Claims
- 1. A method of making a tank joint comprising:providing a support plate; mounting a lower arm on the support plate; mounting an upper arm on the support plate spaced from the lower plate; sealing at least one tank skin between the lower and upper arms; providing at least one metal layer between the at least one tank skin and the lower and upper arms to seal the at least one tank skin between the lower and upper arms and for providing required pliability of a seal at cryogenic temperatures; and providing a purge chamber between the upper and lower arms.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein said metal layer comprises tin-indium.
- 3. The method of claim 2, wherein providing the at least one metal layer comprises co-curing a thin copper substrate onto at least a portion of the at least one tank skin.
- 4. The method of claim 2 further comprising applying local heat to at least a portion of the at least one metal layer to cause the portion of the at least one metal layer to re-flow, thereby providing means for repairing the seal between the at least one tank skin and at least one of the lower arm and the upper arm.
- 5. The method of claim 4, further comprising cold welding the at least one metal layer between the at least one tank skin and the lower and upper arms.
- 6. The method of claim 1, further comprising welding the lower and upper arms on the support plate.
- 7. The method of claim 1, further comprising mechanically fastening the at least one tank skin between the lower and upper arms.
- 8. The method of claim 1, further comprising coating at least a portion of the lower and upper arms with a protective layer.
- 9. The method of claim 1 or 4 wherein said joint is Y-shaped.
- 10. The method of claim 9 wherein said Y-shaped joint is capable of carrying loads in three directions thereby transmitting a portion of the load carried in the upper and lower arms into the support plate.
