- 7. The invention according to claim 1, wherein a reciprocable arm and roller is positioned above the vacuum manifold means and is synchronized for pushing against the portion of the web segment spanning the advancing and slowing means and forming the loop.
- 8. An interleaving and roll forming apparatus for overlapping successive individual web segments from a continuous stream of web segment material and forming a roll of interleaved web segments, comprising:
- means for advancing a leading end portion of each incoming web segment in the stream at a first speed;
- means for slowing each advancing leading end portion at a second speed slower than the first speed;
- means for forming a loop in an overlap forming zone between opposite ends of each incoming web segment;
- a vacuum manifold means positioned in the overlap forming zone for receiving the loop and for grasping a trailing end portion of each incoming web segment which is free of the advancing means while the leading portion of each incoming web segment is drawn by the slowing means;
- means for spacing each incoming web segment from a successive incoming web segment in the stream;
- means for advancing and guiding the leading end portion of each spaced incoming web segment at the first speed to the slowing means and overlapping it over the trailing end portion of each previous leading web segment before the free trailing end portion is drawn at the second speed from the vacuum manifold means by the slowing means;
- means for receiving and winding the overlapping web segments into a roll, and
- means for forming a subsequent roll of overlapping web segments without interruption of feed into the receiving and winding means upon completing of the first mentioned roll.
- 9. The invention in accordance with claim 8, wherein the advancing and guiding means comprises a plurality of endless individual belts having a lower run extending downstream from the advancing means to a location downstream of the slowing means and having an upper run extending from the downstream location back to the advancing means, and an air nozzle means positioned below the lower run and synchronized for directing a stream of air against the leading end portion and holding same against the lower run of the belts until received by the slowing means.
- 10. The invention in accordance with claim 9, wherein the loop forming means comprises a second air nozzle means positioned above the lower run of the belts which is synchronized to direct a stream of air between the belts against a portion of the web segment spanning the advancing and slowing means for forming the loop therebetween.
- 11. The invention according to claim 10, wherein the loop forming means includes a vacuum box enclosing the vacuum manifold means for providing a suction for assisting the air stream from the second nozzle means in forming the loop in a controlled direction.
- 12. The invention according to claim 11 wherein the web segments are bags.
- 13. The invention according to claim 12, wherein an air knife means is provided adjacent the stream of bags for providing a timed blast of air to each incoming bag for folding the incoming bag in the stream and forming a leading end portion which is grasped by the advancing means and accelerated at the first speed to the slowing means thereby separating it from a successive bag in the stream.
