Claims
- 1. The combination of, a driving member, a spaced driven member and mechanism for causing the driving member to move the driven member back and forth while allowing the driving member to yield in either direction relative to the driven member if the latter is stopped, said driving and driven members having inboard sides facing toward one another and having outboard sides facing away from one another, said mechanism comprising first and second side-by-side rods spanning the space between said members, each of said rods being movable back and forth relative to each of said members and each extending beyond the outboard side of each of said members, first and second stop means located between said members, said first stop means being secured rigidly to said first rod and slidably receiving said second rod, said second stop means being secured rigidly to said second rod and slidably receiving said first rod, first and second side-by-side springs telescoped over said first and second rods, respectively, and each compressed between said first and second stop means, said first and second stop means normally being pressed against the inboard side of said driving and driven members, respectively, by said springs, third stop means on one end portion of said first rod and normally engaging the outboard side of said driving member to limit movement of said driving member away from said driven member, and fourth stop means on the opposite end portion of said second rod and normally engaging the outboard side of said driven member to limit movement of said driven member away from said driving member.
- 2. The combination defined in claim 1 in which said first stop means comprises a first element having one portion secured rigidly to said first rod and having another portion rigid with said one portion and slidably receiving said second rod, one end of said first spring bearing against said one portion of said first element, and the corresponding end of said second spring bearing against the other portion of said first element.
- 3. Mechanism as defined in claim 2 in which said second stop means comprises a second element having one portion secured rigidly to said second rod and having another portion rigid with said one portion and slidably receiving said first rod, the opposite end of said second spring bearing against said one portion of said second element, and the opposite end of said first spring bearing against the other portion of said second element.
- 4. The combination defined in claim 3 in which each of said rods extends slidably through each of said members.
- 5. The combination of, a driving member, a spaced driven member and mechanism for causing a driving member to move a driven member back and forth while allowing the driving member to yield in either direction relative to the driven member if the latter is stopped, said driving and driven members having inboard sides facing toward one another and having outboard sides facing away from one another, said mechanism comprising first and second side-by-side rods spanning the space between said members and each being movable back and forth relative to each of said members, each of said rods extending beyond the outboard side of each of said members, first and second stops located between said members, said first stop having one portion secured rigidly to said first rod adjacent said driven member and having another portion rigid with said first portion and movably receiving said second rod adjacent said driven member, said second stop being secured rigidly to said second rod adjacent said driving member and being movable back and forth relative to said first rod, first and second side-by-side compression springs telescoped over said first and second rods, respectively, said first spring being compressed when said driving member is moved toward said driven member and having one end bearing against said one portion of said first stop, said second spring having one end bearing against said other portion of said first stop and having an opposite end bearing against said second stop, said first and second stops normally being pressed against the inboard side of said driving and driven members, respectively, by said springs, a third stop on the end portion of said first rod adjacent said driving member and normally engaging the outboard side of said driving member to limit movement of said driving member away from said driven member, and a fourth stop on the end portion of said second rod adjacent said driven member and normally engaging the outboard side of said driven member to limit movement of said driven member away from said driving member.
