Claims
- 1. A magnetic recording medium comprising (1) a non-magnetic substrate, (2) a non-magnetic undercoat film, (3) a magnetic film, and (4) a protective film,
wherein the films are successively formed on the substrate by sputtering; and sputtering is repeatedly carried out several times by sequentially using targets in the sputtering to form the non-magnetic undercoat film and/or the magnetic film, wherein at least two targets are formed of different materials.
- 2. A magnetic recording medium comprising (1) a non-magnetic substrate, (2) a non-magnetic undercoat film, (3) a magnetic film, and (4) a protective film,
wherein the films are successively formed on the substrate by sputtering, wherein the magnetic film has a structure in which a number of magnetic grains are separated from one another by a grain boundary phase comprising the same constitutional element that constitutes the magnetic grains, and the intergrain distance in the grain boundary phase is 10 Å or more.
- 3. A magnetic recording medium according to claim 2, wherein the magnetic film comprises Co and Cr, and a ratio of a Cr concentration (c2) of the grain boundary phase to a Cr concentration (c1) of the magnetic grains, represented by c2/c1, is 1.4 or higher.
- 4. A magnetic recording medium according to claim 3, wherein the Cr concentration (c2) of the grain boundary phase is 15 at % or higher.
- 5. A magnetic recording medium according to any one of claims 2 to 4, wherein the magnetic grains have a grain size of 60-200 Å.
- 6. A magnetic recording medium comprising (1) a non-magnetic substrate, (2) a non-magnetic undercoat film, (3) a magnetic film, and (4) a protective film,
wherein the films are successively formed on the substrate by sputtering, wherein the magnetic film comprises Co and Cr and has a structure in which a number of magnetic grains are separated from one another by a grain boundary phase, and wherein a ratio of a Cr concentration (c2) of the grain boundary phase to a Cr concentration (c1) of the magnetic grains, represented by c2/c1, is 1.4 or higher.
- 7. A magnetic recording medium comprising (1) a non-magnetic substrate, and on the substrate, (2) a non-magnetic undercoat film, (3) a magnetic film, and (4) a protective film, wherein the magnetic film has a multi-layer structure in which magnetic unit layers formed of a magnetic material and a non-magnetic layer formed of a non-magnetic material are alternately stacked and a magnetic unit layer is an innermost layer.
- 8. A magnetic recording medium comprising (1) a non-magnetic substrate, and on the substrate, (2) a non-magnetic undercoat film, (3) a magnetic film, and (4) a protective film, wherein the magnetic film has a multi-layer structure in which magnetic unit layers formed of a magnetic material and a non-magnetic layer formed of a non-magnetic material predominantly comprising Cr are alternately stacked and a non-magnetic unit layer formed of a non-magnetic material predominantly comprising Cr is an innermost layer.
- 9. A magnetic recording medium according to claim 7 or 8, wherein the magnetic film has a magnetic unit layer as an outermost layer.
- 10. A method for producing a magnetic recording medium comprising (1) a non-magnetic substrate, (2) a non-magnetic undercoat film, (3) a magnetic film, and (4) a protective film,
wherein the method uses sputtering and involves a plurality of targets, at least two targets of which are formed of different materials, said method comprising
forming the films successively on the substrate, and carrying out sputtering repeatedly a number of times by sequential use of the targets to form the non-magnetic undercoat film, the magnetic film or both the non-magnetic film and the magnetic film.
- 11. A method for producing a magnetic recording medium comprising a disk including (1) a non-magnetic substrate, (2) a non-magnetic undercoat film, or (3) both a non-magnetic undercoat film and a magnetic film,
wherein the method uses sputtering and involves a plurality of targets, at least two targets of which are formed of different materials, said method comprising
holding the disk on a rotatable pallet, wherein the pallet is sequentially set at positions opposite the targets during rotation of the pallet, forming the films successively on the substrate, and carrying out sputtering repeatedly a number of times by sequential use of the targets while the pallet is rotated, to form the non-magnetic undercoat film, the magnetic film or both the non-magnetic undercoat film and the magnetic film on the disk.
