Claims
- 1. A layered sheet construction comprising:
a. at least one gas permeable, liquid water impermeable layer; and b. a gas delivery layer proximate the layer of part a. which gas delivery layer is formed of a corrugated sheet, the corrugations forming flow channels through which gas can be conveyed to the layer of part a.
- 2. The layered sheet construction of claim 1 in which the layer of part a. is a porous membrane having an average pore size of less than 0.5 micrometers.
- 3. The layered sheet construction of claim 1 further comprising a mass of microorganisms proximate the layer of part a.
- 4. The layered sheet construction of claim 1 further comprising a microbial support layer adjacent the gas permeable, liquid water impermeable layer on the side opposite the gas delivery layer.
- 5. A layered sheet construction comprising:
a. a gas permeable, liquid water impermeable layer having a surface energy less than about 20 dynes/cm; and b. a gas delivery layer proximate the layer of part a. which gas delivery layer has means through which gas can be conveyed to the layer of part a.
- 6. The layered sheet construction of claim 5 of which the surface energy of the gas permeable, water impermeable layer is less than about 17 dynes/cm.
- 7. The layered sheet construction of claim 5 of which the part of the gas permeable, liquid water impermeable layer nearest the outer surface comprises, at least in part, fluorine-containing chemical groups.
- 8. The layered sheet construction of claim 7 in which the part of the gas permeable, liquid water impermeable layer nearest the outer surface is characterized by containing or having on the surface thereof a fluorine-containing material selected from the group consisting of:
a. polymers onto which fluorine-containing groups are grafted; and b. macromolecular additives comprising fluorinated chemical moieties.
- 9. The layered sheet construction of claim 5 in which the layer of part a. is a porous membrane having an average pore size of less than 0.5 micrometers.
- 10. The layered sheet construction of claim 5 in which the gas delivery layer comprises a plurality of walls forming flow channels through which gas can be conveyed to the layer of part a.
- 11. The layered sheet construction of claim 5 further comprising a mass of microorganisms proximate the layer of part a.
- 12. The layered sheet construction of claim 5 further comprising a microbial support layer adjacent the gas permeable, liquid water impermeable layer of part a. on the side opposite the gas delivery layer.
- 13. A layered sheet construction comprising:
a. a gas permeable, liquid water impermeable layer characterized by containing or having on the surface thereof a fluorine-containing material selected from the group consisting of:
i) polymers onto which fluorine-containing groups are grafted; and ii). macromolecular additives comprising fluorinated chemical moieties; and b. a gas delivery layer proximate the layer of part a. which gas delivery layer has means through which gas can be conveyed to the layer of part a.
- 14. The layered sheet construction of claim 13 in which the gas delivery layer comprises a plurality of walls forming flow channels through which gas can be conveyed to the layer of part a.
- 15. The layered sheet construction of claim 13 in which the gas permeable, liquid water impermeable layer is a porous membrane having an average pore size of less than 0.5 micrometers.
- 16. The layered sheet construction of claim 13 further comprising a mass of microorganisms proximate the layer of part a.
- 17. The layered sheet construction of claim 13 further comprising a microbial support layer adjacent the gas permeable, liquid water impermeable layer of part a. on the side opposite the gas delivery layer.
- 18. The layered sheet construction of claim 13 of which the gas permeable, liquid water impermeable layer of part a. comprises a polymer selected from the group consisting of: polytetrafluoroethylene, vinyl polymers, polyamides, polyurethanes, polypropylene, polyethylene, polysulfones and poly(ethersulfones), and copolymers thereof.
- 19. An article useful in membrane aerated bioreactors comprising:
a. a gas permeable, liquid water impermeable porous membrane comprising hollow fibers, said membrane characterized by having at least one of the following:
i) a coating of a composition comprising a fluorochemical or fluoropolymer which is optionally curable; ii) a surface treated by ionizing radiation or plasma discharge in the presence of gaseous fluorinated species; iii) additives comprising fluorinated chemical moieties within the composition of the gas permeable, liquid water impermeable porous membrane; and iv) a fluoropolymer within the membrane pores; b. means for delivering a gas to the interior of the porous hollow fibers.
