Claims
- 1. A medical item monitoring system to indicate compliance of a medical item with corresponding prescribed conditions comprising:
a medical item, wherein utilization of said medical item is subject to compliance with associated prescribed conditions; and a monitoring device secured to said medical item to measure and indicate compliance of said medical item with said prescribed conditions, wherein said monitoring device includes:
at least one sensor each to measure a corresponding medical item condition; an indicator to indicate at least one of a measured medical item condition and a prescribed condition; and a processor to receive medical item conditions measured by said at least one sensor and to determine compliance with said prescribed conditions and control said indicator to indicate a status of utilization for said medical item with respect to said prescribed conditions.
- 2. The monitoring system of claim 1, wherein said prescribed conditions include at least one of: a predetermined maximum temperature for said medical item, a heating time interval for said medical item, re-warming of said medical item, a time interval for utilization of said medical item after thermal treatment and an expiration date for utilization of said medical item.
- 3. The monitoring system of claim 1, wherein said indicator includes a display to display at least one of said measured medical item condition, said prescribed condition and said utilization status.
- 4. The monitoring system of claim 1, wherein said indicator includes at least one visual indicator each associated with at least one of a corresponding medical item condition and said prescribed condition, and wherein said processor actuates said corresponding visual indicators in response to said compliance determination to indicate a status of utilization for said medical item with respect to said prescribed conditions.
- 5. The monitoring system of claim 1, wherein said processor records said measured medical item conditions.
- 6. The monitoring system of claim 5, wherein said processor further records information associated with a patient to receive said medical item.
- 7. The monitoring system of claim 5 further including:
an external device to receive said recorded information, wherein said monitoring device further includes an interface to communicate with said external device to transfer said recorded information.
- 8. The monitoring system of claim 7, wherein said external device is coupled to a storage unit to store said transferred information.
- 9. The monitoring system of claim 8, wherein said external device includes an input device to enable entry of information and said entered information is transferred to at least one of said processor and said storage unit.
- 10. The monitoring system of claim 9, wherein said entered information includes item location information.
- 11. The monitoring system of claim 1, wherein said monitoring device further includes:
a global positioning system communication device to ascertain at least one of time and medical item location information from a global positioning system for storage by said processor.
- 12. The monitoring system of claim 1, wherein said monitoring device is secured to said medical item at medical item manufacture and monitors and indicates medical item conditions through at least one of utilization and disposal of said medical item.
- 13. The monitoring system of claim 1, wherein said indicator includes electrochromic ink cells.
- 14. The monitoring system of claim 13, wherein said monitoring device further includes:
at least one actuator to enable manual activation of a corresponding ink cell by a user to indicate an associated medical item condition.
- 15. A medical item monitoring system to indicate compliance of a medical item with corresponding prescribed conditions comprising:
a medical item including a unique identifier, wherein utilization of said medical item is subject to compliance with associated prescribed conditions; and a thermal treatment system to thermally treat said medical item and measure said medical item conditions, wherein said thermal treatment system includes:
a thermal treatment unit to thermally treat said medical item; at least one sensor each to measure a corresponding medical item condition; an interface to identify said medical item in accordance with said identifier; and a controller in communication with an external device to receive medical item conditions measured by said at least one sensor and to store said measured conditions in said external device in association with said identifier, wherein said stored information is accessible by users and indicates a status of utilization for said medical item with respect to said prescribed conditions.
- 16. The monitoring system of claim 15, wherein said prescribed conditions include at least one of: a predetermined maximum temperature for said medical item, a heating time interval for said medical item, re-warming of said medical item, a time interval for utilization of said medical item after thermal treatment and an expiration date for said medical item.
- 17. The monitoring system of claim 15, wherein said external device includes a processing system with a storage unit to store said measured conditions and said processing system examines said stored information to determine and indicate at least one of said measured medical item condition, said prescribed condition and said utilization status.
- 18. The monitoring system of claim 15, wherein said external device further records information associated with a patient to receive said medical item.
- 19. The monitoring system of claim 15, wherein said identifier includes a bar code and said interface includes a bar code scanner.
- 20. The monitoring system of claim 15, wherein said identifier includes a transponder unit to transmit an identification code and said interface includes a receiver unit to receive said transmitted identification code.
- 21. A method of monitoring a medical item to indicate compliance of said medical item with corresponding prescribed conditions, wherein utilization of said medical item is subject to compliance with said corresponding prescribed conditions, said method comprising:
(a) measuring medical item conditions via at least one corresponding sensor; (b) evaluating said measured medical item conditions received from said at least one sensor and determining compliance with said prescribed conditions via a processor; and (c) controlling an indicator to indicate a status of utilization for said medical item with respect to said prescribed conditions.
