Claims
- 1. A wheel, comprising:a hub; a plurality of roller mounting brackets coupled to said hub; and a plurality of rollers each rotatably coupled to at least one of said roller mounting brackets at a roller mounting angle between 20 and 90 degrees, said rollers comprising; a core rotatably coupled to said roller mounting bracket, said core having a first end and a second end, and a contact surface of flexible material coupled to and radially disposed about said core, said contact surface comprising, a first zone radially disposed about said core, said first zone positioned between said first and second ends of said core, and a second zone radially disposed about said core, said second zone positioned between said first zone and said first end of said core and possessing a material stiffness that is different from said first zone.
- 2. A wheel according to claim 1 wherein said first zone of said contact surface is made of a material that is different from that of said second zone.
- 3. A wheel according to claim 1 wherein said first zone and said second zone are on different segments of said roller.
- 4. A wheel according to claim 1 wherein said contact surface of said roller further comprises:a third zone with surface grooves disposed about said roller, said third zone positioned between said first and second ends of said core, and a fourth zone with no surface grooves, said fourth zone positioned between said third zone and said first end of said core.
- 5. A roller for an omni-directional wheel, comprising:a core, said core having a first end and a second end; and a contact surface of flexible material coupled to and radially disposed about said core, said contact surface comprising; a first zone radially disposed about said core between said first and second ends of said core, and a second zone radially disposed about said core between said first zone and said first end of said core and possessing a material stiffness that is different from said first zone.
- 6. A roller according to claim 5 wherein said first zone and said second zone are on different segments of said roller.
- 7. A vehicle, comprising:a chassis; an axle rotatably coupled to said chassis; and a wheel coupled to said axle, said wheel comprising; a hub coupled to said axle, a plurality of rollers rotatably coupled to said hub, said rollers comprising, a core rotatably coupled to said hub, said core having a first end and a second end, and a contact surface of flexible material coupled to and radially disposed about said core, said contact surface comprising; a first zone radially disposed about said core positioned between said first and second ends of said core, and a second zone radially disposed about said core, said second zone positioned between said first zone and said first end of said core and possessing a material stiffness that is different from said first zone.
- 8. A wheel, comprising:a hub with an axis of rotation; a roller mounting bracket coupled to said hub; a first roller rotatably coupled to said roller mounting bracket, said first roller having an axis of rotation that intesects with and is orthogonal to said hub's axis of rotation; and a second roller rotatably coupled to said roller mounting bracket, said second roller having an axis of rotation that intersects and is orthogonal to said hub's axis of rotation and is also orthogonal to said first roller's axis of rotation, said first and said second rollers each comprising a core rotatably coupled to said roller mounting bracket, said core having a first end and a second end, and a contact surface of elastomeric material coupled to and radially disposed about said core with a volumetric shape such that the exterior profile of said contact surface of all said rollers forms a noncircular profile when viewed from a perspective laterally displaced from and coincident with the axis of rotation of said hub.
- 9. A wheel, comprising:a hub with an axis of rotation; a roller mounting bracket said coupled to hub; a first roller rotatably coupled to said roller mounting bracket, said first roller having an axis of rotation that intersects with and is orthogonal to said hub's axis of rotation; and a second roller rotatably coupled to said roller mounting bracket said second roller having an axis of rotation that intesects and is orthogonal to said hub's axis of rotation and is also orthogonal to said first roller's axis of rotation, said first and said second rollers each comprising a core rotatably coupled to said roller mounting bracket, said core having a first end and a second end, and a contact surface of elastomeric material coupled to and radially disposed about said core comprising a first zone with surface grooves disposed about said roller, said first zone positioned between said first and second ends of said core, and a second zone with no surface grooves, said second zone positioned between said first zone and said first end of said core.
- 10. A wheel, comprising:a hub with an axis of rotation; a roller mounting bracket coupled to said hub; a first roller rotatably coupled to said roller mounting bracket, said first roller having an axis of rotation that intersects with and is orthogonal to said hub's axis of rotation; and a second roller rotatable coupled to said roller mounting bracket, said second roller having an axis of rotation that intersects and is orthogonal to said hub's axis of rotation and is also orthogonal to the said first roller's axis of rotation, said first and said second rollers each comprising a core rotatably coupled to said roller mounting bracket, said core having a first end and a second end, and a contact surface of elastomeric material coupled to and radially disposed about said core comprising a first zone disposed about said roller, said first zone positioned between said first and second ends of said core, and a second zone with no surface grooves, said second zone positioned between said first zone and said first end of said core and possessing a material stiffness that is different from said first zone.
