Claims
- 1. An isolated polypeptide selected from the group consisting of:
(a) a polypeptide comprising an amino acid sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 6, 8, 14, 16, 18, 20, 26, 28, 30, 32, 34, 36, 38, 40, 42, 44, 50, or 52; (b) a polypeptide encoded by a nucleotide sequence comprising the sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 5, 7, 13, 15, 17, 19, 25, 27, 29, 31, 33, 35, 37, 39, 41, 43, 49, or 51; (c) a polypeptide encoded by a nucleotide sequence that hybridizes under stringent conditions to a nucleotide sequence comprising the sequences set forth in SEQ ID NO: 5, 7, 13, 15, 17, 19, 25, 27, 29, 31, 33, 35, 37, 39, 41, 43, 49, or 51; (d) an amino acid sequence comprising an amino acid sequence having at least 95% sequence identity to SEQ ID NO: 6 or 8, wherein said sequence has LOX-like activity; (e) an amino acid sequence comprising an amino acid sequence having at least 84% sequence identity to the sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 14 or 16, wherein said sequence has LOX-like activity; (f) an amino acid sequence comprising an amino acid sequence having at least 75% sequence identity to the sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 18 or 20, wherein said sequence has LOX-like activity; (g) an amino acid sequence comprising an amino acid sequence having at least 50% sequence identity to the sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 26 or 28, wherein said sequence has LOX-like activity; (h) an amino acid sequence comprising an amino acid sequence having at least 65% sequence identity to the sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 30 or 32, wherein said sequence has LOX-like activity; (i) an amino acid sequence comprising an amino acid sequence having at least 59% sequence identity to the sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 34 or 36, wherein said sequence has LOX-like activity; (j) an amino acid sequence comprising an amino acid sequence having at least 70% sequence identity to the sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 38 or 40, wherein said sequence has LOX-like activity; (k) an amino acid sequence comprising an amino acid sequence having at least 69% identity to the sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 42 or 44, wherein said sequence has LOX-like activity; and (l) an amino acid sequence comprising an amino acid sequence having at least 52% identity to the sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 50 or 52, wherein said sequence has LOX-like activity.
- 2. An isolated nucleic acid molecule selected from the group consisting of:
(a) a nucleic acid molecule comprising a nucleotide sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 5, 7, 13, 15, 17, 19, 25, 27, 29, 31, 33, 35, 37, 39, 41, 43, 49, or 51; (b) a nucleic acid molecule comprising a nucleotide sequence encoding an amino acid sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 6, 8, 14, 16, 18, 20, 26, 28, 30, 32, 34, 36, 38, 40, 42, 44, 50, or 52; (c) a nucleic acid molecule comprising an antisense sequence corresponding to a sequence of a) or b); (d) a nucleic acid molecule comprising a nucleotide sequence that hybridizes under stringent conditions to the nucleotide sequences of a), b), or c), wherein said sequence encodes a polypeptide having LOX-like activity; (e) a nucleic acid molecule comprising a nucleotide sequence having at least 60% sequence identity to the sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 13, 17, 25, 27, 29, 31, 33, 35, 37, 41, 49, or 51, wherein said sequence encodes a polypeptide having LOX-like activity; (f) a nucleic acid molecule comprising a nucleotide sequence having at least 98% sequence identity to the sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 7, wherein said sequence encodes a polypeptide having LOX-like activity; (g) a nucleic acid molecule comprising a nucleotide sequence having at least 90% sequence identity to the sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 15, wherein said sequence encodes a polypeptide having LOX-like activity; (h) a nucleic acid molecule comprising a nucleotide sequence having at least 81% sequence identity to the sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 19, wherein said sequence encodes a polypeptide having LOX-like activity; (i) a nucleic acid molecule comprising a nucleotide sequence having at least 65% sequence identity to the sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 39, wherein said sequence encodes a polypeptide having LOX-like activity; (j) a nucleic acid molecule comprising a nucleotide sequence having at least 66% sequence identity to the sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 43, wherein said sequence encodes a polypeptide having LOX-like activity; and (k) a nucleic acid molecule comprising a nucleotide sequence having at least 95% sequence identity to the sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 5, wherein said sequence encodes a polypeptide having LOX-like activity.
