Claims
- 1. A hand-held code reading device having a scanning circuitry for scanning codes, comprising:
- a light source for generating a light beam;
- a receiving element for receiving the light beam, the light beam forming a direct path from the generating element to the receiving element, wherein the light beam is adapted to be blocked off by a first portion of a hand of an operator holding the reading device to prevent the light beam from reaching the receiving element; and
- a manually operated power switch activated by a second portion of the hand holding the reading instrument; and
- a circuitry for initiating a code scanning operation, wherein the initiating circuitry initiates the scanning operation when the first portion of the hand holding the reading device blocks the light beam from reaching the receiving element and the second portion of the hand holding the reading device presses or touches the power switch, and wherein the initiating circuitry disables the scanning operation when the first hand portion is moved away from the light beam or the second hand portion is released from the power switch.
- 2. A hand-held code reading device according to claim 1, further comprising:
- a signaling element for signaling the scanning circuitry to begin the scanning operation when the light beam is obstructed and the power switch is turned on.
- 3. A hand-held code reading device according to claim 1, wherein the light source includes a light emitting diode.
- 4. A hand-held code reading device according to claim 1, wherein the receiving element includes a transistor.
- 5. A hand-held code reading device according to claim 2, wherein the signaling element includes a transistor to signal the scanning circuitry.
- 6. A method of operating a hand-held code reading device comprising the steps of:
- selectively turning on the reading device by touching or pressing a power switch with a first portion a hand holding the reading device;
- generating a light beam along a straight path;
- receiving the generated light beam to disable a code scanning operation;
- selectively obstructing the light beam with a second portion of the hand holding the reading device to enable the scanning operation;
- initiating the scanning operation in response to the first hand portion touching or pressing the power switch and the second hand portion obstructing the light beam; and
- selectively stopping the scanning operation by releasing the first hand portion from the power switch or the second hand portion away from the light beam.
