Claims
- 1. Hand portable and readily moveable, light weight and diminutive diagnostic apparatus for the selective provision of either transitory or permanent record visable image of portions of a human body in response to transmission of x-radiation through said body portions comprising
- manually manipulable means for supporting a source of x-radiation and either one of two selectable and independently positionable radiation responsive image producing means in a predetermined spaced apart relation not exceeding 50 centimeters, therebetween,
- said source of x-radiation consisting of an x-ray tube having a focal spot not exceeding 1 millimeter square in area for emitting a beam of x-rays centered about a predetermined axis,
- means for selectively and independently positioning in mutually exclusive relation only one of said two radiation responsive image producing means in said predetermined spatial relation with said source of x-radiation to permit interposition of a selected portion of a human body to be examined therebetween,
- said first one of said two independent image producing means including means for converting x-radiation passing through said interposed selected body portion into a transitory fluoroscopic visable image thereof,
- said second of said two independent image producing means including an x-radiation responsive cassette containing an unexposed photographic film for converting x-radiation which passes through said interposed body portion and then uninterruptedly impinges onto said cassette for forming a permanent visable and radiation responsive photographic image thereof,
- each of said first and second image producing means including independent x-radiation to visable light conversion screen means for producing a viewable transitory fluoroscopic or a permanent photographic image at a resolution level of at least 3.5 line pairs per millimeter,
- means responsive to the selected positioning of said first fluoroscopic image producing means in predetermined spatial relation with said radiation source for limiting the x-ray tube electron beam current to a value intermediate 50 microamperes and 300 microamperes, and
- means responsive to the selected positioning of said second photographic image producing means in predetermined spatial relation with said radiation source for limiting the x-ray tube electron beam current to a value intermediate 500 microamperes and 3 milliamperes.
- 2. Hand portable diagnostic apparatus as set forth in claim 1 wherein said x-ray tube electron beam current employed in association with said first image producing means is limited to a value intermediate 100 microamperes and 200 microamperes.
- 3. Hand portable diagnostic apparatus as set forth in claim 1 wherein said x-ray tube electron beam current employed in association with said second image producing means is limited to a value intermediate 750 microamperes and 1.5 milliamperes.
- 4. Hand portable diagnostic apparatus as set forth in claim 1 further including means to preclude positioning an object to be examined within 6.5 centimeters of said source of x-radiation.
- 5. Hand portable diagnostic apparatus as set forth in claim 1 including means responsive to the presence of said first image producing means for exposing said screen means absent interposition of an object to be examined, to radiation exposure in excess of 0.15 R/min but not exceeding 2.0 R/min.
- 6. Hand portable diagnostic apparatus as set forth in claim 1 including means responsive to the presence of said second image producing means for exposing said screen means, absent interposition of an object to be examined, to radiation exposure in excess of 2.5 R/min but not exceeding 15 R/min.
- 7. Hand portable diagnostic apparatus as set forth in claim 1 wherein said screen means is adapted to produce a viewable image at a resolution level of at least 5.0 line pairs per millimeter for both fluoroscopic and radiation responsive photographic imaging purposes.
- 8. Hand portable diagnostic apparatus as set forth in claim 1 including x-ray limiting means detachably associated with said x-ray tube for restricting the cross-sectional areal extent of the emitted x-ray beam to substantially that of the surface of said screen means included in said first image producing means at the point of impingement thereon.
