Claims
- 1. A retractable needle assembly for use in medical procedures, comprising:
a needle assembly, said needle assembly comprising a hub having an anterior end and a posterior end, a hollow needle attached to the posterior end of the hub; a tubular sheath having a longitudinal slot along a portion of its length, an anterior end, and a posterior end, said posterior end having an opening therethrough, wherein the needle assembly is positioned within the tubular sheath with the hollow needle projecting from the posterior end of the hub through the posterior end of said sheath; a cap attached to the anterior end of said sheath, said cap being open at its anterior end to allow access to the interior of said sheath; a post, attached to said hub and projecting through said longitudinal slot; a cross piece attached to the top of said post for moving the needle assembly along said longitudinal slot; wherein said needle assembly may be moved reversibly along said longitudinal slot of said sheath between an exposed position in which the hollow needle passes through the opening in the posterior end of the sheath and a retracted position in which the hollow needle is contained within the tubular sheath, wherein the opening in the posterior end of the sheath is large enough to allow the hollow needle to pass therethrough, but too small to allow the hub to pass therethrough; a means for reversibly locking the needle assembly in its exposed position; a means for reversibly locking the needle assembly in its retracted position; means for permanently locking the needle assembly in its retracted position, said permanent locking means comprising a radial opening in said cross member, a pin projecting from the outer surface of the anterior end of said cap and projecting radially from the anterior outer surface thereof whereby the radial opening in said cross member engages the radial pin of said sheath in irreversible connection when the post is moved to the far anterior end of said longitudinal slot; a cover attached to said cap and covering said radial pin, said cover being open at its posterior end to allow said post and cross member to enter the interior of said cover to engage said permanent locking means thereby preventing access to said permanent locking means.
- 2. The retractable needle assembly according to claim 1 wherein said pin has a tapered upper surface sloping from its anterior end to its posterior end.
- 3. The retractable needle assembly according to claim 1 wherein the radial opening in said cross member is a blind opening being closed on its top surface.
- 4. The retractable needle assembly according to claim 3 wherein said opening is a blind hemispherical opening and said pin has a hemispherical upper surface sized to fit into said blind opening.
- 5. The retractable needle assembly according to claim 1 wherein a slot is provided in the posterior end of said cap to accept said post when said cross piece is at the extreme posterior end of said longitudinal slot.
- 6. The retractable needle assembly according to claim 1 wherein the means for permanently locking the needle assembly in its retracted position comprises:
a hook shaped member attached to said crosspiece, said hook shaped member having its leading edge formed downwardly at approximately 90 degrees; a resilient ramp attached to the outer surface of said cap, the posterior of said resilient ramp being fastened to the external surface of said cap and its anterior end being raised from the surface of said cap whereby when said post is positioned at the anterior end of the longitudinal slot, said hook member passes over and depresses the anterior end of said ramp and drops down in a locking position over the end of said ramp when said ramp resumes its original position thus permanently locking said needle assembly in its retracted position.
- 7. The retractable needle assembly according to claim 6 wherein said ramp is in a nearly level position and said cap is provided with a cavity under said ramp whereby said cross piece passes over and depresses said ramp into said cavity, said ramp returning to its original position when said hook passes the anterior end of said ramp.
- 8. The retractable needle assembly according to claim 1 in which the means for reversibly locking the needle assembly comprises a first locking slot at the posterior end of the longitudinal slot and extending at approximately 90 degrees in a circumferential direction from said longitudinal slot and a short longitudinal slot extending toward the anterior end of said sheath, said short longitudinal slot forming an L shaped slot whereby the post is reversibly locked in the shorter longitudinal portion of said cross slot when the needle is in the exposed position and a second locking slot at the anterior end of said longitudinal slot, said second locking slot extending is a circumferential direction and having protruding teeth in the interior thereof and a lateral opening in the side wall of said cover adjacent said second locking slot whereby said post may be rotated into said second locking slot, engaging said teeth in said slot whereby said post is reversibly locked in said second slot when said needle assembly is in the retracted position.
- 9. The retractable needle assembly according to claim 6 in which the means for reversibly locking the needle assembly comprises a first locking slot at the posterior end of said longitudinal slot and extending at approximately 90 degrees in a circumferential direction and having a shorter longitudinal portion extending toward the anterior end of said sheath, said short longitudinal slot forming an L shaped slot; a spring inside said sheath attached to said needle assembly and the posterior end of said sheath, said spring being compressed when said needle is moved to the exposed position and urges said post into said L shaped slot end when said cross piece is released whereby the post is reversibly locked in the L shaped slot when said needle is in the exposed position and a second locking slot at the anterior end of said longitudinal slot extending in a circumferential direction and having protruding teeth in the interior thereof whereby said post is reversibly locked in said second slot by said teeth when said needle is in the retracted position; and a lateral opening is one side wall of said cover adjacent said whereby said post may be rotated through said lateral opening in said cover to allow said post to be inserted in said second locking slot and held in a reversible locking position by the teeth in said slot.