- 22. The method of claim 21, wherein said prescribed conditions include at least one of: a predetermined maximum temperature for said medical item, a heating time interval for said medical item, re-warming of said medical item, a time interval for utilization of said medical item after thermal treatment and an expiration date for utilization of said medical item.
- 23. The method of claim 21, wherein said indicator includes a display and step (c) further includes:
(c.1) displaying at least one of said measured medical item condition, said prescribed condition and said utilization status.
- 24. The method of claim 21, wherein said indicator includes at least one visual indicator each associated with at least one of a corresponding medical item condition and said prescribed condition, and step (c) further includes:
(c.1) actuating said corresponding visual indicators in response to said compliance determination to indicate a status of utilization for said medical item with respect to said prescribed conditions.
- 25. The method of claim 21, wherein step (b) further includes:
(b.1) recording said measured medical item conditions.
- 26. The method of claim 25, wherein step (b) further includes:
(b.2) recording information associated with a patient to receive said medical item.
- 27. The method of claim 25, wherein step (b) further includes:
(b.2) transferring said recorded information to an external device via an interface in communication with said external device.
- 28. The method of claim 27, wherein step (b) further includes:
(b.3) storing said transferred information in a storage unit coupled to said external device.
- 29. The monitoring system of claim 28, wherein said external device includes an input device to enable entry of information and step (b.3) further includes:
(b.3.1) transferring said entered information to at least one of said processor and said storage unit.
- 30. The method of claim 29, wherein said entered information includes item location information.
- 31. The method of claim 21, wherein step (b) further includes:
(b.1) ascertaining at least one of time and medical item location information from a global positioning system for storage by said processor.
- 32. The method of claim 21, wherein steps (a), (b) and (c) are performed from medical item manufacture through at least one of utilization and disposal of said medical item.
- 33. The method of claim 21, wherein step (c) further includes:
(c.1) controlling electrochromic ink cells to indicate a status of utilization for said medical item with respect to said prescribed conditions.
- 34. The method of claim 33, wherein step (c) further includes:
(c.2) enabling manual activation of a corresponding ink cell by a user to indicate an associated medical item condition.
- 35. A method of monitoring a medical item to indicate compliance of a medical item with corresponding prescribed conditions, wherein said medical item includes a unique identifier and utilization of said medical item is subject to compliance with said corresponding prescribed conditions, said method comprising:
(a) thermally treating said medical item in a thermal treatment system and measuring medical item conditions via at least one corresponding sensor; (b) identifying said medical item in accordance with said identifier; and (c) storing said measured conditions in an external device in association with said identifier, wherein said stored information is accessible by users and indicates a status of utilization for said medical item with respect to said prescribed conditions.
- 36. The method of claim 35, wherein said prescribed conditions include at least one of: a predetermined maximum temperature for said medical item, a heating time interval for said medical item, re-warming of said medical item, a time interval for utilization of said medical item after thermal treatment and an expiration date for said medical item.
- 37. The method of claim 35, wherein said external device includes a processing system with a storage unit to store said measured conditions, and said method further includes:
(d) examining said stored information, via said processing system, to determine and indicate at least one of said measured medical item condition, said prescribed condition and said utilization status.
- 38. The method of claim 35, wherein step (c) further includes:
(c.1) recording in said external device information associated with a patient to receive said medical item.
- 39. The method of claim 35, wherein said identifier includes a bar code and step (b) further includes:
(b.1) identifying said medical item via a bar code scanner to ascertain said bar code.
- 40. The method of claim 35, wherein said identifier includes a transponder unit to transmit an identification code and step (b) further includes:
(b.1) identifying said medical item via a receiver unit to receive said transmitted identification code.
- 41. A method of monitoring a medical item to indicate compliance of said medical item with corresponding prescribed conditions, wherein utilization of said medical item is subject to compliance with said corresponding prescribed conditions, said method comprising:
(a) measuring medical item conditions; (b) evaluating said measured medical item conditions and determining compliance with said prescribed conditions; and (c) indicating a status of utilization for said medical item with respect to said prescribed conditions; wherein steps (a), (b) and (c) are performed from medical item manufacture through at least one of utilization and disposal of said medical item.
- 42. The method of claim 41, wherein said prescribed conditions include at least one of: a predetermined maximum temperature for said medical item, a heating time interval for said medical item, re-warming of said medical item, a time interval for utilization of said medical item after thermal treatment and an expiration date for utilization of said medical item.
- 43. The method of claim 41, wherein step (b) further includes:
(b.1) recording said measured medical item conditions.
- 44. The method of claim 43, wherein step (b) further includes:
(b.2) recording information associated with a patient to receive said medical item.
