Claims
- 1. A hydrogen transportation/distribution infrastructure system including:
a hydrogen purification/compression subsystem which purifies and compresses hydrogen; and a hydrogen distribution subsystem which distributes hydrogen to end users; wherein one or both of said subsystems includes a combined bulk hydrogen storage/single stage metal hydride hydrogen compressor comprising:
a) a pressure containment vessel, said pressure containment vessel having at least one hydrogen inlet/outlet port for transferring hydrogen into and out of said vessel; b) a hydrogen storage alloy disposed with said containment vessel, said hydrogen storage alloy being in sufficient quantity to provide for bulk storage of hydrogen and said hydrogen storage alloy having a plateau pressure of less than or equal to 500 psi at a temperature of less than or equal to 25° C. and a plateau pressure greater than or equal to 1500 psi at a temperature of less than or equal to 200° C.; and c) a thermal management system for alternately heating and cooling said hydrogen storage alloy.
- 2. The hydrogen infrastructure system of claim 1, wherein said hydrogen storage alloy wherein said hydrogen storage alloy has a plateau pressure less than or equal to 400 psi at a temperature of less than or equal to 25° C. and a plateau pressure greater than or equal to 2000 psi at a temperature of less than or equal to 200° C.
- 3. The hydrogen infrastructure system of claim 1, wherein said hydrogen storage alloy has a plateau pressure less than or equal to 300 psi at a temperature of less than or equal to 25° C. and a plateau pressure greater than or equal to 3600 psi at a temperature of less than or equal to 200° C.
- 4. The hydrogen infrastructure system of claim 1, wherein said hydrogen storage alloy has a plateau pressure less than or equal to 200 psi at a temperature of less than or equal to 25° C. and a plateau pressure greater than or equal to 5000 psi at a temperature of less than or equal to 200° C.
- 5. The hydrogen infrastructure system of claim 1, wherein said hydrogen storage alloy has a plateau pressure of about 100 psi at a temperature of about 12° C. and a plateau pressure of about 6000 psi at a temperature of about 180° C.
- 6. The hydrogen infrastructure system of claim 1, wherein said hydrogen storage alloy comprises an alloy is an AB2 alloy.
- 7. The hydrogen infrastructure system of claim 6, wherein said hydrogen storage alloy comprises an alloy is a modified Ti-Mn2 alloy.
- 8. The hydrogen infrastructure system of claim 7, wherein said hydrogen storage alloy comprises, in atomic percent 2-5% Zr, 26-32% Ti, 7-10% V, 8-20% Cr, 38-42% Mn; and at least one element selected from the group consisting of 1-6% Ni, 2-6% Fe and 0.1-2% Al.
- 9. The hydrogen infrastructure system of claim 8, wherein said hydrogen storage alloy further comprises up to 1 atomic percent Misch metal.
- 10. The hydrogen infrastructure system of claim 9, wherein said hydrogen storage alloy comprises, in atomic percent 3.63% Zr, 29.8% Ti, 8.82% V, 9.85% Cr, 39.5% Mn,2.0% Ni, 5.0% Fe, 1.0% Al, and 0.4% Misch metal.
- 11. The hydrogen infrastructure system of claim 8, wherein said hydrogen storage alloy comprises, in atomic percent 3.6% Zr, 29.0% Ti, 8.9% V, 10.1% Cr, 40.1% Mn,2.0% Ni, 5.1% Fe, and 1.2% Al.
- 12. The hydrogen infrastructure system of claim 8, wherein said hydrogen storage alloy comprises, in atomic percent 3.6% Zr, 28.3% Ti, 8.8% V, 10.0% Cr, 40.7% Mn,1.9% Ni, 5.1% Fe, and 1.6% Al.
- 13. The hydrogen infrastructure system of claim 8, wherein said hydrogen storage alloy comprises, in atomic percent 4% Zr, 29.5% Ti, 8.5% V, 15.0% Cr, 38% Mn,5% Ni.
- 14. The hydrogen infrastructure system of claim 1, further including:
a) a power generation subsystem; b) a hydrogen generation subsystem which uses power from said power generation subsystem to produce hydrogen; c) a hydrogen storage subsystem which stores purified and compressed hydrogen from said a hydrogen purification/compression subsystem in metal hydride storage tanks; d) a hydrogen transportation subsystem which transports the stored hydrogen in metal hydride storage tanks; and e) an end-use subsystem which receives distributed hydrogen from said hydrogen distribution subsystem and consumes said hydrogen.
- 15. The hydrogen infrastructure system of claim 14, wherein where, the metal hydride storage tanks include a magnesium based hydrogen storage alloy powder, said alloy comprising at least 90 weight % magnesium, said alloy powder having:
i) a hydrogen storage capacity of at least 6 weight %; ii) absorption kinetics such that the alloy powder absorbs 80% of it's total capacity within 5 minutes at 300° C.; and iii) a particle size range of less than about 70 microns.