- 3. A DNA construct comprising a nucleotide sequence of claim 2, wherein said nucleotide sequence is operably linked to a promoter that drives expression in a host cell.
- 4. A cell having stably incorporated into its genome at least one DNA construct comprising a nucleotide sequence operably linked to a promoter that drives expression in said cell, wherein said nucleotide sequence is selected from the group consisting of:
(a) a nucleic acid molecule comprising a nucleotide sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 5, 7, 13, 15, 17, 19, 25, 27, 29, 31, 33, 35, 37, 39, 41, 43, 49, or 51; (b) a nucleic acid molecule comprising a nucleotide sequence encoding an amino acid sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 6, 8, 14, 16, 18, 20, 26, 28, 30, 32, 34, 36, 38, 40, 42, 44, 50, or 52; (c) a nucleic acid molecule comprising an antisense sequence corresponding to a sequence of a) or b); (d) a nucleic acid molecule comprising a nucleotide sequence that hybridizes under stringent conditions to the nucleotide sequences of a), b), or c), wherein said sequence encodes a polypeptide having LOX-like activity; (e) a nucleic acid molecule comprising a nucleotide sequence having at least: 60% sequence identity to the sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 13, 17, 25, 27, 29, 31, 33, 35, 37, 41, 49, or 51, wherein said sequence encodes a polypeptide having LOX-like activity; (f) a nucleic acid molecule comprising a nucleotide sequence having at least 98% sequence identity to the sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 7, wherein said sequence encodes a polypeptide having LOX-like activity; (g) a nucleic acid molecule comprising a nucleotide sequence having at least 90% sequence identity to the sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 15, wherein said sequence encodes a polypeptide having LOX-like activity; (h) a nucleic acid molecule comprising a nucleotide sequence having at least 81% sequence identity to the sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 19, wherein said sequence encodes a polypeptide having LOX-like activity; (i) a nucleic acid molecule comprising a nucleotide sequence having at least 65% sequence identity to the sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 39, wherein said sequence encodes a polypeptide having LOX-like activity; (j) a nucleic acid molecule comprising a nucleotide sequence having at least 66% sequence identity to the sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 43, wherein said sequence encodes a polypeptide having LOX-like activity; and (k) a nucleic acid molecule comprising a nucleotide sequence having at least 95% sequence identity to the sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 5, wherein said sequence encodes a polypeptide having LOX-like activity.
- 5. The cell of claim 4, wherein said cell is a plant cell.
- 6. A transformed plant having stably incorporated into its genome at least one DNA construct comprising a nucleotide sequence operably linked to a heterologous promoter that drives expression in a plant cell, wherein said nucleotide sequence is selected from the group consisting of:
(a) a nucleic acid molecule comprising a nucleotide sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 5, 7, 13, 15, 17, 19, 25, 27, 29, 31, 33, 35, 37, 39, 41, 43, 49, or 51; (b) a nucleic acid molecule comprising a nucleotide sequence encoding an amino acid sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 6, 8, 14, 16, 18, 20, 26, 28, 30, 32, 34, 36, 38, 40, 42, 44, 50, or 52; (c) a nucleic acid molecule comprising an antisense sequence corresponding to a sequence of a) or b); (d) a nucleic acid molecule comprising a nucleotide sequence that hybridizes under stringent conditions to the nucleotide sequences of a), b), or c), wherein said sequence encodes a polypeptide having LOX-like activity; (e) a nucleic acid molecule comprising a nucleotide sequence having at least: 60% sequence identity to the sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 13, 17, 25, 27, 29, 31, 33, 35, 37, 41, 49, or 51, wherein said sequence encodes a polypeptide having LOX-like activity; (f) a nucleic acid molecule comprising a nucleotide sequence having at least 98% sequence identity to the sequence set forth in SEQ iID NO: 7, wherein said sequence encodes a polypeptide having LOX-like activity; (g) a nucleic acid molecule comprising a nucleotide sequence having at least 90% sequence identity to the sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 15, wherein said sequence encodes a polypeptide having LOX-like activity; (h) a nucleic acid molecule comprising a nucleotide sequence having at least 81% sequence identity to the sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 19, wherein said sequence encodes a polypeptide having LOX-like activity; (i) a nucleic acid molecule comprising a nucleotide sequence having at least 65% sequence identity to the sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 39, wherein said sequence encodes a polypeptide having LOX-like activity; (j) a nucleic acid molecule comprising a nucleotide sequence having at least 66% sequence identity to the sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 43, wherein said sequence encodes a polypeptide having LOX-like activity; and (k) a nucleic acid molecule comprising a nucleotide sequence having at least 95% sequence identity to the sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 5, wherein said sequence encodes a polypeptide having LOX-like activity.

