Claims
- 1. A method of delivering a medical fluid to a patient comprising:
providing a multipatient supply of the fluid in a bulk container with access to the fluid at a connecting site, providing a delivery container for receiving a unipatient supply of the fluid from the bulk container at the connecting site, establishing a flow of the unipatient fluid supply into the delivery container at the connecting site to fill the delivery container, disconnecting the delivery container irreversibly from the connecting site, and administering the unipatient fluid supply to an infusion site in the patient after disconnecting.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the fluid flow is initiated by a method selected from the group consisting of gravity, pumping, mechanical pressure, hydraulic pressure, vacuum and combinations thereof.
- 3. The method of claim 1 wherein the delivery container has at least one flexible wall that contacts a pressurizeable chamber and delivers the unipatient fluid supply to the patient by pressurizing the chamber.
- 4. The method of claim 3 wherein the chamber is pressurized through action of a pressure selected from the group consisting of hydraulic, mechanical, pneumatic and combinations thereof.
- 5. The method of claim 1 wherein the unipatient fluid supply is customized for the patient.
- 6. The method of claim 5 further comprising calculating the customized dose using patient and/or procedure specific data.
- 7. The method of claim 1 wherein the steps of providing, establishing, disconnecting, and administering are performed substantially by automation.
- 8. The method of claim 1 further comprising determining the unipatient fluid supply by an algorithm using patient and/or procedure specific data.
- 9. The method of claim 1 further comprising providing a device to detect extravasation of the fluid at the infusion site.
- 10. The method of claim 1 further comprising tracking the volume of fluid removed from the bulk container.
- 11. The method of claim 1 further comprising
providing a plurality of delivery containers for each serially receiving unipatient supplies of the fluid from the bulk container at the connecting site, and tracking the number of delivery containers that receive a unipatient supply of the fluid.
- 12. A method of delivering a medical fluid to a patient comprising
providing a system comprising
a multipatient supply of the fluid in a bulk container with access to the fluid at a connecting site, and a delivery container operatively connected to the connecting site to receive a unipatient supply of the fluid from the bulk container and thereafter disconnect irreversibly from the connecting site, establishing a fluid flow to the delivery container at the connecting site to fill the delivery container, disconnecting the delivery container irreversibly from the connecting site, and administering the unipatient fluid supply to an infusion site in the patient after disconnecting.
- 13. The method of claim 12 wherein the delivery container is a syringe comprising
a barrel for containing the unipatient supply of the fluid, a filling port comprising a tube and a check valve, a discharge port, and a piston for discharging the fluid through the discharge port, wherein the syringe is filled by sealing the discharge port to prevent fluid release, retracting the piston to allow fluid into the barrel and then sealing the filling port with the check valve to prevent further fluid in the barrel.
- 14. A method for providing a customized supply of a medical fluid to a patient comprising
determining the customized supply, providing a bulk container for containing a multipatient supply of the fluid at a connecting site, providing a delivery container for receiving the customized supply from the bulk container at the connecting site, establishing a fluid flow from the bulk container to the delivery container at the connecting site to provide the customized supply to the delivery container, disconnecting the delivery container irreversibly from the connecting, and administering the customized supply to an infusion site in the patient after disconnecting.
- 15. The method of claim 14 wherein the delivery container is selected from the group consisting of a bag and a syringe.
- 16. The method of claim 14 wherein the delivery container is a bag contacting a pressurizeable chamber and the customized supply is delivered by providing a pressure to the chamber.
- 17. The method of claim 14 wherein the steps of providing, establishing, disconnecting, and administering are performed substantially by automation.
- 18. The method of claim 14 wherein the step of determining is performed by an algorithm using patient or procedure specific data.
- 19. The method of claim 14 wherein the connecting site is maintained sterile by flowing filtered air over the connecting site through a compartment adjacent the connecting site.