- 16. The hydrogen infrastructure system of claim 15, wherein said alloy powder has a hydrogen storage capacity of at least 6.5 weight %.
- 17. The hydrogen infrastructure system of claim 16, wherein said alloy powder has absorption kinetics such that the alloy powder absorbs 80% of it's total capacity within 2 minutes at 300° C.
- 18. The hydrogen infrastructure system of claim 15, wherein said alloy powder has a hydrogen storage capacity of at least 6.9 weight %.
- 19. The hydrogen infrastructure system of claim 18, wherein said alloy powder has absorption kinetics such that the alloy powder absorbs 80% of it's total capacity within 1.5 minutes at 300° C.
- 20. The hydrogen infrastructure system of claim 15, wherein said alloy further includes 0.5-2.5 weight % nickel.
- 21. The hydrogen infrastructure system of claim 20, wherein said alloy further includes 1.0-4.0 weight % Misch metal.
- 22. The hydrogen infrastructure system of claim 21, wherein said Misch metal comprises predominantly Ce, La, Pr, and Nd.
- 23. The hydrogen infrastructure system of claim 22, wherein said alloy further includes one or more from the group consisting of 3-7 weight % Al, 0.1-1.5 weight % Y and 0.3-1.5 weight % silicon, and may optionally further include up to 1% carbon and/or boron.
- 24. The hydrogen infrastructure system of claim 15, wherein said alloy comprises 91.0 wt. % Mg, 0.9 wt. % Ni, 5.6 wt. % Al, 0.5 wt. % Y and 2.0 at % Misch metal.
- 25. The hydrogen infrastructure system of claim 15, wherein said alloy comprises 95.6 wt. % Mg, 1.6 wt. % Ni, 0.8 wt. % Si and 2.0 wt. % Misch metal.
- 26. The hydrogen infrastructure system of claim 15, wherein said alloy comprises 95 wt. % Mg, 2 wt. % Ni and 3.0 wt. % Misch metal.
- 27. The hydrogen infrastructure system of claim 14, wherein said hydrogen distribution subsystem includes at least one selected from the group consisting of vehicle refueling stations, home use distribution facilities, and industry/business use distribution facilities.
- 28. The hydrogen infrastructure system of claim 27, wherein said hydrogen distribution subsystem includes vehicle refueling stations.
- 29. The hydrogen infrastructure system of claim 14, wherein said hydrogen end-use subsystem includes at least one selected from the group consisting of vehicles homes industries and businesses.
- 30. The hydrogen infrastructure system of claim 29, wherein said hydrogen end-use subsystem includes vehicles.
- 31. The hydrogen infrastructure system of claim 30, wherein said vehicles include fuel cell powered vehicles.
- 32. The hydrogen infrastructure system of claim 30, wherein said vehicles include internal combustion powered vehicles.
- 33. A combined bulk hydrogen storage/single stage metal hydride hydrogen compressor comprising:
a) a pressure containment vessel, said pressure containment vessel having at least one hydrogen inlet/outlet port for transferring hydrogen into and out of said vessel; b) a hydrogen storage alloy disposed with said containment vessel, said hydrogen storage alloy being in sufficient quantity to provide for bulk storage of hydrogen and said hydrogen storage alloy having a plateau pressure of less than or equal to 500 psi at a temperature of less than or equal to 25° C. and a plateau pressure greater than or equal to 1500 psi at a temperature of less than or equal to 200° C.; and c) a thermal management system for alternately heating and cooling said hydrogen storage alloy.
- 34. The combined bulk hydrogen storage/single stage metal hydride hydrogen compressor of claim 33, wherein said hydrogen storage alloy has a plateau pressure less than or equal to 400 psi at a temperature of less than or equal to 25° C. and a plateau pressure greater than or equal to 2000 psi at a temperature of less than or equal to 200° C.
- 35. The combined bulk hydrogen storage/single stage metal hydride hydrogen compressor of claim 33, wherein said hydrogen storage alloy has a plateau pressure less than or equal to 300 psi at a temperature of less than or equal to 25° C. and a plateau pressure greater than or equal to 3600 psi at a temperature of less than or equal to 200° C.
- 36. The combined bulk hydrogen storage/single stage metal hydride hydrogen compressor of claim 33, wherein said hydrogen storage alloy has a plateau pressure less than or equal to 200 psi at a temperature of less than or equal to 25° C. and a plateau pressure greater than or equal to 5000 psi at a temperature of less than or equal to 200° C.
- 37. The combined bulk hydrogen storage/single stage metal hydride hydrogen compressor of claim 33, wherein said hydrogen storage alloy has a plateau pressure of about 100 psi at a temperature of about 12° C. and a plateau pressure of about 6000 psi at a temperature of about 180° C.
- 38. The single stage metal hydride hydrogen compressor of claim 33, wherein said hydrogen storage alloy comprises an alloy is an AB2 alloy.
- 39. The single stage metal hydride hydrogen compressor of claim 38, wherein said hydrogen storage alloy comprises an alloy is a modified Ti-Mn2 alloy.
