Claims
- 1. A carbon crucible comprising,
- a vessel of porous carbon having a wall with a thickness, an outer surface, and an inner surface,
- a surface depth region of at least the inner surface being impregnated with additional carbon to close open porosity at the surface.
- 2. The crucible of claim 1 wherein the porous carbon is graphite.
- 3. The crucible of claim 2 wherein the additional carbon is graphitic pyrolytic carbon.
- 4. The crucible of claim 2 wherein the additional carbon is glassy carbon.
- 5. The crucible of claim 4 wherein at least the impregnated inside surface of the crucible is additionally coated with a layer of glassy carbon.
- 6. The crucible of claim 5 wherein the total porosity of the graphite which is not impregnated is more than 10%.
- 7. The crucible of claim 1 wherein the open porosity of the impregnated surface depth region of the graphite is less than 0.01%.
- 8. The crucible of claim 1 wherein at least a portion of a surface depth region of the outer surface is impregnated with additional carbon to form electrical current paths for resistance heating of the crucible.
