Claims
- 1. A machine for cutting a log of web material into a plurality of rolls, said machine comprising:
- a unit rotating about a first axis;
- a cutting blade on said unit, said cutting blade rotating at a substantially constant speed about a second axis, said cutting blade being rotated by a drive;
- a driving device which moves said cutting blade in a forward and backward motion;
- a log feeder for feeding a log to be cut in a forward direction;
- wherein said log feeder moves said log at a lower speed during cutting and at a higher speed between each of two sequential cuttings performed on said log, said lower speed being equal to a speed of axial motion of said cutting blade in a forward direction parallel to an axis of rotation of said cutting blade during a cutting operation of said cutting blade;
- and wherein a synchronizer is present for maintaining synchronism between reciprocating axial motion of the cutting blade and motion of the log feeder.
- 2. The machine of claim 1 wherein said unit includes a pair of grinding wheels which move axially with said cutting blade.
- 3. The machine of claim 2 wherein said pair of grinding wheels are in alignment with said cutting blade.
- 4. The machine of claim 1 wherein said unit includes a first motor for rotating said unit; said log feeder includes a second motor for feeding said log; and said synchronizer includes a programmable central processing unit for controlling synchronism between said first motor and said second motor.
- 5. The machine according to claim 1 including a mechanical connection which connects said log feeder to said unit and which imparts rotary motion to said unit, said mechanical connection ensuring synchronism between axial motion of the unit and motion of the log feeder.
- 6. The machine according to claim 5 wherein said mechanical connection comprises an epicyclic train, an axle which rotates at a speed proportional to rotary speed of the unit, and a mover for moving a gear-holding box of said epicyclic train, said mover including an intermediate speed; and wherein an output axle of the epicyclic train is connected to said log feeder.
- 7. A machine according to claim 6 wherein said mover further includes an intermitter having an input shaft which rotates at a speed proportional to speed of the rotary motion of the unit, and having an output shaft kinematically connected to the gear-holding box of said epicyclic train.
- 8. The machine according to claim 7 further including a modifier to change velocity ratio between the output shaft of the intermitter and the gear-holding box of the epicyclic train.
- 9. The machine according to claim 8 further comprising a set of gears interposed between said output shaft of the intermitter and the gear-holding box, wherein at least some gears of said set of gears are replaced in order to modify the velocity ratio.
- 10. The machine according to claim 6 wherein a motor controlled through a central processing unit is combined with the gear-holding box of the epicyclic train.
- 11. The machine according to claim 1 wherein said driving device for moving the cutting blade in a forward and backward motion comprises cam and tappet members.
- 12. A method for transversal cutting of a log into a plurality of rolls, said method comprising:
- providing a cutting unit;
- advancing a log to be cut toward said cutting unit in a continuous motion;
- providing a cutting blade on said cutting unit;
- rotating said cutting unit;
- rotating said cutting blade at substantially constant speed in an orbit, said cutting blade performing subsequent cuts on said log perpendicularly to an axis of the log;
- providing a drive for rotating said cutting blade;
- moving said cutting blade in a forward and backward motion;
- moving said log at a first lower feeding speed during cutting, said lower feeding speed substantially corresponding to axial speed of said cutting blade during forward motion of the cutting blade, and moving said log at a second higher feeding speed between each of two sequential cuttings performed on said log while the cutting blade is moved backwards; and
- synchronizing advancing movement of said log with axial reciprocating movement of the cutting blade.
- 13. The method of claim 12 further comprising moving a pair of grinding wheels present on said cutting unit axially with said cutting blade.
- 14. The method of claim 13 further comprising aligning said pair of grinding wheels with said cutting blade.
