Claims
- 1. In a network for providing telecommunication service to a plurality of network subscribers, a method of estimating toll rates for a telecommunication service rate plan for at least one subscriber, the method comprising:receiving call data for sample calls, the call data specifying at least one of a specified telecommunication carrier, a time of day, a day of week, an optional calling plan, and a mileage band; calculating estimated rate data, including calculating estimated rate elements for the at least one of a specified telecommunication carrier, a time of day, a day of week, an optional calling plan, and a mileage band; using the estimated rate data, generating an upper bound and a lower bound for an estimated toll rate; and refining the upper bound and the lower bound to produce new estimated toll rates.
- 2. The method of claim 1 further comprising using interval analysis to calculate the estimated rate data.
- 3. The method of claim 1 wherein calculating the estimated rate data comprises generating an upper bound and lower bound for the estimated toll rate for the first minute of a call and for each additional minute of the call.
- 4. The method of claim 3 wherein generating an upper bound and a lower bound comprises, for at least one of a specified telecommunication carrier, time of day, day of week, optional calling plan, and mileage band, assigning a new first minute rate element to be the corresponding estimated upper bound and assigning a new additional minute rate element to be the corresponding estimated lower bound.
- 5. The method of claim 3 wherein receiving call data for sample calls comprises receiving call data for a 1-minute call, receiving call data for a 2-minute call and receiving call data for a 3-minute call.
- 6. The method of claim 5 further comprising:using the call data for the 1-minute call to generate an upper bound and lower bound on an estimated first minute rate; using the call data for the 2-minute call to generate an upper bound and lower bound for an additional minute rate based on the upper bound and the lower bound on the estimated first minute; and using the call data for the 3-minute call to refine the upper bound and the lower bound on the additional minute rate.
- 7. The method of claim 6 further comprising:subsequently, using the upper bound and the lower bound on the additional minute rate to refine bounds on the first minute rate.
- 8. The method of claim 1 wherein refining the upper bound and the lower bound comprises:iteratively narrowing the upper and lower bounds on a first minute rate and an additional minute rate until magnitude of percentage change between iterations of the interval between the upper and lower bound, for at least one of a first minute rate interval or an additional minute rate interval falls below a threshold or until completion of one of a predetermined number of iterations.
- 9. In a network for providing telecommunication service to a plurality of network subscribers, a method of estimating a toll rate for a telecommunication service rate plan for at least one subscriber of the plurality of network subscribers, the method comprising:receiving at least one final billing record corresponding to a plurality of sample calls, the final billing record including call data for at least one completed sample call, the call data including billed cost data; and iteratively processing the call data to determine and estimated toll rate for a telecommunication service rate plan.
- 10. The method of claim 9 wherein iteratively processing the call data comprises:processing first call data to produce a first estimated toll rate; processing second call data and the first estimated toll rate, to produce a next estimated toll rate; and processing subsequent call data and the next estimated toll rate to produce a subsequent estimated toll rate until a threshold criterion is met.