- 10. The plant of claim 10, wherein said promoter is a pathogen-inducible promoter.
- 11. The plant of claim 6, wherein said plant is a monocot.
- 12. The plant of claim 12, wherein said monocot is maize, wheat, rice, barley, sorghum, or rye.
- 13. The plant of claim 6, wherein said plant is a dicot.
- 14. The transformed seed of the plant of claim 6.

A method for enhancing a plant defense response, said method comprising stably introducing into the genome of a plant at least one DNA construct comprising a nucleotide sequence operably linked to a heterologous promoter that drives expression in a plant cell, wherein said nucleotide sequence is selected from the group consisting of:
(a) a nucleic acid molecule comprising a nucleotide sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 5, 7, 13, 15, 17, 19, 25, 27, 29, 31, 33, 35, 37, 39, 41, 43, 49, or 51; (b) a nucleic acid molecule comprising a nucleotide sequence encoding an amino acid sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 6, 8, 14, 16, 18, 20, 26, 28, 30, 32, 34, 36, 38, 40, 42, 44, 50, or 52; (c) a nucleic acid molecule comprising an antisense sequence corresponding to a sequence of a) or b); (d) a nucleic acid molecule comprising a nucleotide sequence that hybridizes under stringent conditions to the nucleotide sequences of a), b) or c), wherein said sequence encodes a polypeptide having LOX-like activity; (e) a nucleic acid molecule comprising a nucleotide sequence having at least 60% sequence identity to the sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 13, 17, 25, 27, 29, 31, 33, 35, 37, 41, 49, or 51, wherein said sequence encodes a polypeptide having LOX-like activity; (f) a nucleic acid molecule comprising a nucleotide sequence having at least 98% sequence identity to the sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 7, wherein said sequence encodes polypeptide having LOX-like activity; (g) a nucleic acid molecule comprising a nucleotide sequence having at least 90% sequence identity to the sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 15, wherein said sequence encodes polypeptide having LOX-like activity; (h) a nucleic acid molecule comprising a nucleotide sequence having at least 81% sequence identity to the sequence set forth in SEQ If) NO: 19, wherein said sequence encodes polypeptide having LOX-like activity; (i) a nucleic acid molecule comprising a nucleotide sequence having at least 65% sequence identity to the sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 39, wherein said sequence encodes polypeptide having LOX-like activity; (j) a nucleic acid molecule comprising a nucleotide sequence having at least 66% sequence identity to the sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 43, wherein said sequence encodes a polypeptide having LOX-like activity; and (k) a nucleic acid molecule comprising a nucleotide sequence having at least 95% sequence identity to the sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 5, wherein said sequence encodes a polypeptide having LOX-like activity.
- 16. An isolated promoter comprising a nucleotide sequence that initiates transcription in a plant cell wherein said nucleotide sequence is selected from the group consisting of:
(a) a nucleic acid molecule comprising the nucleotide sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 54; (b) a nucleic acid molecule comprising a nucleotide sequence having at least 70% sequence identity to the nucelotide sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 54; (c) a nucleic acid molecule comprising a nucleotide sequence having at least 80% sequence identity to the nucleotide sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 54; (d) a nucleic acid molecule comprising at least 50 contiguous nucleotides of the sequence set forth SEQ ID NO: 54.
- 17. A method for driving expression of a heterologous nucleotide sequence in a plant, said method comprising transforming a plant cell with a DNA construct comprising said heterologous nucleotide sequence operably linked to a LOX gene promoter that initiates transcription in a plant cell, and regenerating a stably transformed plant from said plant cell, wherein said promoter comprises a nucleotide sequence selected from the group consisting of:
(a) a nucleotide sequence comprising the sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 54; a) a nucleotide sequence comprising at least 40 contiguous nucleotides of the sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 54; and b) a nucleotide sequence that shares at least 70% sequence identity to the sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 54.
