- 41. An image display apparatus displaying an input video signal on a passive light modulation part including a light source, the apparatus comprising:
an input signal processing part amplifying said input video signal so as to increase a difference between a maximum brightness level and a minimum brightness level, wherein a video signal outputted from said input signal processing part is inputted to said passive light modulation part, and a brightness of said light source is adjusted so as to reduce an amount of variation in a visual average brightness level of said input video signal caused by the function of said input signal processing part.
- 42. The image display apparatus according to claim 41, further comprising:
a control data generation part providing control data for determining the brightness of said light source, wherein said control data generation part generates control data for reducing said amount of variation.
- 43. The image display apparatus according to claim 41, wherein the brightness of said light source is adjusted at least frame by frame.
- 44. The image display apparatus according to claim 41, further comprising:
a characteristics detection part detecting a maximum brightness level, a minimum brightness level, and an average brightness level of said input video signal; and a control data generation part calculating a gain for signal amplitude adjustment and a shift amount of a DC level, said gain for signal amplitude adjustment being for increasing a difference between said maximum brightness level and said minimum brightness level to a dynamic range with reference to said average brightness level, and said shift amount of a DC level being for allowing said input video signal to fall within said dynamic range, wherein said input signal processing part adjusts the amplitude and DC level of said input video signal in accordance with said gain for signal amplitude adjustment and said shift amount of a DC level.
- 45. An image display apparatus displaying an input video signal on a passive light modulation part including a light source, the apparatus comprising:
an input signal processing part amplifying said input video signal so as to increase a difference between a maximum brightness level and a minimum brightness level, wherein a brightness of said light source is adjusted so as to reduce a difference between a visual average brightness level of a video signal outputted from said input signal processing part and inputted and displayed on said passive light modulation part and a visual average brightness level of the input video signal, which has not been processed by said input signal processing part, displayed on said passive light modulation part.
- 46. The image display apparatus according to claim 45, further comprising:
a control data generation part providing control data for determining the brightness of said light source, wherein said control data generation part generates control data for reducing an amount of variation in the visual average brightness level of said input video signal caused by the function of said input signal processing part.
- 47. The image display apparatus according to claim 45, wherein the brightness of said light source is adjusted at least frame by frame.
- 48. The image display apparatus according to claim 45, further comprising:
a characteristics detection part detecting a maximum brightness level, a minimum brightness level, and an average brightness level of said input video signal; and a control data generation part calculating a gain for signal amplitude adjustment and a shift amount of a DC level, said gain for signal amplitude adjustment being for increasing a difference between said maximum brightness level and said minimum brightness level to a dynamic range with reference to said average brightness level, and said shift amount of a DC level being for allowing said input video signal to fall within said dynamic range, wherein said Input signal processing part adjusts the amplitude and DC level of said input video signal in accordance with said gain for signal amplitude adjustment and said shift amount of a DC level.
- 49. An image display apparatus displaying an input video signal on a passive light modulation part including a light source, the apparatus comprising:
an input signal processing part amplifying said input video signal so that a maximum amplitude of said input video signal falls within a dynamic range; and a control data generation part adjusting a brightness of said light source so that an average brightness level of a signal outputted from said input signal processing part and displayed on said passive light modulation part becomes equivalent to an average brightness level of the input video signal.
- 50. An image display method of displaying an input video signal on a passive light modulation part including a light source, the method comprising:
an input signal processing step of amplifying said input video signal so as to increase a difference between a maximum brightness level and a minimum brightness level; a step of inputting a video signal on said passive light modulation part, said video signal being obtained as a result of the process of said input signal processing step; and a step of adjusting a brightness of said light source so as to reduce an amount of variation in a visual average brightness level of said input video signal caused by the process of said input signal processing step.
- 51. The image display method according to claim 50, further comprising:
a step of generating control data for determining the brightness of said light source, wherein the generated control data is control data for reducing said amount of variation.
- 52. The image display method according to claim 50, wherein in said step of adjusting brightness of said light source, the brightness of said light source is adjusted at least frame by frame.
- 53. The image display method according to claim 50, further comprising:
a characteristics detection step of detecting a maximum brightness level, a minimum brightness level, and an average brightness level of said input video signal; and a control data generation step of calculating a gain for signal amplitude adjustment and a shift amount of a DC level, said gain for signal amplitude adjustment being for increasing a difference between said maximum brightness level and said minimum brightness level to a dynamic range with reference to said average brightness level, and said shift amount of a DC level being for allowing said input video signal to fall within said dynamic range, wherein in said input signal processing step, the amplitude and DC level of said input video signal are adjusted in accordance with said gain for signal amplitude adjustment and said shift amount of a DC level.
- 54. An image display method of displaying an input video signal on a passive light modulation part including a light source, the method comprising:
an input signal processing step of amplifying said input video signal so as to increase a difference between a maximum brightness level and a minimum brightness level; and a step of adjusting a brightness of said light source so as to reduce a difference between a visual average brightness level of a video signal obtained as a result of the process of said input signal processing step and inputted and displayed on said passive light modulation part and a visual average brightness level of the input video signal, which has not been processed in said input signal processing step, displayed on said passive light modulation part.
- 55. The image display method according to claim 54, further comprising:
a step of generating control data for determining the brightness of said light source, wherein the generated control data is control data for reducing an amount of variation in the visual average brightness level of said input video signal caused by the process of said input signal processing step.
- 56. The image display method according to claim 54, wherein in said step of adjusting brightness of said light source, the brightness of said light source is adjusted at least frame by frame.
- 57. The image display method according to claim 54, further comprising:
a characteristics detection step of detecting a maximum brightness level, a minimum brightness level, and an average brightness level of said input video signal; and a control data generation step of calculating a gain for signal amplitude adjustment and a shift amount of a DC level, said gain for signal amplitude adjustment being for increasing a difference between said maximum brightness level and said minimum brightness level to a dynamic range with reference to said average brightness level, and said shift amount of a DC level being for allowing said input video signal to fall within said dynamic range, wherein in said input signal processing step, the amplitude and DC level of said input video signal are adjusted in accordance with said gain for signal amplitude adjustment and said shift amount of a DC level.
- 58. An image display method of displaying an input video signal on a passive light modulation part including a light source, the method comprising:
an input signal processing step of amplifying said input video signal so that a maximum amplitude of said input video signal falls within a dynamic range; and a control data generation step of adjusting a brightness of said light source so that an average brightness level of a signal obtained as a result of the process of said input signal processing step and displayed on said passive light modulation part becomes equivalent to an average brightness level of said input video signal.