- 40. The single stage metal hydride hydrogen compressor of claim 39, wherein said hydrogen storage alloy comprises, in atomic percent 2-5% Zr, 26-32% Ti, 7-10% V, 8-20% Cr, 38-42% Mn; and at least one element selected from the group consisting of 1-6% Ni, 2-6% Fe and 0.1-2% Al.
- 41. The single stage metal hydride hydrogen compressor of claim 40, wherein said hydrogen storage alloy further comprises up to 1 atomic percent Misch metal.
- 42. The single stage metal hydride hydrogen compressor of claim 41, wherein said hydrogen storage alloy comprises, in atomic percent 3.63% Zr, 29.8% Ti, 8.82% V, 9.85% Cr, 39.5% Mn,2.0% Ni, 5.0% Fe, 1.0% Al, and 0.4% Misch metal.
- 43. The single stage metal hydride hydrogen compressor of claim 40, wherein said hydrogen storage alloy comprises, in atomic percent 3.6% Zr, 29.0% Ti, 8.9% V, 10.1% Cr, 40.1% Mn, 2.0% Ni, 5.1% Fe, and 1.2% Al.
- 44. The single stage metal hydride hydrogen compressor of claim 40, wherein said hydrogen storage alloy comprises, in atomic percent 3.6% Zr, 28.3% Ti, 8.8% V, 10.0% Cr, 40.7% Mn, 1.9% Ni, 5.1% Fe, and 1.6% Al.
- 45. The single stage metal hydride hydrogen compressor of claim 40, wherein said hydrogen storage alloy comprises, in atomic percent 4% Zr, 29.5% Ti, 8.5% V, 15.0% Cr, 38% Mn, 5% Ni.
- 46. A bulk hydrogen storage alloy having a plateau pressure of less than or equal to 500 psi at a temperature of less than or equal to 25° C. and a plateau pressure greater than or equal to 1500 psi at a temperature of less than or equal to 200° C.
- 47. The bulk hydrogen storage alloy of claim 46, wherein said hydrogen storage alloy has a plateau pressure less than or equal to 400 psi at a temperature of less than or equal to 25° C. and a plateau pressure greater than or equal to 2000 psi at a temperature of less than or equal to 200° C.
- 48. The bulk hydrogen storage alloy of claim 46, wherein said hydrogen storage alloy has a plateau pressure less than or equal to 300 psi at a temperature of less than or equal to 25° C. and a plateau pressure greater than or equal to 3600 psi at a temperature of less than or equal to 200°C.
- 49. The bulk hydrogen storage alloy of claim 46, wherein said hydrogen storage alloy has a plateau pressure less than or equal to 200 psi at a temperature of less than or equal to 25° C. and a plateau pressure greater than or equal to 5000 psi at a temperature of less than or equal to 200° C.
- 50. The bulk hydrogen storage alloy of claim 46, wherein said hydrogen storage alloy has a plateau pressure of about 100 psi at a temperature of about 12° C. and a plateau pressure of about 6000 psi at a temperature of about 180° C.
- 51. The bulk hydrogen storage alloy of claim 46, wherein said hydrogen storage alloy comprises an alloy is an AB2 alloy.
- 52. The bulk hydrogen storage alloy of claim 51, wherein said hydrogen storage alloy comprises an alloy is a modified Ti-Mn2 alloy.
- 53. The bulk hydrogen storage alloy of claim 52, wherein said hydrogen storage alloy comprises, in atomic percent 2-5% Zr, 26-32% Ti, 7-10% V, 8-20% Cr, 38-42% Mn; and at least one element selected from the group consisting of 1-6% Ni, 2-6% Fe and 0.1-2% Al.
- 54. The bulk hydrogen storage alloy of claim 53, wherein said hydrogen storage alloy further comprises up to 1 atomic percent Misch metal.
- 55. The bulk hydrogen storage alloy of claim 54, wherein said hydrogen storage alloy comprises, in atomic percent 3.63% Zr, 29.8% Ti, 8.82% V, 9.85% Cr, 39.5% Mn,2.0% Ni, 5.0% Fe, 1.0% Al, and 0.4% Misch metal.
- 56. The bulk hydrogen storage alloy of claim 53, wherein said hydrogen storage alloy comprises, in atomic percent 3.6% Zr, 29.0% Ti, 8.9% V, 10.1% Cr, 40.1% Mn, 2.0% Ni, 5.1% Fe, and 1.2% Al.
- 57. The bulk hydrogen storage alloy of claim 53, wherein said hydrogen storage alloy comprises, in atomic percent 3.6% Zr, 28.3% Ti, 8.8% V, 10.0% Cr, 40.7% Mn,1.9% Ni, 5.1% Fe, and 1.6% Al.
- 58. The bulk hydrogen storage alloy of claim 53, wherein said hydrogen storage alloy comprises, in atomic percent 4% Zr, 29.5% Ti, 8.5% V, 15.0% Cr, 38% Mn, 5% Ni.