- 12. A method for producing a magnetic recording medium according to claim 11, wherein the method includes sputtering while the pallet is rotated continuously.
- 13. A method for producing a magnetic recording medium according to any one of claims 10 to 12, wherein at least one target comprises some of the materials of the non-magnetic undercoat film, the magnetic film or both the non-magnetic undercoat film and the magnetic film.
- 14. A method for producing a magnetic recording medium according to claim 13, wherein at least one target comprises an elementary substance.
- 15. A method for producing a magnetic recording medium according to claim 11 or 12, wherein the method includes setting the targets at positions opposite both sides of the disk, and forming the non-magnetic undercoat film, the magnetic film or both the non-magnetic undercoat film and the magnetic film at both sides of the disk by use of the targets.
- 16. A method for producing a magnetic recording medium comprising a disk formed of a non-magnetic substrate coated with (1) a non-magnetic undercoat film, and on the disk, (2) a magnetic film comprising magnetic unit layers comprised of a magnetic material and non-magnetic unit layers comprised of a non-magnetic material superposed one on another, and (3) a protective film,
wherein the method uses sputtering and involves a plurality of targets, wherein the plurality of targets comprises at least one magnetic target formed of a magnetic material and the remaining targets comprise at least one non-magnetic target formed of a non-magnetic material, and a target employed initially for forming the magnetic film is a magnetic target, said method comprising
holding the disk on a rotatable pallet and setting the pallet at a position so that the disk sequentially opposes a magnetic target and a non-magnetic target; and carrying out sputtering repeatedly a number of times by sequential use of a magnetic target and rotating the pallet with the non-magnetic target to form the magnetic layer.
- 17. A method for producing a magnetic recording medium according to claim 16, wherein at least one non-magnetic target is a material predominantly comprising Cr, and the target employed initially for forming a magnetic film is a non-magnetic target and is formed of a material predominantly comprising Cr.
- 18. A method for producing a magnetic recording medium according to claim 16 or 17, wherein a target employed finally for forming a magnetic film is a magnetic target.
- 19. A method for producing a magnetic recording medium according to claim 16 or 17, wherein the method includes forming the magnetic film on the disk through repeated sputtering by use of a magnetic target and rotating the pallet with a non-magnetic target three or more times each.
- 20. A method for producing a magnetic recording medium comprising (1) a non-magnetic substrate, (2) a non-magnetic undercoat film, (3) a magnetic film, and (4) a protective film,
wherein the method uses sputtering and involves a plurality of targets, at least two targets of which are formed of different materials and at least one target of which comprises Cr as a primary component; and with a target employed initially for forming the non-magnetic undercoat film being a material comprising Cr as a primary component, said method comprising
holding the non-magnetic substrate in a rotatable pallet and setting the pallet at a position so that the non-magnetic substrate is sequentially opposite the targets during rotation of the pallet; and carrying out sputtering repeatedly by sequential use of the targets while rotating the pallet to form on the non-magnetic substrate a non-magnetic undercoat film in which the materials of the targets are alloyed.
- 21. A method for producing a magnetic recording medium according to claim 20, wherein a target employed finally for forming a non-magnetic undercoat film is a material comprising Cr as a primary component.
- 22. A method for producing a magnetic recording medium comprising a disk formed of (1) a non-magnetic substrate coated with (2) a non-magnetic undercoat film, and on the disk, (3) a magnetic film and (4) a protective film,
wherein the method uses sputtering and involves a plurality of targets, at least two targets of which are formed of different materials and at least one target of which comprises Co as a primary component, and wherein a target employed initially for forming the magnetic film is formed of a material comprising Co as a primary component, said method comprising
holding the disk in a rotatable pallet and setting the pallet at a position so that the disk is sequentially opposite the targets during rotation of the pallet; and carrying out sputtering repeatedly by use of the targets sequentially while rotating the pallet to form a magnetic film on the disk in which the materials of the targets are alloyed in the film.
- 23. A method for producing a magnetic recording medium according to claim 22, wherein at least one target is a material comprising Cr as a primary component, and the target employed initially for forming the magnetic film is a target of a material comprising Cr as a primary component.
