Claims
- 1. An abrasive article comprising:
- a molded abrading body produced from molded polymer material with a primary abrasive grit material and a secondary filler material interspersed homogeneously therethrough, said abrading body comprising from about 1 to about 20% by volume primary abrasive grit, from about 5 to about 80% by volume secondary fillers and from about 5 to about 90% by volume of a thermoformable polymer selected from the group consisting of thermoplastic polymers having a softening point temperature greater than about 100.degree. C. and less than about 400.degree. C. and thermoset polymers.
- 2. The abrasive article of claim 1 wherein the primary abrasive grit is selected from the group consisting of diamond grit, diamond hardness abrasive grits, tungsten carbide, silicon carbide, aluminum oxide, garnet, cubic boron nitride, tungsten carbide, and mixtures thereof.
- 3. The abrasive article of claim 1 wherein said thermoformable polymer is a thermoplastic polymer.
- 4. The abrasive article of claim 2 wherein said thermoformable polymer is a thermoset polymer.
- 5. The abrasive article of claim 2 further comprising a substrate.
- 6. The abrasive article of claim 2 wherein said thermoplastic polymer is polypropylene.
- 7. The abrasive article of claim 5 wherein said thermoplastic polymer is polypropylene.
- 8. The abrasive article of claim 4 wherein said abrasive material is diamond grit.
- 9. An abrasive article comprising:
- an abrasive body produced from a homogeneous composition comprising:
- from about 1% to about 20% by volume primary abrasive grit selected from the groups consisting of diamond grit, tungsten carbide grit, silicon carbide, aluminum oxide, garnet, cubic boron nitride, and mixtures thereof;
- from about 5% to about 80% by volume secondary fillers; and
- from about 5% to about 90% by volume of a thermoformable polymer selected from the group consisting of thermoplastic polymers having a softening point temperature greater than about 100.degree. C. and less than about 400.degree. C. and thermoset polymers.
- 10. The abrasive article of claim 9 wherein said thermoplastic polymer is selected from a group consisting of polypropylenes, polyethylenes, nylons, polycarbonates and mixtures thereof.
- 11. The abrasive article of claim 9 wherein the thermoformable polymer is a thermoplastic polymer.
- 12. The abrasive article of claim 9 wherein said secondary fillers are selected from the group consisting of silicon carbides, aluminum oxides including corundums and mixtures thereof.
- 13. The abrasive article of claim 9 wherein said secondary fillers are selected from the group consisting of powdered organic materials, powdered inorganic materials including powder metals, and mixtures thereof.
- 14. The abrasive article of claim 9 wherein said thermoformable polymer is a thermoset polymer.
- 15. A process of manufacture of an abrasive article comprising the steps of:
- a) providing an injection mold, extrusion or blow molding apparatus for forming a shaped abrasive article;
- b) formulating a mixture, said mixture comprising from about 1 to about 20% by volume primary abrasive grit, from about 5 to about 80% by volume secondary fillers and from about 5 to about 90% of an injection moldable or blow moldable thermoformable polymer, selected from the group consisting of thermoplastic polymers having a softening point temperature greater than about 100.degree. C. and less than about 400.degree. C. and thermoset polymers; and
- c) molding the mixture in said injection molding, extrusion or blow molding apparatus.
- 16. The process of claim 15 wherein the primary abrasive grit is selected from the group consisting of diamond, tungsten carbide, silicon carbide, aluminum oxide, garnet, cubic boron nitride, and mixtures thereof.
- 17. The process of claim 16 wherein the thermoformable polymer is a thermoplastic polymer.
- 18. The process of claim 17 wherein said thermoplastic polymer is polypropylene.
- 19. The process of claim 15 wherein said abrasive grit is diamond grit.
- 20. The process of claim 15 wherein said secondary fillers are selected from the group consisting of silicon carbides, aluminum oxides including corundum and mixtures thereof.
- 21. The process of claim 15 wherein said thermoformable polymer is a thermoset polymer.
- 22. The abrasive article of claim 1 wherein the primary abrasive grit comprises corundum.
- 23. The abrasive article of claim 9 wherein the primary abrasive grit comprises corundum.
- 24. The abrasive article of claim 15 wherein the primary abrasive grit comprises corundum.
