Claims
- 1. A method of forming an image in a photographic element comprising handling the element under a first radiation source and imagewise exposing the element to a second radiation source, said element comprising
- a support having thereon
- a radiation-sensitive silver halide emulsion layer that is sensitive to at least a portion of the region of the spectrum of radiation emitted by the first radiation source and a portion of the region of the spectrum of radiation emitted by the second radiation source, and
- a layer, positioned in said element so as to be between the first radiation source and the radiation-sensitive layer during said handling step, comprising a hydrophilic binder and at least one filter dye that absorbs in the wavelength region emitted by the first source and to which the radiation-sensitive layer is sensitive,
- wherein said filter dye is a solid particle dispersion, having a mean diameter of from about 0.01 to 10 .mu.m, in an amount sufficient to prevent formation in the radiation-sensitive layer of a developable latent image from exposure to the first radiation source, of a dye having the formula:
- [D--(A).sub.y ]--X.sub.n (I)
- where D is a chromophoric radiation-absorbing moiety, said moiety comprising an aromatic ring when y is 0,
- A is an aromatic ring bonded directly or indirectly to D,
- X is a substituent, either on A or on an aromatic ring portion of D, with an ionizable proton having a pKa of 4 to 11 in a 50/50 mixture on a volume basis of ethanol and water,
- y is 0 to 4, and
- n is 1 to 7,
- said dye, when in nonionized form, having a log partition coefficient of from 0 to 6,
- except for dyes of the formula: ##STR82## where R.sup.1 and R.sup.3 each independently represents an alkyl group or an aryl group, R.sup.2 and R.sup.4 each independently represents an alkyl group, an aryl group, or COOR where R is alkyl or aryl, m is 0 or a positive integer, and the molecule contains at least two carboxyl groups in their free acid form and further contains no solubilizing groups.
- 2. A process according to claim 1 wherein the radiation-sensitive layer is sensitive to some radiation between 350 to 900 nm, the first source emits some radiation between 350 and 700 nm, and the second source emits some radiation between 700 nm and 900 nm.
- 3. A process according to claim 2 wherein the filter dye absorbs some radiation between 350 and 700 nm.
- 4. A process according to claim 3 wherein the filter dye comprises a solid particle dispersion of a dye according to the formula:
- D.sub.1 --L.sub.1 .dbd.A.sub.1 (III)
- and a solid particle dispersion of a dye according to the formula:
- D.sub.2 --L.sub.2 .dbd.L.sub.3 --L.sub.4 .dbd.A.sub.2 (IV)
- D.sub.1 -- and D.sub.2 -- are each independently selected from the group consisting of: ##STR83## A.sub.1, A.sub.2, and A.sub.3 are each independently a ketomethylene residue,
- R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are each independently substituted or unsubstituted alkyl or substituted or unsubstituted aryl, or may represent the carbon atoms necessary to form a fused ring with the phenyl ring to which the N atom is attached,
- R.sub.3 is hydrogen, substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, or substituted or unsubstituted aryl,
- R.sub.4 is substituted or unsubstituted alkyl,
- R.sub.5 is substituted or unsubstituted alkyl or substituted or unsubstituted aryl,
- L.sub.1, L.sub.2, L.sub.3, L.sub.4, L.sub.5, L.sub.6, and L.sub.7 are each independently a substituted or unsubstituted methine group,
- Z represents the atoms necessary to complete a substituted or unsubstituted 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic nucleus,
- at least one of A.sub.1, A.sub.2, A.sub.3, Z, and R.sub.4 in the compound of formula (III) is substituted with --X.sub.1 and at least one of A.sub.1, A.sub.2, A.sub.3, Z, and R.sub.4 in the compound of formula (IV) is substituted with --X.sub.2,
- --X.sub.1 and --X.sub.2 are each independently --CO.sub.2 H or --NHSO.sub.2 R.sub.5, and
- p is 0 or 1.
- 5. A process according to claim 1 wherein the radiation sensitive layer is sensitive to some radiation between 350 to 700 nm, the first source emits some radiation between 560 and 700 nm, and the second source emits some radiation between 400 nm and 520 nm.