- 10. The retractable needle assembly according to claim 1 wherein the means for reversibly locking the needle assembly comprises a first locking slot at the posterior end of said longitudinal slot and extending at approximately 90 degrees in a circumferential direction and terminating in a circular opening having an inside diameter of a size to form a tight fit wit h the outside diameter of said post when said post is inserted in said locking slot and a second locking slot at the anterior end of said longitudinal slot and extending approximately 90 degrees in a circumferential direction and having protruding teeth in the interior thereof and a lateral slot in one side wall of said cover adjacent said second locking slot whereby said needle assembly is reversibly locked in the retracted position by said teeth when said cross piece and said post are rotated through said lateral opening and said post is engaged by said teeth in said second locking slot.
- 11. The retractable needle assembly according to claim 6 wherein the means for reversibly locking the needle assembly comprises a first locking slot at the posterior end of said longitudinal slot and extending at approximately 90 degrees in a circumferential direction and terminating in a circular opening having an inside diameter of a size to form a tight fit with the outside diameter of said post when said post is inserted in said locking slot and a second locking slot at the anterior end of said longitudinal slot and extending approximately 90 degrees in a circumferential direction and and having protruding teeth in the interior thereof, and a lateral slot in one side wall of said cover adjacent said second locking slot whereby said needle is reversibly locked the retracted position in said second slot by said teeth when said post and cross piece are rotated through said lateral slot and said post is engaged by said teeth.
- 12) A retractable needle assembly for use in medical procedures comprising;
a tubular sheath having a posterior end and an anterior end and having a longitudinal slot extending along a portion of the length thereof; a cap attached at the anterior end of said sheath, said cap being open at its anterior end; a needle assembly positioned inside said sheath, said needle assembly comprising a body having an anterior end and a posterior end, and a hollow needle passing through the body and projecting from the from the posterior end thereof in an exposed position; a post attached to said body and extending out through said longitudinal slot; a cross piece attached to the outer end of said post for moving said post and needle assembly along the longitudinal slot, said cross piece having a radial opening therethrough;
a removeable protective cover covering the end of said needle; a tubular member attached to the anterior end of said needle assembly and extending outwardly from the anterior end of said sheath; a connector attached to the distal end of said tubular member; reversible locking means for reversibly locking said needle in the extended position; permanent locking means at the anterior end of said longitudinal slot for permanently locking said needle assembly in the retracted position, said means for permanently locking said needle in the retracted position comprises a pin attached to said cap and extending radially from the exterior surface thereof, whereby the radial opening in said cross piece engages said radial pin when the post is moved to the extreme anterior end of said slot thereby permanently locking said needle assembly in the retracted position and; a cover attached to said cap and covering said permanent locking means, said cover being open on its posterior end to allow said cross piece to engage the permanent locking means while preventing assess to said permanent locking means.
- 13. The retractable needle assembly according to claim 12 wherein said pin has a tapered outer surface tapering from said anterior end to said posterior end.
- 14. The retractable needle assembly according to claim 12 wherein said cross piece is tapered from the posterior end to the anterior end.
- 15. The retractable needle assembly according to claim 12 wherein the radial opening in said cross piece is a blind opening being closed on its top surface.
- 16 The retractable needle assembly according to claim 15 wherein the radial opening in said cross piece is a blind opening of a hemispherical shape and closed on its top surface and said pin has a hemispherical shaped upper surface sizes to fit into said hemispherical opening in said cross piece.
- 17. The retractable needle assembly according to claim 12 wherein the means for permanently locking the needle assembly in the retracted position comprises;
a hook shaped member attached to said cross piece, said hook shaped member having its leading edge formed downwardly at approximately 90 degrees; a resilient ramp attached to the anterior outer surface of said cap, the posterior end of said resilient ramp being fastened to the cap at its anterior end and the anterior end of said ramp being raised from the exterior surface of said cap whereby when said cross piece is positioned at the anterior end of said longitudinal slot, said hook shaped member passes over and depresses the anterior end of said ramp and drops down in a locking position with respect to said ramp when said ramp resumes its original position.
- 18. The retractable needle assembly according to claim 17 wherein said ramp is in a nearly level position and said cap is provided with a cavity under said ramp whereby said cross piece passes over and depresses said ramp into said cavity, said ramp returning to its original position when said hook passes the anterior end of said ramp.
- 19. The retractable needle assembly according to claim 12 wherein the means for releasibly locking said needle in the extended position comprises a locking slot at the posterior end of said longitudinal slot and extending at approximately 90 degrees in a circumferential direction and having a shorter longuitudinal portion extending toward the anterior end of said sheath forming an L shaped slot, the needle assembly is locked in position by rotating said post attached to said needle assembly into said locking slot and along the shorter longitudinal slot.
