Claims
- 1. A method for blow forming a sheet of thermoplastic material to form a biaxially oriented container shaped article comprising:
- clamping said sheet of material over the mouth of a forming tube;
- heating said material to about its orientation temperature;
- applying fluid pressure to the face of said sheet in order to cause said sheet to enter into and substantially conform to the interior shape of said forming tube, without plug assist, to create said biaxially oriented article wherein the depth of draw of said container shaped article is sufficient for full orientation of the side walls; and
- preventing the material entering into and conforming to the shape of said forming tube from sticking to the walls of said forming tube, so as to permit the biaxially orientation to occur;
- wherein said container shaped article is an intermediate shape to the final shape desired and said method is further comprised of:
- placing said intermediate shape on a male form of predetermined size, shape, and texture;
- heating said intermediate shape to shrink it onto the surface of said male form to create said final shape of said article; and

- heating said rim to crystallize it, thereby making said rim heat stable;
- placing said intermediate on a male form of predetermined size, shape, and texture;
- heating said intermediate shape to shrink it onto the surface of said male form to create said container shaped article; and

- forming a biaxially oriented intermediate by blow molding a sheet of crystallizable thermoplastic material substantially at its orientation temperature, wherein said intermediate has a crystallizable rim portion;
- heating said rim of said blow molded biaxially oriented intermediate to crystallize said rim, thereby making said rim heat stable;
- placing said intermediate on a male form of a predetermined size, shape and texture after heating to crystallize said rim;
- heating said intermediate having said crystallized rim above the orientation temperature of said material to heat-shrink said intermediate onto the surface of said form to create said article; and
- removing said article from said form.
- 4. A method for producing a biaxially oriented, thermoplastic, unitary, open-ended, container-shaped article comprising:
- forming a biaxially oriented intermediate having a rim by blow molding a sheet of thermoplastic material substantially at its orientation temperature at a first station;
- heating said rim of said biaxially oriented intermediate at a second station to crystallize said rim thereby making the rim heat stable;
- placing said intermediate with the crystallized rim on a male form, at a third station, said male form having a predetermined size, shape and texture;
- heating said intermediate with the crystalllized rim above the orientation temperature of said material to heat-shrink said intermediate onto the surface of said form at said third station to create said article; and
- removing said article from said form.
- 5. A method for producing biaxially oriented, thermoplastic, container-shaped articles comprised of:
- forming a thermoplastic intermediate comprised of biaxially oriented side walls and bottom;
- placing said intermediate on a heated male form of a predetermined size, shape and texture;
- heating said intermediate above the orientation temperature of said thermoplastic material with heated air exiting said male form to heat shrink said intermediate onto the surface of said form to create said article, wherein said article has 75% or less of the volume of said intermediate; and
- removing said article from said form.
- 6. A method for producing biaxially oriented, thermoplastic, container-shaped articles from a biaxially oriented container shaped intermediate, comprised of a thermoplastic material, comprised of:
- placing said intermediate on a heated male form of a predetermined size, shape and texture;
- heating said intermediate above the orientation temperature of said thermoplastic material with heated air exiting said male form to heat shrink said intermediate onto the surface of said form to create said article; and
- removing said article from said form.
- 7. The method of claim 6 wherein said thermoplastic material is a crystallizable polymer.
- 8. The method of claim 7 wherein the crystallizable polymer is selected from the group consisting of polyesters, polyhexamethylene adipamids, polycaprolactam, and polyhexamethylene sebacamide.
- 9. The method of claim 7 wherein the crystallizable polymer is a polyester.
- 10. The method of claim 9 wherein the polyester is polyethylene terephthalate.
- 11. The method of claim 6 wherein said container shaped intermediate is blow formed from a sheet of thermoplastic material.
- 12. The method of claim 11 further comprised of:
- clamping said sheet of material over the mouth of a forming tube;
- heating said material to about its orientation temperature; and
- applying fluid pressure to the face of said sheet in order to cause said sheet to enter into and substantially conform to the interior shape of said forming tube to create said container-shaped intermediate.
- 13. The method of claim 12 and preventing the material entering into and conforming to the shape of said forming tube from sticking to the side walls of said forming tube.
- 14. The method of claim 12 wherein the fluid application step is done without plug assist.