- 6. A process according to claim 5 wherein the filter dye absorbs some radiation between 540 and 700 nm.
- 7. A process according to claim 6 wherein the filter dye is represented by the formula: ##STR84## wherein A.sub.4 is a ketomethylene residue,
- L.sub.8, L.sub.9, L.sub.10, and L.sub.11 are each independently a substituted or unsubstituted methine group,
- R.sub.6 is substituted or unsubstituted alkyl,
- Z' represents the atoms necessary to complete a substituted or unsubstituted 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic nucleus,
- at least one of A.sub.4, Z', and R.sub.6 is substituted with --X.sub.4, and
- --X.sub.4 is --CO.sub.2 H or --NHSO.sub.2 R.sub.7, wherein R.sub.7 is substituted or unsubstituted alkyl or substituted or unsubstituted aryl.
- 8. A process according to claim 1 wherein the radiation sensitive layer is sensitive to some radiation between 350 to 700 nm, the first source emits some radiation between 450 and 570 nm and the second source emits some radiation between 600 nm and 700 nm.
- 9. A process according to claim 8 wherein the filter dye absorbs some radiation between 450 and 590 nm.
- 10. A process according to claim 9 wherein the filter dye is selected from the group consisting of a compound of formula:
- A.sub.5 --L.sub.12 .dbd.L.sub.13 --L.sub.14 .dbd.A.sub.6 (VI)
- and a compound of formula: ##STR85## wherein A.sub.5, A.sub.6, and A.sub.7 are each independently a ketomethylene residue,
- L.sub.12, L.sub.13, L.sub.14, and L.sub.15 are each independently a substituted or unsubstituted methine group,
- R.sub.8 and R.sub.9 are each independently substituted or unsubstituted alkyl or substituted or unsubstituted aryl, or may represent the carbon atoms necessary to form a fused ring with the phenyl ring to which the N atom is attached,
- R.sub.10 is hydrogen, substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, or substituted or unsubstituted aryl,
- at least one of A.sub.5 and A.sub.6 is substituted with --X.sub.5 and at least one of A.sub.7 and R.sub.9 is substituted with --X.sub.7,
- --X.sub.5 and --X.sub.7 are each independently --CO.sub.2 H or --NHSO.sub.2 R.sub.11, wherein R.sub.11 is substituted or unsubstituted alkyl or substituted or unsubstituted aryl, and
- q is 1 or 3.
- 11. A process according to claim 1 wherein the radiation-sensitive layer is sensitive to some radiation between 350 to 600 nm, the first source emits some radiation between 400 and 510 nm, and the second source emits some radiation between 510 nm and 600 nm.
- 12. A process according to claim 11 wherein the filter dye absorbs some radiation between 380 and 500 nm.
- 13. A process according to claim 12 wherein the filter dye is selected from the group consisting of a compound of formula (VIII): ##STR86## and a compound of formula: ##STR87## wherein A.sub.8 and A.sub.9 are each independently a ketomethylene residue,
- R.sub.12 is substituted or unsubstituted alkyl,
- R.sub.13 and R.sub.14 are each independently substituted or unsubstituted alkyl or substituted or unsubstituted aryl, or may form a carbocyclic ring fused with the phenyl ring to which the N atom is attached,
- R.sub.15 is hydrogen, substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, or substituted or unsubstituted aryl,
- L.sub.16, L.sub.17, and L.sub.18 are each independently a substituted or unsubstituted methine group,
- Z" represents the atoms necessary to complete a substituted or unsubstituted 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic nucleus,
- at least one of A.sub.8, Z", and R.sub.12 is substituted with --X.sub.8 and at least one of A.sub.9 and R.sub.14 is substituted with --X.sub.9, and
- --X.sub.8 and --X.sub.9 are each independently --CO.sub.2 H or --NHSO.sub.2 R.sub.16 wherein R.sub.16 is substituted or unsubstituted alkyl or substituted or unsubstituted aryl.
- 14. A process according to claim 1 wherein said solid particle dispersion has a mean diameter of from about 0.01 to 1 .mu.m.
