Claims
- 1. A receiver assembly for releasably mounting a head/arm assembly to a moveable arm of a disc drive, the head/arm assembly having a rigid arm having first and second surfaces and a head fixedly attached to the rigid arm, the receiver assembly comprising, in combination:
- a base member adapted to be fixedly mounted to the moveable arm of the disc drive, the base member having a receiving surface for receiving at least a portion of the rigid arm of the head/arm assembly, the portion of the rigid arm being laterally movable on the receiving surface and movable normal to the receiving surface;
- clamp means carried by the base member for releasably biasing the rigid arm against the receiving surface;
- first and second positioning means carried on the base member for defining a predetermined position on the base member for the head/arm assembly, the first and second positioning means being arranged to respectively bear against the first and second surfaces of the rigid arm to prevent lateral movement of the rigid arm on the receiving surface; and
- bias means for releasably biasing the rigid arm laterally against the first and second positioning means.
- 2. The receiver assembly according to claim 1 wherein the bias means comprises manually operable lever means adapted to engage a third surface of the rigid arm, pivot means mounting the lever means to the base member, and spring means providing a constant bias force on the lever means to urge the lever means against the third surface of the rigid arm so that the rigid arm bears against the first and second positioning means, the lever means being rotatable on the axis of the pivot means to disengage the lever means from the third surface of the rigid arm.
- 3. The receiver assembly according to claim 2 wherein the first and second positioning means comprises first and second pins, wherein the first surface of the rigid arm is arranged to bear against the first pin and the second surface of the rigid arm is arranged to bear against the second pin.
- 4. The receiver assembly according to claim 1 wherein the first and second positioning means comprises a first pin and a second pin respectively, and wherein the first surface of the rigid arm bears against the first pin and the second surface of the rigid arm bears against the second pin.
- 5. The receiver assembly according to claim 1 wherein the head/arm assembly further includes flexible support means mounted to the rigid arm and supporting the head, the flexible support means normally biasing the head to an operating position, the head/arm assembly further including lock means for selectively restraining the flexible support means from biasing the head to the operating position.
- 6. The receiver assembly according to claim 5 wherein the lock means includes a blade member supported by the rigid arm and arranged to move between a first blade position wherein the blade member engages the flexible support means to restrain the head from being urged toward a disc surface and a second blade position wherein the blade member is free of the flexible support means, and actuator means for moving the blade member between the first and second positions.
- 7. The receiver assembly according to claim 6 wherein the lock means further includes a slot in the rigid arm, the blade member including means slidably supporting the blade member to the slot, and means attached to the actuator means, for slidably moving the blade member between the first and second positions.
- 8. The receiver assembly according to claim 1 wherein the clamp means comprises clamp operator means arranged to engage the rigid arm, second bias means for biasing the clamp operator means against the rigid arm, and a cap mounted to the base member for supporting the second bias means.
- 9. The receiver assembly according to claim 8 wherein the clamp means further includes a flexible mount for positioning the clamp operator means adjacent the rigid arm.
- 10. An apparatus for use in a disc drive having a moveable arm, the apparatus comprising:
- a base member fixedly mounted to the moveable arm; the base member having a receiving surface;
- a removable head/arm assembly comprising a rigid arm, a flexible support fastened to the rigid arm, and a transducing head fastened to the flexible support;
- receiving means positioned on the base member for supporting the rigid arm on the receiving surface so that the flexible support and transducing head are free of the base member;
- first and second positioning means positioned on the base member adjacent the receiving means;
- releasable bias means supported by the base member for providing a predetermined bias force laterally relative to the receiving surface against the rigid arm supported by the receiving means so that the rigid arm bears against the first and second positioning means and the rigid arm is prevented from lateral movement on the receiving means; and
- clamp means supported by the base member for releasably clamping and biasing the rigid arm against the receiving means.
- 11. Apparatus according to claim 10 wherein the positioning means comprises first and second pins.
- 12. The apparatus according to claim 10 wherein the clamp means comprises clamp operator means arranged to engage the rigid arm, second bias means for biasing the clamp operator means against the rigid arm, and a cap mounted to the base member for supporting the second bias means.
- 13. The apparatus according to claim 12 wherein the clamp means further includes a flexible mount for positioning the clamp operator means adjacent the rigid arm.
- 14. The apparatus according to claim 10 wherein the flexible support biases the head to an operating position, the head/arm assembly further including lock means for selectively restraining the flexible support from biasing the head to the operating position.
- 15. The apparatus according to claim 14 wherein the lock means includes a blade member supported by the rigid arm and arranged to move between a first blade position wherein the blade member engages the flexible support to restrain the head from being biased to the operating position and a second blade position wherein the blade member is free of the flexible support, and actuator means for moving the blade member between the first and second positions.
