Claims
- 1. An apparatus for establishing retardation induced by a waveplate that exhibits birefringence, comprising:a source of polarized light arranged such that the light propagates along a path from the source; a light detector located in the path substantially opposite the source; a photoelastic modulator having an oscillating part located in the path between the source and detector such that the light propagates through the oscillating part of the photoelastic modulator; a waveplate rotatably mounted in the path so that the light propagating through the oscillating part of the photoelastic modulator propagates through the waveplate to be incident on the light detector, wherein the retardation of the waveplate correlates to the intensity of the light that is incident on the detector, and whereby the detector produces an output signal indicative of the intensity; and means for mounting the waveplate in the optical path for selectively tilting the waveplate thereby to vary the value of the established waveplate.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the waveplate is a multiple order waveplate.
- 3. A method of operating an optical system for measuring retardation induced by a waveplate, comprising the steps of:rotatably mounting a selected waveplate in a path of polarized light that emanates from a source; locating a photoelastic modulator in the path between the source and the waveplate such that the light propagates through the photoelastic modulator and through the waveplate; oscillating the photoelastic modulator to induce retardation into the light passing through it; and processing the light that passes through the waveplate to determine the difference between the retardation induced by the waveplate and that induced by the photoelastic modulator, wherein processing includes determining the thickness of the waveplate.
- 4. The method of claim 3 including the step of selecting the waveplate to be a multiple order waveplate.
- 5. A method of operating an optical system for measuring retardation induced by a selected waveplate, comprising the steps of:rotatably mounting a selected waveplate in a path of polarized light that emanates from a source that provides two different wavelengths of light; locating a photoelastic modulator in the path between the source and the waveplate such that the light propagates through the photoelastic modulator and through the waveplate; controlling the photoelastic modulator to impart oscillating birefringence therein to induce retardation into the light passing through it; and processing the light that passes through the waveplate to determine the difference between the retardation induced by the waveplate and that induced by the photoelastic modulator.
- 6. The method of claim 5 including the step of selecting the waveplate to be a multiple order waveplate.
