1. Technical Field
The disclosure generally relates to liquid crystal display (LCD) assemblies and, particularly, to an LCD assembly and a portable electronic device utilizing the LCD assembly.
2. Description of Related Art
LCD assemblies are widely used in portable electronic devices, such as personal digital assistants (PDAs), mobile phones, etc. Often, the LCD assembly includes an LCD module, a driving circuit for driving the LCD module, and a housing to secure the LCD module and the driving circuit. A recent trend in the design of LCD assemblies is toward thinner and lighter weight configurations, particularly when they are to be used in portable electronic devices. However, the LCD assemblies may be mechanically weak when manufactured to be very thin and lightweight.
Therefore, there is room for improvement within the art.
Many aspects of the exemplary LCD assembly and portable electronic device can be better understood with reference to the following drawings. The components in the drawings are not necessarily drawn to scale, the emphasis instead being placed upon clearly illustrating the principles of the LCD assembly and portable electronic device. Moreover, in the drawings, like reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which:
The disclosure is illustrated by way of example and not by way of limitation in the accompanying drawings. It should be noted that references to “an” or “one” embodiment in this disclosure are not necessarily to the same embodiment, and such references can include the meaning of “at least one” embodiment where the context permits.

The reinforcing plate 20 is a rectangular sheet, and is generally formed of metal such as stainless steel in the first exemplary embodiment. The reinforcing plate 20 is configured to cover substantially the same area of the PCB 10 as is occupied by the receiving space 13. The reinforcing plate 20 is fixed to a bottom surface of the PCB 10 by laser welding or fusion, for example.
The LCD module 30 is for displaying information for the portable electronic device. The LCD module 30 includes a driving circuit 31 either directly electronically connected to the PCB 10 or electronically connected to the PCB 10 via a flexible printed circuit (FPC). In the illustrated embodiment, the driving circuit 31 is electronically connected to the PCB 10 via an FPC (not labeled). A plurality of ribs 33 project from sidewalls of the LCD module 30 to abut the inner surface of the frame 11.
During assembly, the LCD module 30 is received in the receiving space 13 and abuts the top surface of the PCB 10, and the ribs 33 abut the inner surface of the frame 11. The free end of each catch 111 is bent down toward the receiving space 13 and abuts or resists a corresponding rib 33 of the LCD module 30. The reinforcing plate 20 is fixed to the bottom surface of the PCB 10 by laser welding or fusion, for example. Thus, the LCD assembly 100 is assembled as shown in

The above-described exemplary embodiments of the LCD assembly include a reinforcing plate. Thus the PCB is reinforced, and the LCD assembly and portable electronic device can remain intact and operate reliably for a long period.
It is believed that the present embodiments and their advantages will be understood from the foregoing description, and it will be apparent that various changes may be made thereto without departing from the spirit and scope of the disclosure or sacrificing all of its material advantages, the examples hereinbefore described merely being preferred or exemplary embodiments of the disclosure.
