Claims
- 1. A compound of the formula ##STR4## wherein X is selected from the group consisting of aryl, alkyl, imidate ester, imino ester, amidine, azide, isocyanate, and dithiocarbonate;
- wherein R' is a group selected from the group consisting of alkyl and aryl groups containing a hydroxyl moiety, and groups containing an O-linked sugar;
- wherein O is a carbon chain of 0-10 carbons; and
- wherein R is selected from the group consisting of phenyl and diphenyl groups.
- 2. The compound of claim 1 wherein R is selected from the group consisting of CHPh.sub.2 and CH.sub.2 Ph.
- 3. The compound of claim 1 wherein X is CPh.sub.2.
- 4. The compound of claim 1 wherein R is CHPh.sub.2 and X is CPh.sub.2.
- 5. The compound of claim 1 wherein R' is selected from the group consisting of --CH.sub.2 --OH and --CH(OH)CH.sub.3.
- 6. A method of creating an amino acid glycoside comprising the steps of:
- (a) synthesizing the compound of claim 1, wherein R' is selected from the group consisting of hydroxyl-containing groups and protected hydroxyl-containing groups, by first providing a starting material selected from the group consisting of an amino acid having a hydroxyl side chain and a hydroxyl-containing amino acid chain wherein the starting material has an .alpha.-amino group, then chemically modifying the .alpha.-amino group under suitable reaction conditions to produce an imino-bound intermediate, followed by treating the imino-bound intermediate with Ph.sub.2 C.dbd.NH and a chemical selected from the group consisting of CH.sub.2 Cl.sub.2 and CH.sub.3 CN; and
- (b) reacting the compound of step a with a sugar residue under suitable conditions wherein a hydroxyl residue in the R' group is substituted with the sugar residue.
- 7. The method of claim 6 wherein the sugar is a pyranose.
- 8. The method of claim 6 wherein the sugar is in the .alpha. conformation.
- 9. The method of claim 6 wherein the sugar is in the .alpha. conformation.
- 10. The method of claim 6 wherein the sugar is part of a polysaccharide.
- 11. A method of creating a glycosylated peptide comprising the steps of:
- (a) synthesizing the amino acid glycoside according to the method of claim 6; and
- (b) incorporating the glycoside into a peptide chain under conditions compatible with glycopeptide synthesis using solid-phase amino acid coupling or solution-phase amino acid coupling.
- 12. The method of claim 11 wherein the incorporating step comprises creating a peptide chain linked to a solid support.
- 13. The method of claim 11 wherein the incorporating step takes place in solution phase.
