Claims
- 1. In a copier including framework and a platen on which respective documents of different thickness may be placed for copying purposes, and means for covering said platen, self-positioning apparatus comprising:
- a. linkage means for movably supporting said covering means, said linkage means adapted to permit movement of said covering means between a predetermined position adjacent to said platen for holding respective documents of minimal thickness in contact with said platen and respective positions away from said platen for holding respective documents of greater thickness in contact with said platen;
- b. resilient means for urging said covering means away from said platen;
- c. means for maintaining said covering means in said predetermined and respective positions; and
- d. said linkage means including at least four links, one of said links including a portion of said covering means, another of said links including a portion of said framework, two other of said links being movable links, said maintaining means including spring means, said maintaining means including roller means extending from one of said movable links and into contact with said spring means, and said roller means and spring means coacting to resist movement of said covering means.
- 2. In a copier including framework and a platen on which respective documents of different thickness may be placed for copying purposes, and means for covering said platen, self-positioning apparatus comprising:
- a. linkage means for movably supporting said covering means, said linkage means adapted to permit movement of said covering means between a predetermined position adjacent to said platen for holding respective documents of minimal thickness in contact with said platen and respective positions away from said platen for holding respective documents of greater thickness in contact with said platen;
- b. resilient means for urging said covering means away from said platen;
- c. means for maintaining said covering means in said predetermined and respective positions; and
- d. said resilient means including at least one torsion rod having one end thereof attached to said linkage means and the other end thereof attached to said framework.
- 3. In a copier including framework and a platen on which respective documents of different thickness may be placed for copying purposes, and means for covering said platen, self-positioning apparatus comprising:
- a. linkage means for movably supporting said covering means, said linkage means adapted to permit movement of said covering means between a predetermined position adjacent to said platen for holding respective documents of minimal thickness in contact with said platen and respective positions away from said platen for holding respective documents of minimal thickness in contact with said platen and respective positions away from said platen for holding respective documents of greater thickness in contact with said platen;
- b. resilient means for urging said covering means away from said platen;
- c. means for maintaining said covering means in said predetermined and respective positions; and
- d. said resilient means including adjustable spring means connected to said linkage means.
- 4. In a copier including framework and a platen on which respective documents of different thickness may be placed for copying purposes, and means for covering said platen, self-positioning apparatus comprising:
- a. linkage means for movably supporting said covering means, said linkage means adapted to permit movement of said covering means between a predetermined position adjacent to said platen for holding respective documents of minimal thickness in contact with said platen and respective positions away from said platen for holding respective documents of greater thickness in contact with said platen;
- b. resilient means for urging said covering means away from said platen;
- c. means for maintaining said covering means in said predetermined and respective positions; and
- d. said resilient means including tension spring means and torsion bar means respectively biased to elevate said covering means when said covering means is disposed in said predetermined position.
- 5. In a copier including framework and a platen on which respective documents of different thickness may be placed for copying purposes, and means for covering said platen, self-positioning apparatus comprising:
- a. linkage means for movably supporting said covering means, said linkage means adapted to permit movement of said covering means between a predetermined position adjacent to said platen for holding respective documents of minimal thickness in contact with said platen and respective positions away from said platen for holding respective documents of greater thickness in contact with said platen;
- b. resilient means for urging said covering means away from said platen;
- c. means for maintaining said covering means in said predetermined and respective positions; and
- d. said maintaining means including manually releasable means for latching said covering means in said predetermined position.
- 6. Self-leveling apparatus for means for covering the platen of an electrostatic copying machine, said apparatus comprising:
- a. means for supporting said covering means;
- b. means for releasably latching said covering means at a predetermined level with respect to said platen to permit said covering means to cover respective documents of minimal thickness;
- c. means for resiliently urging said covering means to respective levels above said predetermined level to permit said covering means to cover respective documents of greater thickness, said resilient means including torsion bar means biased when said covering means is disposed in said predetermined position to urge said covering means away from said platen;
- d. means for maintaining said covering means at said respective levels to which said covering means is moved; and
- e. said maintaining means including spring means connected to said supporting means and adapted to resist movement of said covering means to said respective levels.
- 7. Self-leveling apparatus for means for covering the platen of an electrostatic copying machine, said apparatus comprising:
- a. means for supporting said covering means;
- b. means for releasably latching said covering means at a predetermined level with respect to said platen to permit said covering means to cover respective documents of minimal thickness;
- c. means for resiliently urging said covering means to respective levels above said predetermined level to permit said covering means to cover respective documents of greater thickness, said resilient means including torsion bar means biased when said covering means is disposed in said predetermined position to urge said covering means away from said platen;
- d. means for maintaining said covering means at said respective levels to which said covering means is moved; and
- e. said supporting means including linkage means for hingedly connecting said covering means to said copying machine.
- 8. Self-leveling apparatus for means for covering the platen of an electrostatic copying machine, said apparatus comprising:
- a. means for supporting said covering means;
- b. means for releasably latching said covering means at a predetermined level with respect to said platen to permit said covering means to cover respective documents of minimal thickness;
- c. means for resiliently urging said covering means to respective levels above said predetermined level to permit said covering means to cover respective documents of greater thickness, said resilient means including torsion bar means biased when said covering means is disposed in said predetermined position to urge said covering means away from said platen;
- d. means for maintaining said covering means at said respective levels to which said covering means is moved; and
- e. said torsion bar means including a torsion rod, and said tension spring means including a coil spring and means for adjusting the spring tension of said coil spring.
- 9. In a copier including a means for feeding documents to a platen for copying purpose, self-leveling apparatus for the document feeding means, said apparatus comprising:
- a. means for movably supporting said document feeding means;
- b. resilient means biased for moving said document feeding means from a predetermined document feeding level to respective non-document feeding levels, said resilient means including torsion bar means;
- c. means for maintaining said document feeder at the respective levels to which said document feeder is moved; and
- d. said supporting means including linkage means for hingedly connecting said document feeding means to said copier, said resilient means including spring means connected to said supporting means, said maintaining means including spring means connected to said supporting means and adapted to resist movement of said document feeder.
