Claims
- 1. An ink containment device for use in an ink-jet printing system having an ink chamber in fluid connection with a printhead, the ink containment device comprising:
- a plurality of walls assembled to form said ink chamber, said walls being arranged to form an opening in said ink chamber for receiving a porous member passed through said opening;
- a porous member mounted between said plurality of walls; and
- a flexible sheet material disposed only partially between said plurality of walls and said porous member, said sheet material being carried by said porous member prior to insertion within said ink chamber to reduce frictional forces between said porous member and at least one of said plurality of walls during insertion of said porous member and said sheet material through said opening in said ink chamber.
- 2. An ink containment device according to claim 1, wherein said sheet material is formed of a low-friction film.
- 3. An ink containment device according to claim 1, wherein:
- said porous member has a first face corresponding to a first wall of said plurality of walls and a second face opposite the first face corresponding to a second wall of said plurality of walls; and
- said sheet material is formed to have a first sheet portion that is adjacent said first face of said porous member and a second sheet portion that is adjacent said second side face of said porous member.
- 4. An ink containment device according to claim 1, wherein said sheet material expands when it is exposed to ink.
- 5. An ink containment device according to claim 1, wherein said sheet material is a porous material capable of absorbing ink.
- 6. An ink containment device according to claim 1, wherein said sheet is porous and expands when it absorbs ink.
- 7. An ink-jet pen, comprising:
- an ink-jet printhead;
- an ink chamber coupled to said printhead and including;
- an inner surface defining said ink chamber and;
- an ink inlet formed in said inner surface and fluidically coupled to said printhead;
- a foam body mounted in said chamber between said inner surface and in fluid communication with said ink inlet; and
- a low friction flexible sheet material, said flexible sheet material being carried by said foam body prior to insertion within said ink chamber and being partially disposed between said foam body and said inner surface to assist in inserting said foam body along said inner surface.
- 8. An ink-jet pen according to claim 7 wherein:
- said foam body has two side faces disposed on opposite sides of said foam body
- said sheet material is formed to have two side portions with each side portion disposed adjacent said two side faces.
- 9. An ink-jet pen according to claim 8 wherein said sheet material is wrapped around said foam body before insertion into said ink chamber.
- 10. An ink-jet pen according to claim 8 wherein said sheet material is a formed of a low friction film and wherein one of said side portions of said sheet material is affixed to each of said side faces of said foam body, respectively.
- 11. An ink-jet pen according to claim 7 wherein said sheet is formed of a porous material that absorbs ink.
- 12. An ink-jet pen according to claim 11 wherein said sheet expands when it absorbs ink.
- 13. A method of manufacturing an ink containment device for an ink-jet printing system that uses an ink-jet printhead, comprising:
- forming an ink chamber to have:
- a first wall,
- two side walls extending from said side walls, and
- an ink inlet coupled to said first wall;
- forming a sheet to have:
- a saddle portion, and
- two side portions;
- forming a porous member to have:
- a first face, and
- two side faces;
- first wrapping said sheet around said porous member so that said saddle portion is in contact with said first face and each of said side portions are in contact with a respective one of said side faces;
- thereafter inserting said porous member and said sheet into said ink chamber so that said first face is adjacent said first wall and said side faces are adjacent said side walls, with said saddle portion of said sheet disposed between said first face and said first wall and said side portions of said sheet disposed between said side faces and said side walls.
- 14. A method according to claim 13, wherein:
- said ink chamber is further formed to include an ink pipe coupled to said ink inlet; and
- said porous member is locally compressed by said ink pipe during said step of inserting said porous member into said ink chamber.
- 15. A method according to claim 13, wherein said sheet is formed of absorbent material that expands when exposed to liquid ink.
- 16. A method according to claim 15, further comprising the step of expanding said sheet by exposing it to liquid ink.
- 17. A method for inserting a porous member into an ink chamber configured for providing ink to an ink jet printhead, the member comprising:
- first positioning a first and second sheet portion adjacent opposite sides of the porous member to only partially cover the porous member;
- thereafter inserting the first and second sheet portions and the porous member as a unitary body into the ink chamber.
