Claims
- 1. A nucleic acid sequence encoding an adenovirus fiber protein and a peptide linker added to the carboxyl terminus of said adenovirus fiber protein, wherein said peptide linker is at least 6 but less than 27 amino acids long and said fiber protein forms a trimer when expressed in a mammalian cell.
- 2. The sequence of claim 1 wherein the fiber protein further comprises a ligand coupled to the linker.
- 3. The sequence of claim 1 wherein the fiber protein is altered to not bind to a specific targeted cell type.
- 4. The sequence of claim 1 wherein the linker peptide is PASASASASPGS (Seq. ID No. 1).
- 5. The sequence of claim 1 further comprising the adenovirus genes other than fiber protein encoding gene.
- 6. The sequence of claim 1 further comprising genes selected from the group consisting of genes encoding marker proteins, genes for gene therapy, and genes resulting in death of cells infected with the adenovirus.
- 7. The sequence of claim 2 wherein the ligand is selected from the group consisting of ligands specifically binding to a cell surface receptor and ligands that can be used to couple said fiber protein to other proteins.
- 8. The sequence of claim 7 wherein the fiber protein is altered to bind to a specific targeted cell type.
- 9. The sequence of claim 7 wherein the coupling ligands are selected from the group consisting of avidin binding proteins, biotin binding proteins, proteins bound by avidin, proteins bound by biotin, antibody proteins and fragments of antibody proteins.
