Claims
- 1. A method for assembling an optical component, comprising:
powering on an optical source to be pressed into an optical housing; pressing the optical source into the optical housing; measuring the optical output of the optical source while the optical source is pressed into the optical housing; controlling the pressing operation in accordance with the measured optical output; and measuring an optical offset of the optical component.
- 2. The method of claim 1, wherein the optical source is a laser.
- 3. The method of claim 1, wherein measuring comprises receiving an optical output from the optical source in a camera positioned in an optical output path of the optical source.
- 4. The method of claim 3, further comprising transmitting an electronic signal representative of the measured optical output to a microprocessor based controller for analysis and comparison of the optical output to a predetermined desired optical output.
- 5. The method of claim 1, wherein controlling the pressing operation further comprises comparing at least one of shape and contrast parameters of the measured optical output to the predetermined desired optical output to determine if the pressing operation should continue or be terminated.
- 6. The method of claim 1, wherein controlling the pressing operation in accordance with the measured optical output comprises pressing the optical source into the optical housing until the measured optical output is within a predetermined tolerance of a desired optical output.
- 7. The method of claim 6, wherein matching the measured optical output to the desired optical output comprises:
comparing the measured optical output to a stored optical output representative of the focal point.
- 8. The method of claim 7, wherein comparing comprises determining if a shape and contrast of the measured optical output matches the optical output representative of the focal point.
- 9. The method of claim 1, wherein measuring the optical offset comprises determining an x coordinate, y coordinate, and z coordinate with respect to a reference, wherein the x coordinate, y coordinate, and z coordinate correspond to a position of the optical output with respect to a desired optical output point.
- 10. The method of claim 9, further comprising mechanically altering the optical housing to correct for at least one of the measured optical offset and a measured pointing angle.
- 11. A method for assembling an optical component, comprising:
powering an optical source positioned in an optical housing; pressing an optical device into the optical housing; measuring an optical output of the optical device during the pressing step; controlling the pressing step in accordance with the measuring step; and determining an optical offset from the measuring step.
- 12. The method of claim 11, wherein the optical source comprises a laser and the optical device comprises a lens.
- 13. The method of claim 11, wherein pressing the optical device into the optical housing comprises:
monitoring the optical output of the optical source during the pressing operation; and controlling the pressing operation in accordance with changes in at least one of a contrast and a shape of the optical output.
- 14. The method of claim 13, wherein monitoring comprises positioning a camera in a path of the optical output.
- 15. The method of claim 11, further comprising mechanically altering the optical housing to correct for the measured optical offset.
- 16. The method of claim 15, wherein mechanically altering comprises removing a portion of an outer surface of the optical housing to align an axis of the optical output with an axis of the optical component when the optical component is received in a mount.
- 17. A method for assembling an optical component, comprising
pressing an optical device into an optical housing while simultaneously measuring the optical output of the device; terminating the pressing operation when characteristics of the measured optical output are within a predetermined range; measuring an optical offset of the device while the device is positioned for pressing; and mechanically altering the optical housing to compensate for the determined optical offset.
- 18. The method of claim 17, wherein mechanically altering the optical housing comprises milling an outer surface of the housing to correct for the optical offset once the optical component is mounted in a component mount.
- 19. The method of claim 17, wherein measuring the optical output comprises measuring at least one of a shape and a contrast of the optical output.
- 20. The method of claim 17, wherein measuring the optical output comprises comparing at least one of a measured contrast and a measured shape of the optical output to desired parameters to determine when to terminate the pressing operations.
- 21. The method of claim 17, comprising measuring a pointing angle of the optical output.
- 22. The method of claim 17, wherein measuring the optical offset comprises determining an x coordinate, y coordinate, and z coordinate with respect to a reference, wherein the x coordinate, y coordinate, and z coordinate correspond to a position of the optical output with respect to a desired focal point.
- 23. The method of claim 17, further comprising measuring the pointing angle.
- 24. The method of claim 17, wherein mechanically altering the optical housing comprises milling an outer surface of the optical housing to correct for the measured optical offset and a pointing angle.
