Claims
- 1. A thermal isolation device comprising:
- first and second thermally conductive members respectively placed in thermal communication with a heat source and an object being isolated from said heat source;
- means for fastening said first and second members together and spacing said members apart wherein means for fastening and spacing thermally isolates said first and second members from each other;
- said first member having a cavity;
- a heat exchange means, contained within said cavity, placed in thermal contact with said first member, but not with said second member;
- means for introducing a cooling fluid into said cavity and circulating said fluid between said heat exchange means;
- means for substantially preventing said fluid from contacting said second member;
- said means for substantially preventing said fluid from contacting said second member being spaced apart from said second member providing a space there between;
- means for removing fluid that has circulated between said heat exchange means to effectively dissipate the heat communicated to the heat exchange means from said heat source;
- said means for fastening and spacing further comprises a plurality of thermally isolating fasteners.
- 2. A thermal isolation device comprising:
- first and second thermally conductive members respectively placed in thermal communication with a heat source and an object being isolated from said heat source;
- means for fastening said first and second members together and spacing said members apart wherein means for fastening and spacing thermally isolates said first and second members from each other;
- said first member having a cavity;
- a heat exchange means, contained within said cavity, placed in thermal contact with said first member, but not with said second member;
- means for introducing a cooling fluid into said cavity and circulating said fluid between said heat exchange means;
- means for substantially preventing said fluid from contacting said second member;
- said means for substantially preventing said fluid from contacting said second member being spaced apart from said second member providing a space there between;
- means for removing fluid that has circulated between said heat exchange means to effectively dissipate the heat communicated to the heat exchange means from said heat source;
- said heat exchange means comprises a plurality of thermally conductive particles.
- 3. Apparatus as set forth in claim 2 wherein said plurality of thermally conductive particles includes stainless steel spheres.
- 4. A thermal isolation device comprising:
- first and second thermally conductive members respectively placed in thermal communication with a heat source and an object being isolated from said heat source;
- means for fastening said first and second members together and spacing said members apart wherein means for fastening and spacing thermally isolates said first and second members from each other;
- said first member having a cavity;
- a heat exchange means, contained within said cavity, placed in thermal contact with said first member, but not with said second member;
- means for introducing a cooling fluid into said cavity and circulating said fluid between said heat exchange means;
- means for substantially preventing said fluid from contacting said second member;
- said means for substantially preventing said fluid from contacting said second member being spaced apart from said second member providing a space there between;
- means for removing fluid that has circulated between said heat exchange means to effectively dissipate the heat communicated to the heat exchange means from said heat source;
- said heat source is a hot air thermode (HAT) device and further wherein said object is a robot am for positioning said HAT device.
- 5. A thermal isolation device for use in combination with a hot air thermode (HAT) and electronic positioning means which is used to position said HAT, comprising:
- first and second thermally conductive members respectively coupled to said HAT and said electronic positioning means;
- means for fastening said first and second members together and spacing said members apart wherein said means for fastening and spacing thermally insulates said first and second members;
- said first member having a cavity;
- a heat exchange means, contained within said cavity, placed in thermal contact with said first member, but not with said second member;
- means for retaining said heat exchange means within said cavity and providing insulation between said heat exchange means and said second member;
- means for introducing a cooling gas into said cavity and circulating said gas between said heat exchange means;
- said retaining means substantially prevents said fluid from contacting said second member; said retaining means being spaced apart from said second member leaving a spaced therebetween; and
- means for removing gas that has circulated between said heat exchange means to effectively dissipate the heat communicated to the heat exchange means from said HAT.
- 6. Apparatus as set forth in claim 5 wherein said cooling gas is air.
- 7. Apparatus as set forth in claim 5 wherein said first and second thermally conductive members are each comprised of a hollow metal disk.
- 8. Apparatus as set forth in claim 5 wherein said means for fastening and spacing further comprises a plurality of thermally isolating fasteners.
- 9. Apparatus as set forth in claim 5 wherein said heat exchange means comprises a plurality of thermally conductive particles.
- 10. Apparatus as set forth in claim 9 wherein said plurality of thermally conductive particles include stainless steel spheres.
- 11. Apparatus as set forth in claim 5 wherein said heat exchange means comprises a plurality of thermally conductive fins.
- 12. Apparatus as set forth in claim 5 wherein said heat exchange means comprises a plurality of thermally conductive pins.
- 13. Apparatus as set forth in claim 5 wherein said heat exchange means comprises intermeshing wires.
- 14. Apparatus as set forth in claim 5 wherein said heat exchange means comprises steel wool.
- 15. Apparatus as set forth in claim 5 wherein said means for introducing and circulating said gas further comprises a gas dispenser.
- 16. Apparatus as set forth in claim 15 wherein said means for removing gas is at least one vent fabricated as part of said first member.
- 17. A method for providing thermal isolation between an object and a heat source, comprising the steps of:
- placing first and second thermally conductive members in thermal communication with a heat source and an object being isolated from said heat source;
- fastening said first and second members together utilizing thermally insulating means;
- said first member having a cavity;
- locating a heat exchange means within said cavity in thermal contact with said first member, but not with said second member;
- introducing a cooling fluid into said cavity and circulating said fluid between said heat exchange means;
- substantially preventing said fluid from contacting said second member;
- removing fluid that has circulated between said heat exchange means to effectively dissipate the heat communicated to the heat exchange means for said heat source; and
- said heat exchange means comprises a plurality of thermally conductive particles.
- 18. A method as set forth in claim 17 wherein said plurality of thermally conductive particles includes stainless steel spheres.
