- 2. The improvement of claim 1 further comprising the step of communicating a synchronization signal to said plurality of remote station units from a control unit as a single timing signal against which said time frames of each of said remote station units are synchronized by said frame sync.
- 3. The improvement of claim 1 further comprising the step of performing an echo back communication protocol for each of said remote station units within its corresponding said dedicated time slot in consecutive frames, said echo back communication protocol being determined by detected communication errors and selectively correcting said communication errors.
- 4. The improvement of claim 1 where in said step of bidirectionally serially communicating said control signaling data is correlated with a specified register within each of said plurality of remote station units receiving/transmitting said communication so that bidirectional serial communication is easily implemented in hardware.
- 5. The improvement of claim 1 where in said step of bidirectionally serially communicating each of said time slots is comprised of three byte cycles, two of said cycles being dedicated to said serial data and the third of said cycles being dedicated to said control signaling data.
- 6. The improvement of claim 1 where in said step of bidirectionally serially communicating, each one of said plurality of time slots is divided into a sequence of dedicated byte cycles, at least one but not all of said cycles being dedicated to distinguishable groups of control signaling data relating to communication of a control unit with each of said plurality of remote station units.
- 7. The improvement of claim 6 where in said step of bidirectionally serially communicating said control signaling data is directed to separate registers within each of said plurality of remote station units.
- 8. A circuit for communicating over a single two-wire cable with a plurality of remote station units comprising:
- means for bidirectionally serially communicating with said plurality of remote station units in a sequence of time frames, each said time frame divided into a plurality of time slots corresponding to said plurality of remote station units, each of said plurality of time slots being dedicated for communication of said control signaling data to a specified one of said plurality of remote station units, said means for bidirectionally communicating comprising:
- means for serially communicating serial digital data only by means of communication in at least one fixed portion of one of said plurality of said time slots, and
- means for serially communicating control signaling data only by means of communication in at least another fixed portion of said one of said plurality said time slots without handshake protocol,
- each of said time frames having a frame sync included therein to which said remote station units synchronize communication on said two-wire cable.
- 9. The circuit of claim 8 wherein said means for bidirectionally serially communicating comprises a control unit and means for communicating a synchronization signal to said remote station units from said control unit as a single timing signal against which timing signal said time frames of each of said remote station units are synchronized by means of said frame sync.
- 10. The circuit of claim 8 wherein said means for bidirectionally serially communicating communicates according to an echo back communication protocol with each of said remote station units within its corresponding dedicated time slots in consecutive frames, said echo back communication protocol being determined by detected communication errors and selectively correcting said communication errors.
- 11. The circuit of claim 8 wherein said means for bidirectionally serially communicating comprises a control unit, and at least one of said plurality of remote station units having a plurality of registers, and wherein said control signaling data is correlated by said bidirectional communication means with a specified one of said registers within one of said plurality of remote station units receiving said communication so that bidirectional serial communication is easily implemented in hardware.
- 12. The circuit of claim 8 wherein said means for bidirectionally serially communicating functions so that each of said time slots is comprised of three byte cycles, two of said cycles being dedicated to said serial data and the third of said cycles being dedicated to said control signaling data.
- 13. The circuit of claim 8 wherein said means for bidirectionally serially communicating comprises a control unit, and wherein said means for bidirectionally serially communicating functions so that each of said time slots is divided into a sequence of dedicated byte cycles, each of said cycles being dedicated to control signalling data and serial data relating at least to communication between said control unit with selected ones of said plurality of remote station units.
- 14. The circuit of claim 13 wherein said distinguishable groups of data relating to communication between said control unit with each of said plurality of remote station units comprise control signaling data and said serial data, said control signaling data being directed to separate registers within each of said plurality of remote station units.
