Claims
- 1. An electron gun for use in a high power electron accelerator having an accelerator structure in which electrons emitted from said electron gun are accelerated to produce an electron beam, said electron gun comprising:
- a housing for shielding radiation produced by said accelerator; and within said housing; said electron gun further comprising:
- an anode plate having a central aperture;
- a dispenser cathode for emitting electrons;
- a Wehnelt focusing-electrode assembly for focusing electrons emitted by the cathode through said aperture of said anode plate;
- a resistive heater associated with said cathode for heating said cathode; and outside said housing, said electron gun further comprising:
- means responsive to control signal pulses for energizing said heater; and
- control means for generating said control signal pulses at a predetermined repetition rate
- and for predetermined durations to cause said cathode to emit electrons during said durations, said control means being responsive to a signal representative of the resistance of said heater to cause said heater energizing means to energize said heater to deliver with only sufficient energy to maintain the resistance of said heater at a predetermined value.
- 2. An electron gun as defined in claim 1, said housing comprising:
- a first port for connection a gun ion pump,
- a second port for connection to a getter vacuum pump for maintaining the pressure within said housing and said accelerator structure to a predetermined level; and
- said housing being for securing said electron gun to said accelerator structure: and
- said control means being further operable to maintain the voltage of said cathode at a first predetermined nominal value between said control signal pulses and at a second predetermined value during said durations of said control signal pulses, and for adjusting the voltage on said Wehnelt focusing-electrode so as to provide an electron beam current of a predetermined magnitude.
- 3. An electron gun as defined in claim 2, wherein said control means is for adjusting the voltage on said Wehnelt focusing-electrode at a third predetermined value so as to cut-off electron emission from said cathode between said control signal pulses, and at a fourth predetermined value so as to cause electron emission from said cathode during said durations of said control signal pulses.
- 4. An electron gun as defined in claim 1, wherein said accelerator is sufficiently high powered to produce an electron beam having an energy excess 500 keV.
- 5. An electron gun for use in a high power electron accelerator having an accelerator structure in which electrons emitted from said electron gun are accelerated to produce an electron beam having an energy excess 500 keV, said electron gun comprising:
- a stainless steel housing for shielding radiation produced by said accelerator and for axially securing said electron gun to said accelerator structure, said housing including;
- a first port for connection a gun ion pump; and
- a second port for connection to a getter vacuum pump for maintaining the pressure within said housing and said accelerator structure to a predetermined level;
- within said housing, said electron gun further comprising:
- an anode plate having a central aperture;
- a dispenser cathode for emitting electrons;
- a Wehnelt focusing-electrode assembly for focusing electrons emitted by the cathode through said aperture of said anode plate;
- a resistive heater associated with said cathode for heating said cathode;
- and outside said housing, said electron gun further comprising:
- means responsive to a control signal for energizing said heater;
- control means for generating said control signal pulses at a predetermined repetition rate and for predetermined durations to cause said cathode to emit electrons during said durations, said control means being responsive to a signal representative of the resistance of said heater to cause said heater energizing means to energize said heater to deliver with only sufficient energy to maintain the resistance of said heater at a predetermined value; and
- said control means being further operable to maintain the voltage of said cathode at a first predetermined nominal value between said control signals pulses and at a second predetermined value during said durations of said control signal pulses, and for adjusting the voltage on said Wehnelt focusing-electrode at a third predetermined value so as to cut-off electron emission from said cathode between said control signal pulses, and at a fourth predetermined value so as to cause electron emission form said cathode during said durations of said control signal pulses so as to provide an electron beam current of a predetermined magnitude.
