Claims
- 1. An implantable access device for permitting access to a predetermined tissue within a patient by a filament, such as a needle, external catheter, steerable wire or optic fiber, percutaneously inserted into said device, said device comprising:
- a housing including a funnel shaped entrance orifice and a focus area, said entrance orifice having a shape of decreasing cross sectional area defining a target area for insertion of said filament into said device, said entrance orifice causing said filament introduced thereinto to be directed to said focus area;
- a body defining a passageway extending from said entrance orifice and said focus area, said passageway terminating in an exit orifice at said predetermined tissue, said passageway receiving said filament from said entrance orifice when said filament is inserted into said device;
- valve means positioned in said passageway and normally remaining closed for providing resistance to fluid flow through said passageway, said valve means also permitting passage of said filament therethrough for enabling said filament to communicate across said valve means with said predetermined tissue, said passageway branching into at least two subpassageways, one of said subpassageways having said valve means located therein; and
- mounting means for subcutaneously mounting said access device.
- 2. An access device according to claim 1 wherein each of said passageways separately includes valve means positioned therein normally remaining closed for providing resistance to fluid flow therethrough, each of said valve means also for permitting passage of said steerable wire therethrough and enabling said filament to communicate with said predetermined tissue.
- 3. An access device according to claim 1 wherein said passageway branches, into three subpassageways communicating with predetermined tissues.
- 4. An access device according to claim 3 wherein each of said three subpassageways separately include valve means positioned therein for preventing fluid flow therethrough, each of said valve means also for permitting passage of said steerable wire therethrough and enabling said filament to communicate with said predetermined tissues.
- 5. An access device according to claim 1 further comprising second valve means positioned in said passageway before said branching thereof, said second valve means separating said passageway into first and second portions, said first portion extending from said entrance orifice to said second valve means, said second portion extending beyond said second valve means, said second portion branching into said subpassageways.
- 6. An access device according to claim 5 wherein one of said subpassageways leads to said preselected tissue and wherein another of said subpassageways leads to another preselected tissue.
- 7. An access device according to claim 5 wherein one of said subpassageways connects with said subpassageway having said valve means at a position after said valve means, said connecting subpassageway including pulp means located in-line therewith for pumping materials to said predetermined tissue.
- 8. An access device according to claim 5 wherein said valve means is axially aligned with said second valve means.
- 9. An access device according to claim 1 wherein said passageway is axially aligned with one of said subpassageways.
- 10. An implantable access device for permitting access to at least one predetermined site within a patient by a filament, such as a needle, external catheter, steerable wire or optic fiber, percutaneously inserted into said access device, said access device comprising:
- a housing including an entrance orifice, a focus area, an exit orifice, and an internal passageway within said housing extending from said focus area to said exit orifice, said entrance orifice having a shape of decreasing cross sectional area defining a target area for insertion of said filament into said device, said entrance orifice causing said filament introduced thereinto to be directed to said focus area, said passageway receiving said filament from said focus area when said filament is inserted into said access device;
- an implanted catheter leading from said exit orifice to at least one predetermined site within the patient, said implanted catheter branching to include at least two subpassageways;
- first valve means positioned in said access device and normally remaining closed for providing resistance to fluid flow through said implanted catheter, said first valve means also permitting passage of said filament therethrough for enabling said filament to communicate across said valve means with the at least one predetermined site within the patient;
- second valve means positioned in one of said subpassageways and normally remaining closed for providing resistance to fluid flow therethrough, said second valve means opening to permit communication thereacross with the at least one predetermined site within the patient; and
- mounting means for subcutaneously mounting said access device.
- 11. An access device according to claim 10 wherein said second valve means permits passage of a steerable wire therethrough enabling the filament to communicate with at least one predetermined site.
- 12. An access device according to claim 10 wherein each of said subpassageways includes separate valve means positioned therein, said separate valve means normally remaining closed for providing resistance to fluid flow therethrough and opening to permit communication thereacross.
- 13. An access device according to claim 12 wherein each of said separate valve means permits passage of a steerable wire therethrough enabling the filament to communicate with at least one predetermined site within the patient.
- 14. An access device according to claim 10 further wherein said first valve means is positioned in said implanted catheter before branching thereof.
- 15. An access device according to claim 10 further wherein said first valve means is positioned in said housing.
- 16. An access device according to claim 10 wherein one of said subpassageways reconnects with another of said subpassageway, said another of said subpassageways having said second valve means positioned therein and said one of said subpassageway reconnecting at a position downstream of said second valve means, said one of said subpassageway including pump means located in-line therewith for pumping materials to said predetermined site.
- 17. An access device according to claim 10 wherein said subpassageways each terminate at a different predetermined site within the patient.
- 18. An access device according to claim 17 wherein said second valve means includes individual valve mechanisms located in each of said subpassageways.
