Claims
- 1. An isolated nucleic acid molecule comprising SEQ ID NO: 1, said nucleic acid molecule comprising a sequence encoding a Montastrea cavernosa fluorescent protein (mcFP) about 225 amino acids in length, said encoded mcFP comprising a polypeptide having fluorescent properties.
- 2. The nucleic acid molecule of claim 1, which is DNA.
- 3. The DNA molecule of claim 2, which is a cDNA comprising a sequence approximately 0.86 kilobase pairs in length that encodes said mcFP.
- 4. The DNA molecule of claim 2, which is a gene comprising introns and exons, the exons of said gene specifically hybridizing with the nucleic acid of SEQ ID NO: 1, and said exons encoding said mcFP.
- 5. The nucleic acid molecule of claim 1, which is RNA.
- 6. A vector comprising the nucleic acid molecule of claim 1.
- 7. A host cell comprising the vector of claim 6.
- 8. The nucleic acid molecule of claim 1, wherein said nucleic acid encodes a mcFP comprising an amino acid sequence selected from the group consisting of an amino acid sequence encoded by SEQ ID NO: 2 and natural allelic variants of said nucleic acid.
- 9. The nucleic acid molecule of claim 8, which comprises SEQ ID NO: 1.
- 10. An isolated nucleic acid molecule comprising a sequence selected from the group consisting of:
a) SEQ ID NO: 1; b) a sequence which specifically hybridizes with SEQ ID NO: 1; c) a sequence encoding a polypeptide of SEQ ID NO: 2; and d) a nucleic acid sequence encoding a chromophore domain of mcFP.
- 11. An oligonucleotide between about 10 and about 200 nucleotides in length, which specifically hybridizes with a nucleotide sequence encoding amino acids of SEQ ID NO: 2.
- 12. An oligonucleotide between about 10 and about 200 nucleotides in length, which specifically hybridizes with a sequence in the nucleic acid molecule of claim 1, said sequence encoding chromaphore domain of said mcFP.
- 13. An isolated mcFP, about 225 amino acids in length, said encoded protein comprising a chromophore domain sequence.
- 14. An antibody immunologically specific for the isolated protein of claim 13.
- 15. An antibody as claimed in claim 14, said antibody being monoclonal.
- 16. An antibody as claimed in claim 14, said antibody being polyclonal.
- 17. A method of identifying a target nucleic acid molecule in a test sample using a nucleic acid probe having the sequence shown in SEQ ID NO: 1, the method comprising contacting the probe and the test sample under hybridizing conditions and observing whether hybridization takes place.
- 18. A method according to claim 17 wherein the probe is used to identify a nucleic acid selected from the group consisting of a mcFP nucleic acid sequence and a mutant allele thereof.
- 19. A kit comprising a pair of oligonucleotide primers having sequences corresponding to a portion of a nucleic acid sequence set out in SEQ ID NO: 1 for use in amplifying a nucleic acid selected from the group consisting of a mcFP nucleic acid sequence and a mutant allele thereof.
- 20. A chimeric animal comprising an exogenous mcFP allele.
- 21. A vector comprising a hybrid nucleic acid molecule, wherein said vector comprises at least one cloning site operably linked to a first nucleic acid sequence molecule of claim 10 and wherein said cloning site provides an insertion site for a second nucleic acid molecule.
- 22. A host cell comprising the vector of claim 21.
- 23. An isolated mcFP fusion protein, wherein said fusion protein is encoded by a vector of claim 21.
