Claims
- 1. An automated platesetting system, comprising:
- an imager for imaging plates;
- a command generator for generating command signals;
- a plate handler configured to store a plurality of plates, including plates having different characteristics;
- a positioning mechanism for automatically positioning a portion of the plurality of plates such that one of the plurality of plates having a required characteristic is placed in an access position in accordance with the command signals; and
- a transfer mechanism for automatically transferring the one plate from the access position to the imager, and for transferring another of the plurality of plates to the imager during the positioning of the portion of the plurality of plates by the positioning mechanism, in accordance with the command signals.
- 2. A system according to claim 1, wherein:
- the different characteristics are different plate sizes; and
- the required characteristic is a required plate size.
- 3. A system according to claim 1, wherein:
- the plates having different characteristics include first plates, each having a first characteristic, and second plates, each having a second characteristic different from the first characteristic:
- the plate handler includes a first plate holder configured to hold the first plates in a stack and a second plate holder configured to hold the second plates, including the one plate, in a stack; and
- the positioning mechanism moves the stack of first plates such that the one plate is in the access position.
- 4. A system according to claim 1, further comprising:
- a slip sheet remover configured to remove a slip sheet from the one plate.
- 5. A system according to claim 4, wherein:
- the slip sheet remover removes the slip sheet prior to the transfer mechanism transferring the one plate from the access position to the imager.
- 6. A system according to claim 1, further comprising:
- a reader for identifying the different characteristics of the plurality of plates stored in the plate handler.
- 7. The system of claim 1, wherein the positioning mechanism automatically positions the one plate in the access position without moving any of the plurality of plates stored in the plate handler along other than a single straight line.
- 8. The system of claim 1, wherein the transfer mechanism is movable to a position between other of the plurality of plates stored in the plate handler to transfer the one plate from the access position.
- 9. An apparatus for providing access to a plate of a particular type within a plurality of plates of different types, comprising:
- a command generator configured to generate command signals including a signal identifying a first type plate and a second type plate;
- a transfer mechanism for individually transferring plates in accordance with the command signals; and
- a positioning mechanism configured to position, during the transfer of the first type plate by the transfer mechanism, at least one of a plurality of plates such that the second type plate is accessible by the transfer mechanism in accordance with the command signals.
- 10. An apparatus according to claim 9, further comprising:
- a plurality of cassettes configured to store the plurality of plates;
- wherein the positioning mechanism is configured to position the at least one of the plurality of plates by positioning at least one of the plurality of cassettes.
- 11. An apparatus according to claim 9, wherein:
- the positioning mechanism is configured to move the at least one of the plurality of plates in a direction substantially perpendicular to a direction of movement of the first type plate by the transfer mechanism.
- 12. An apparatus according to claim 9, wherein:
- the signal generated by the command generator identifies the particular type of plate by indicating a second size of plate.
- 13. An apparatus according to claim 9, further comprising:
- a data transmitter configured to transmit data representing the particular type plate.
- 14. An apparatus according to claim 13, wherein the data transmitter is further configured to transmit data indicative of a quantity of the second type plate.
- 15. An apparatus according to claim 9, wherein the second type plate includes a slip sheet, and further comprising:
- a slip sheet detector configured to detect the presence of the slip sheet.
- 16. An apparatus according to claim 9, wherein the second type plate includes a slip sheet, and further comprising:
- a slip sheet remover configured to remove the slip sheet from the second type plate.
- 17. The apparatus of claim 9, wherein the positioning mechanism is configured to position the at least one of a plurality of plates such that the second type plate is accessible without moving any of the plurality of plates along other than a single straight line.
- 18. An apparatus for providing one of a plurality of plates to an imager, comprising:
- a plate handler configured to contain a plurality of plates, each plate in the plurality of plates having an associated characteristic;
- a command generator for generating command signals;
- a removal mechanism configured to move plates from the plate handler in accordance with the command signals; and
- a positioning mechanism configured to move, during movement of one of the plurality of plates by the removal mechanism, at least one other of the plurality of plates contained in the plate handler to provide access to another of the plurality of plates for movement by the removal mechanism in accordance with the command signals.
