Claims
- 1. A composition of matter comprising:a solid rhenium-containing multimetallic catalyst; water; hydrogen; a 5 carbon sugar or a 5 carbon sugar alcohol; and at least one member selected from the group consisting of propylene glycol, ethylene glycol, glycerol, and lactate.
- 2. The composition of claim 1 wherein the sold catalyst comprises nickel and a carbon support.
- 3. The composition of claim 2, wherein the water has a basic pH.
- 4. The composition of claim 2 wherein the catalyst contains 0.1 to 5 weight % rhenium and 1 to 10 weight % nickel.
- 5. The composition of claim 1 comprising 20 to 50 weight % of said 5-carbon sugar or sugar alcohol; and wherein the catalyst comprises nickel.
- 6. The composition of claim 1 wherein the multimetallic catalyst comprises nickel, the nickel being present at a ratio of greater than or equal to about 5:1 relative to the rhenium.
- 7. The composition of claim 1 wherein the 5 carbon sugar or a 5 carbon sugar alcohol is selected from the group consisting of arabinitol, xylitol, ribose, arabinose, xylose, and lyxose.
- 8. A composition comprising:at least one monomeric sugar or sugar alcohol; propylene glycol; ethylene glycol; water; and a catalyst comprising a carbon support, rhenium and at least one additional metal, the rhenium being present in the catalyst from 0.5% to 5%, by weight.
- 9. The composition of claim 8 further comprising added hydrogen.
- 10. The composition of claim 8 wherein the at least one additional metal is selected from the group consisting of Ni, Pd, Ru, Co, Ag, Au, Rh, Pt, Ir, Os, and Cu.
- 11. The composition of claim 8 wherein the at least one monomeric sugar or sugar alcohol is selected from the group consisting of ribose, glucose, sorbitol, xylitol, arabinitol, erythritol, galactose, talose, maltose, sucrose, altrose, mannose, gulose, idose, and lyxose.
