Claims
- 1. A one piece body, formed over a predetermined mandrel and removed therefrom, for use as a mass filter in a mass spectrometer, comprising a unitary metallic shell of deposited metal containing at least one insulator embedded therein, said shell being unbacked over a major portion of its surface and extending in a direction parallel to a common axis to define an axially-extending cavity, said shell having an inner electric field determining surface conforming precisely to the outer surface of the predetermined mandrel, said shell of deposited metal having at least one insulator embedded in it and bonded to it with a part of the surface of each insulator contiguous with the electric field determining surface of said metallic shell, and having apertures extending through predetermined portion of the metal of said shell overlying said insulator to expose said insulator to define sectors of said metallic shell that are insulated from each other and that serve as filter electrodes.
- 2. The structure of claim 1 wherein said metallic shell defines an axially-extending cavity of constant cross section.
- 3. The structure of claim 2 wherein said metallic shell further comprises:
- a. at least two filter electrodes extending in a direction parallel to the common axis;
- b. separate insulators disposed between successive filter electrodes around the axially-extending cavity.
- 4. The structure of claim 2 wherein said metallic shell further comprises:
- a. at least two filter electrodes extending in a direction parallel to the common axis;
- b. at least one separate insulator bonded to each axially-extending edge of each filter electrode; and
- c. for each filter electrode, at least one shield electrode bonded to at least two of said insulators which are attached to adjacent electrodes around the axially-extending cavity, said shield electrodes axially co-extensive, approximately, with said filter electrodes.
- 5. The structure of claim 1 wherein said insulators are disposed in at least one predetermined plane perpendicular to the common axis.
- 6. The structure of claim 1 wherein said insulators extend axially approximately the length of filter the electrodes.
- 7. The mass filter of claim 1 wherein the sectors of said metallic shell that serve as electrodes have axially-extending central portions arched inwardly toward a common axis and outwardly merging into axially-extending edge portions flaired radially away from the common axis.
- 8. The mass filter of claim 7 wherein said central portions have a circular cross section in a plane perpendicular to the common axis.
- 9. The mass filter of claim 7 wherein said central portions have an hyperbolic cross section in a plane perpendicular to the common axis.
- 10. The mass filter of claim 1 wherein the thickness of said metallic shell is at least 0.010 inches.
- 11. The mass filter of claim 1 wherein said metallic shell is tungsten.
- 12. The mass filter of claim 1 wherein said insulators have a coefficient of thermal expansion similar to that of said metallic shell.
- 13. The mass filter of claim 1 wherein said insulator is composed of zirconium silicate.
- 14. The mass filter of claim 1 wherein the metal of said metallic shell is molybdenum.
- 15. A one piece body for use as a mass filter in a mass spectrometer, comprising a unitary metallic shell of deposited metal containing at least one insulator embedded therein, said shell being unbacked over a major portion of its surface and extending in a direction parallel to a common axis to define an axially-extending cavity, said shell having an electric field determining surface conforming precisely to the surface of a predetermined mandrel on which the metal of the shell had been deposited and the mandrel removed therefrom, said shell of deposited metal having at least one insulator embedded in it and bonded to it with a part of the surface of each insulator contiguous with the electric field determining surface of said metallic shell and having apertures extending through predetermined portions of the metal of said shell overlying said insulator to expose said insulator to define sectors of said metallic shell that are insulated from each other and that serve as filter electrodes.
- 16. A one piece body for use as a mass filter in a mass spectrometer, comprising a unitary structurally self-supporting shell of deposited metal, containing at least one insulator embedded therein formed by depositing metal on a predetermined male mandrel having the insulator positioned thereon and removing the mandrel therefrom, said shell being unbacked over a major portion of its surface and extending in a direction parallel to a common axis to define and enclose an axially extending female cavity passing through said shell, said shell having an electric field determining surface which bounds the cavity and which conforms in shape and surface smoothness to the surface of the predetermined male mandrel, said shell of deposited metal overlying at least said one insulator, said insulator being axially extending and being embedded in and bonded to the metal deposited thereon, a part of the surface of each insulator being contiguous with the electric field determining surface of said shell, said shell of deposited metal having apertures extending through predetermined portions of said shell overlying said insulator to expose said insulator to define sectors of said metallic shell that are insulated from each other and that serve as filter electrodes of the mass filter.
