Claims
- 1. A negatively charged electrographic developer comprising an electrically insulating carrier liquid having stably dispersed therein (1) a halogenated polymer, and having dissolved therein (2) a copolymer of a quaternary ammonium salt monomer and a solubilizing monomer, said copolymer being free of cations of alkali metals and alkaline earth metals, and (3) a copolymer of a polar monomer and a solubilizing monomer, the amounts of solubilizing monomer units in each copolymer being sufficient to make the copolymer soluble in the carrier liquid.
- 2. An electrographic developer of claim 1 wherein said polar monomer is selected from the group consisting of sulfoalkyl acrylates and methacrylates; metal salts of sulfoalkyl acrylates and methacrylates; amine salts of sulfoalkyl acrylates and methacrylates; metal salts of acrylic and methacrylic acids; amine salts of acrylic and methacrylic acids.
- 3. An electrographic developer of claim 1 wherein said quaternary ammonium salt monomer is selected from the group consisting of: ##STR3## wherein: R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are alkyl or aryl radicals of 1 to 30 carbon atoms;
- R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 are hydrogen or lower alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms;
- Q represents the atoms necessary to complete a 5 or 6-membered heterocyclic ring;
- X.sup.- is an anion; and
- Z is selected from the group consisting of ##STR4## where R.sup.6 is alkylene, arylene or arylenealkylene of 1 to 20 carbon atoms, and n is 0 or 1.
- 4. An electrographic developer of claim 1 wherein said halogenated polymer is selected from the group consisting of halogenated polyolefins, halogenated paraffin waxes and halogenated rubbers.
- 5. An electrographic developer of claim 1 which comprises from about 0.01 to about 5 weight percent of soluble acrylic polar copolymer, from about 0.01 to about 5 weight percent of soluble quaternary ammonium salt copolymer, and from about 0.01 to about 5 weight percent halogenated hydrocarbon polymer.
- 6. An electrographic developer comprising an electrically insulating carrier liquid having dispersed therein (1) an addition polymer of an acrylic polar monomer and at least one solubilizing monomer, said polar momomer being selected from the group consisting of: sulfoalkyl acrylates, sulfoalkyl methacrylates, metal salts of sulfoalkyl acrylates, metal salts of sulfoalkyl methacrylates, amine salts of sulfoalkyl acrylates, amine salts of sulfoalkyl methacrylate, metal salts of acrylic and methacrylic acids, amine salts of acrylic and methacrylic acids, and mixtures thereof; (2) a copolymer of a quaternary ammonium salt monomer and a solubilizing monomer, said copolymer being free of cations of alkali metals and alkaline earth metals, said quaternary ammonium salt monomer being selected from the group consisting of: ##STR5## wherein: R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are alkyl or aryl radicals of 1 to 30 carbon atoms;
- R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 are hydrogen or lower alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms;
- Q represents the atoms necessary to complete a 5 or 6-membered heterocyclic ring;
- X.sup.- is an anion; and
- Z is selected from the group consisting of ##STR6## where R.sup.6 is alkylene, arylene or arylenealkylene of 1 to 20 carbon atoms, and n is 0 or 1.
- 7. An electrographic developer of claim 6 wherein said composition comprises from about 0.01 to about 5 weight percent of soluble acrylic polar copolymer, from about 0.01 to about 5 weight percent of quaternary ammonium salt copolymer, and from about 0.01 to about 5 weight percent halogenated hydrocarbon polymer.
- 8. An electrographic developer of claim 6 wherein said halogenated hydrocarbon polymer is chlorinated polyethylene.
- 9. An electrographic developer of claim 6 wherein said halogenated hydrocarbon polymer is poly(vinyl chloride-co-vinylidene chloride).
- 10. An electrographic developer comprising an electrically insulating paraffinic carrier liquid having dispersed therein poly(vinyltoluene-co-lauryl methylacrylate-co-lithium methacrylate-co-methacrylic acid), poly(vinyltoluene-co-lauryl methacrylate-co-methacryloyloxyethyltrimethylammonium p-toluenesulfonate), and chlorinated polyethylene.
- 11. An electrographic developer composition comprising an electrically paraffinic insulating carrier liquid having dispersed therein poly(vinyltoluene-co-lauryl methacrylate-co-lithium methacrylate-co-methacrylic acid), poly(vinyltoluene-co-lauryl-methacrylate-co-dimethyloctadecylvinylbenzylammonium chloride) and chlorinated polyethylene.
