Claims
- 1. A process of increasing the circulating level of a gene product in the blood stream of a primate for a period of time greater than about 30 days, the process comprising transforming muscle cells of the primate with a polynucleotide that encodes the gene product, wherein the expression vector drives expression of the polynucleotide.
- 3. The process of claim 1 wherein the primate is a human.
- 4. The process of claim 1 wherein the expression vector is a plasmid.
- 5. The process of claim 1 wherein the expression vector is a replication defective adenoviral vector.
- 6. The process of claim 1 wherein the muscle cells are transformed in vivo.
- 7. The process of claim 1 wherein the muscle cells are transformed ex vivo.
- 8. The process of claim 1 wherein the gene product is a polypeptide.
- 9. The process of claim 7 wherein the polypeptide is a hormone.
- 10. The process of claim 8 wherein the hormone is human growth hormone or erythropoietin.
- 11. The process of claim 1 wherein the circulating level of the gene product is increased for a period of time greater than about 60 days.
- 12. The process of claim 1 wherein the circulating level of the gene product is increased for a period of time greater than about 90 days.
- 13. The process of claim 1 wherein the circulating level of the gene product is increased for a period of time greater than about 120 days.
- 14. The process of claim 1 wherein the circulating level of the gene product is increased for a period of time ranging from about 90 days to about 365 days.
- 15. The process of claim 1 wherein the muscle cells are cardiac or skeletal muscle cells.
- 16. The process of claim 14 wherein the muscle cells are skeletal muscle cells.
