Claims
- 1. A method for manufacturing optical fibers from a halide glass, said method comprising the steps of providing a molten halide glass and drawing a fiber from said molten halide glass; surrounding both the halide glass and fiber being drawn therefrom with a gas atmosphere containing an agent selected from a group consisting of SO.sub.2, acid anhydrides which chemically react with water, acid chlorides and acid fluorides; and then removing the fiber from said gas atmosphere and inserting the fiber into an acid neutralizing gas atmosphere.
- 2. The method of claim 1 including the step of reducing an OH band in the fiber by treating the fiber with a gaseous agent that reacts with moisture.
- 3. The method of claim 1 wherein the acid chlorides include at least one compound selected from the group consisting of: SOCl.sub.2 ; Cl.sub.2 ; and CF.sub.3 COCl.
- 4. The method of claim 1 wherein the acid fluorides include at least one compound selected from the group consisting of: SOF.sub.2 ; SO.sub.2 F.sub.2 ; COF.sub.2 ; and CF.sub.3 COF.
- 5. The method of claim 1 wherein the agent is trifluoroacetic acid anhydride.
- 6. The method of claim 1 wherein the agent does not react with ambient moisture until the atmosphere is heated to a temperature greater than room temperature.
- 7. The method of claim 1 wherein the acid neutralizing gas atmosphere contains NH.sub.3.
- 8. The method of claim 1 including the step of pre-drying the molten halide glass before the fiber is drawn in a gas atmosphere which contains an agent reacting with moisture.
- 9. The method of claim 2 wherein the gaseous agent is SOCl.sub.2 vapor.
