A method of treating a subject with a neurotoxic injury or of reducing one or more symptoms of a neurotoxic injury in a subject, comprising administering to the subject a therapeutically effective amount of a polypeptide comprising GLP-1, exendin-4, or a therapeutically effective GLP-1 or exendin-4 analogue.