- 19. The apparatus of claim 18, wherein the associated characteristic is size and wherein the plurality of plates have a plurality of sizes.
- 20. The apparatus of claim 18, wherein the plate handler is configured to hold a plurality of cassettes, each cassette configured to contain a plurality of plates.
- 21. The apparatus of claim 18, wherein the positioning mechanism is configured to provide access to the another plate without moving any of the plurality of plates contained in the plate handler along other than a single straight line.
- 22. The apparatus of claim 18, wherein the removal mechanism is configured be movable to a position between plates contained in the plate handler to move the another plate from the plate handler.
- 23. A method of operating an automated platesetting system having a plate handler storing a plurality of plates and an imager, the plurality of plates including plates having different characteristics, comprising the steps of:
- issuing command signals including a signal informing the plate handler of a required one of the different characteristics;
- automatically positioning, in accordance with the command signals, a portion of the plurality of plates during movement of another plate to the imager such that one of the plurality of plates having the required characteristic is placed in an access position; and
- automatically moving, in accordance with the command signals, the one plate from the access position to the imager.
- 24. A method according to claim 23, wherein:
- the different characteristics are different plate sizes; and
- the required characteristic is a required plate size.
- 25. A method according to claim 23, wherein:
- the plates having different characteristics include first plates, each having a first characteristic, and second plates, each having a second characteristic different than the first characteristic;
- the first plates are stored in the plate handler as a first stack of plates;
- the second plates are stored in the plate handler as a second stack of plates;
- the first stack of plates is automatically positioned such that the one plate is placed in the access position; and
- the one plate is within the second stack of plates.
- 26. A method according to claim 23, further comprising the step of:
- imaging onto the one plate in the imager.
- 27. The method according to claim 23, further comprising the step of:
- removing a slip sheet from the one plate.
- 28. The method according to claim 27, wherein:
- the slip sheet is removed prior to moving the one plate from the access position to the imager.
- 29. The method according to claim 23, wherein the automated platesetting system further includes a processor and the processor informs the plate handler of the required characteristic, and further comprising the step of:
- informing the processor of an available quantity of those of the plurality of plates having the required characteristic.
- 30. The method according to claim 23, further comprising:
- reading information disposed within the plate handler to determine the different characteristics of the plurality of plates stored in the plate handler.
- 31. The method of claim 23, wherein the automatic positioning places the one plate in the access position without moving any of the plurality of plates within the plate handler along other than a single straight line.
- 32. A method for providing access to a particular type plate from within a plurality of different type plates by a transfer mechanism for moving the particular type plate to an imaging device, comprising the steps of:
- generating command signals including a signal identifying the particular type plate; and
- positioning at least one of the plurality of plates, during movement of another plate to the imaging device by the transfer mechanism, to provide access to the particular type plate by the transfer mechanism in accordance with the command signals.
- 33. A method according to claim 32, further comprising the steps of:
- storing the plurality of plates in a plurality of cassettes; and
- positioning at least one of the plurality of cassettes to position the at least one of the plurality of plates.
- 34. A method according to claim 32, further comprising the steps of:
- moving another type plate in a first direction to move another type plate to the imaging device; and
- moving the at least one of the plurality of plates in a second direction substantially perpendicular to the first direction to provide access to the particular type plate.
- 35. A method according to claim 32, wherein:
- each of the plurality of plates has a characteristic; and
- the characteristic of the particular type is different from the characteristic of other of the plurality of plates.
- 36. A method according to claim 35, wherein:
- the characteristic is size.
- 37. A method according to claim 32, wherein the particular type plate includes a slip sheet, and further comprising the step of:
- detecting the presence of the slip sheet.
- 38. A method according to claim 32, wherein the particular type plate includes a slip sheet, and further comprising the step of:
- removing the slip sheet from the particular type plate.
- 39. The method of claim 32, wherein the positioning provides access to the particular type plate without moving any of the plurality of plates along other than a single straight line.
- 40. The system of claim 32, further comprising the step of moving the transfer mechanism to a position between other of the plurality of plates to access the particular type plate.
