Claims
- 1. An imaging system comprising:
- an image bearing surface, and
- an intermediate transfer member having an image transfer surface and being operative for transfer of toner images from said image bearing surface to said image transfer surface and for subsequent transfer to a substrate, said intermediate transfer member also comprising:
- a backing layer;
- a compressible layer disposed intermediate said image transfer surface and said backing layer; and
- a heating layer disposed intermediate said backing layer and said compressible layer.
- 2. The imaging system of claim 1 wherein said transfer member also comprises a resilient layer, said heating layer being disposed intermediate said compressible layer and said resilient layer.
- 3. An imaging system comprising:
- an image bearing surface; and
- an intermediate transfer member having an image transfer surface and being operative for transfer of toner images from said image bearing surface to said image transfer surface and for subsequent transfer to a substrate, said intermediate transfer member also comprising:
- a backing layer;
- a conductive layer disposed intermediate said backing layer and said image transfer surface and operative to apply an electric field to said image to enhance transfer of toner images from said image bearing surface to said intermediate transfer member; and
- a heating layer disposed intermediate said backing layer and said transfer surface.
- 4. A system according to claim 1 and wherein said heating layer is operative to heat said image to a temperature sufficient to enhance transfer of toner images from said intermediate transfer member to said substrate.
- 5. Apparatus according to claim 1 and further comprising:
- means for providing first transfer engagement between said intermediate transfer member and said image bearing surface for transfer of an image from said image bearing surface to said intermediate transfer member at a first pressure; and
- means for providing second transfer engagement between said intermediate transfer member and said substrate for transfer of said image from said intermediate transfer member to said substrate at a second pressure, wherein said pressure is substantially constant along particular lines upon said first transfer engagement and said second transfer engagement on said intermediate transfer member, and wherein said heating layer is formed of thin wires along said lines.
- 6. An intermediate transfer blanket for transfer of liquid toner images from a first surface to a second surface and comprising:
- a transfer surface for operative engagement with said first surface and said second surface;
- a resilient layer;
- a sponge layer which is relatively softer than the resilient layer; and
- an area heater disposed between said sponge layer and said resilient layer.
- 7. Apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said toner image is a liquid toner image.
- 8. Apparatus according to claim 2, wherein said toner image is a liquid toner image.
- 9. Apparatus according to claim 4, wherein said toner image is a liquid toner image.
- 10. Apparatus according to claim 5, wherein said toner image is a liquid toner image.
- 11. An intermediate transfer blanket according to claim 6, wherein said toner image is a liquid toner image.
- 12. A system according to claim 5, wherein said heater is energized by alternating current and said thin wires are arranged in adjoining pairs, the instantaneous voltage on each wire of said pair being substantially equal and of opposite sign to that of the instantaneous voltage on the other wire with respect to a reference voltage.
- 13. A system according to claim 12, wherein said reference voltage is ground.
- 14. An imaging system comprising:
- a drum having an image bearing surface; and
- an intermediate transfer member operative for transfer of toner images from said image bearing surface to a transfer surface of said intermediate transfer member and for subsequent transfer to a substrate, said intermediate transfer member comprising:
- a blanket heater layer comprising a plurality of thin elongate members;
- means for applying a first voltage to said blanket heater to heat said blanket; and
- means for applying a second voltage between said blanket heater and said drum to improve transfer of said toner images from said image bearing surface to said intermediate transfer member.
- 15. Apparatus according to claim 14, wherein said first voltage is an alternating current voltage and said thin elongate members are arranged in adjoining pairs, the instantaneous voltage on each elongate member of said pair being substantially equal and of opposite sign to that of the instantaneous voltage on the other enlongate member of the pair with respect to said second voltage.
- 16. Apparatus according to claim 3 and further comprising a compressible layer disposed intermediate said backing layer and said image transfer surface.
- 17. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said compressible layer is a sponge layer.
- 18. An imaging system comprising:
- an image bearing surface; and
- an intermediate transfer member having an image transfer surface and being operative for transfer of toner images from said image bearing surface to said image transfer surface and for subsequent transfer to a substrate, said intermediate transfer member also comprising:
- a backing layer;
- a compressible layer having a thickness less than 1 cm and disposed intermediate said image transfer surface and said backing layer; and
- a heating layer disposed intermediate said backing layer and said transfer surface.
- 19. An imaging system according to claim 18 wherein said compressible layer has a thickness of less than 5 mm.
- 20. An imaging system according to claim 18 wherein said compressible layer has a thickness of less than 1 mm.
- 21. An imaging system according to claim 18 wherein said compressible layer has a thickness less than about 700 microns.
- 22. An imaging system according to claim 18, wherein said heating layer is disposed intermediate said compressible layer and said transfer surface.
