Claims
- 1. An improved arrangement for effecting the sealing of a butterfly-type throttle valve in an induction system for an internal combustion engine or the like comprising an induction passage and a throttle valve supported for rotation in said induction passage to control the flow therethrough, said throttle valve and said induction passage having adjacent surfaces juxtaposed to each other when said throttle valve is in its closed position, the improvement comprising means providing a seal between said surfaces when said throttle valve is closed to effectively preclude any leakage past said throttle valve, said throttle valve being mounted upon a shaft, said shaft having a slot through which said throttle valve extends, the seal comprising a split resilient metal ring carried by said throttle valve, the gap provided by the slit ends of said ring being positioned within said shaft.
- 2. An improved arrangement for effecting the sealing of a butterfly type throttle valve in an induction system for an internal combustion engine comprising an induction passage, a throttle valve supported for rotation in said induction passage to control the flow therethrough, said throttle valve and said induction passage having adjacent surfaces juxtaposed to each other when said throttle valve is in its closed position, a port extending through the induction passage surface adjacent the periphery of the throttle valve when the throttle valve is in its closed position, the improvement comprising means providing a seal between said surfaces when said throttle valve is closed to effectively preclude any leakage past said throttle valve, said seal being formed in proximity to said port, said throttle valve having reliefs formed thereon extending from the upstream side of said port to a point downstream of said port for permitting flow from said port into said induction passage when said throttle valve is sealed with said induction passage.
- 3. A sealing arrangement as set forth in claim 2 wherein the sealing means is a labyrinth seal formed by cicumferential grooves in the periphery of the throttle valve, at least one of said grooves serving as the relief.
- 4. In an internal combustion engine having a variable volume chamber in which combustion occurs, a main induction passage for delivering a charge to said chamber, an auxiliary induction passage for delivering a charge to said chamber, an auxiliary induction passage having a substantially smaller effective cross sectional area than said main induction passage so that a charge delivered to said chamber through said auxiliary induction passage enters said chamber at a significantly greater velocity, throttle valve means for controlling the flow to said chamber through said induction passages, said throttle valve means including at least one throttle valve for controlling the flow through said main induction passage, the improvement comprising said one throttle valve and said main induction passage having adjacent surfaces juxtaposed to each other when said throttle valve is in its closed position and means for providing a seal between said surfaces when said one throttle valve is closed to effectively preclude any flow to said chamber past said one throttle valve, a port extending through said main induction passage surface adjacent the periphery of said one throttle valve and said seal when said one throttle valve is in its closed position, said one throttle valve having a relief formed thereon extending from said port downstream of said seal when said one throttle valve is in its closed position for permitting flow from said port into said main induction passage.