- 20. The retractable needle assembly according to claim 12 wherein the terminus of said locking slot is a circular opening at the end of the circumferential portion of said locking slot, the inside diameter of said circular opening being sized to form a tight fit with the outside diameter of said post when said post is inserted in said circular opening.
- 21. A retractable needle assembly for inserting a catheter in a blood vessel in a medical procedures comprising:
a tubular sheath having a longitudinal slot along a portion of its length, an anterior end and a posterior end, said posterior end having an opening therethrough, a cap attached to the anterior end of said sheath, said cap being closed at its anterior end; a needle assembly positioned in said tubular sheath comprising a container and a needle attached to the posterior end of said container; said needle being positioned through the opening in the posterior end of said sheath in an extended position; a catheter hub removeably attached to the posterior end of said sheath and having a catheter attached thereto and surrounding the portion of said needle expending from the posterior end of said sheath; a post attached to said needle assembly and projecting through said longitudinal slot exterior to the outer surface of said sheath, a cross piece attached to the distal end of said post wherein the needle assembly may be moved along said longitudinal slot of said sheath from the posterior end to the anterior end; a butterfly wing-like gripping means attached to said cross piece for moving said cross piece along said longitudinal slot;
releasable locking means for locking said needle assembly in the extended position; and means for permanently locking said needle assembly in the retracted position comprising a radial opening in said cross piece, a pin projecting from the outer surface of the anterior end of said cap and projecting radially from the outer surface of said cap at its anterior end whereby the radial opening in said cross piece engages the radial pin of said sheath in an irreversible position when the post is moved to the far anterior end of said longitudinal slot and a cover attached to the upper surface of said cap and extending over said pin, whereby said cover prevents access to said permanent locking means when said permanent locking means is engaged.
- 22. The retractable needle assembly according to claim 21 wherein said pin has tapered upper surface sloping from its anterior end to its posterior end.
- 23. The retractable needle assembly according to claim 20 wherein the radial opening in said cross member is a blind hole being closed on its top surface.
- 24. The retractable needle assembly according to claim 23 wherein said opening is a blind hemispherical opening and said pin has a hemispherical upper surface sized to fit into said blind hemispherical opening.
- 25. The retractable needle assembly according to claim 20 wherein the means for permanently locking said needle assembly in the retracted position comprises:
a hook shaped member at the end of said cross piece, said hook shaped member having its leading edge formed downwardly at approximately 90 degrees; and a resilient ramp member attached to the outer surface of said cap at its anterior end the posterior end of said ramp member being fastened to the surface of said cap and its anterior end being raised from the surface of said cap whereby when said cross piece is positioned at the anterior end of said longitudinal slot, said hook shaped member passes over and depresses the anterior end of said ramp and drops down in a locking position over the anterior end of said ramp when said ramp resumes its original raised position.
- 26. The retractable needle assembly according to claim 25 wherein said ramp is in a nearly level position and said cap is provided with a cavity under said ramp whereby said cross piece passes over and depresses said ramp into said cavity, said ramp returning to its original position when said hook passes over the anterior end of said ramp and locking under the hook of said cross piece.
- 27. The retractable needle assembly according to claim 21 whereby the reversible locking means comprises a locking slot at the posterior end of said longitudinal slot, said locking slot extending circumferentially along the surface of said sheath and terminating in a circular opening, the inside diameter of said circular opening being sized to form a tight fit with the outside diameter of said post when said post is rotated into said locking slot from said longitudinal slot.
- 28. The retractable needle assembly according to claim 25 whereby the reversible locking means comprises a locking slot at the posterior end of said longitudinal slot, said locking slot extending circumferentially along the surface of said sheath and terminating in a circular opening, the inside diameter of said circular opening being sized to form a tight fit with the outside diameter of said post when said post is rotated into said locking slot from said longitudinal slot.
- 29. The retractable needle assembly according to claim 21 wherein said reversible locking means comprises providing a tapered portion in said longitudinal slot at its posterior end to reduce the width of the slot at the posterior end to a width slightly smaller than the outside diameter of said post whereby said post is wedged in said longitudinal slot when it reaches the posterior end of said longitudinal slot.
- 30. The retractable needle assembly according to claim 1 wherein said cap is replaced by a collar, said collar covering a portion of the interior and exterior surfaces of said sheath and the anterior end surface thereof said pin being attached to the exterior end of said collar and said cover being attached to said collar said collar terminating inside said sheath in a frustro-conical shape to accept a syringe tip therein.
- 31. The retractable needle assembly according to claim 5 wherein said cap is replaced by a collar, said collar covering a portion of the interior and exterior surfaces of said sheath and the anterior end surface thereof, said ramp being attached to the exterior surface of said collar.
- 32. The retractable needle assembly according to claim 28 wherein said sheath is tapered to a smaller diameter at its posterior end.
