Claims
- 1. A method for producing a biaxially oriented, thermoplastic, container shaped article having a depth of draw of less than about 1.0 comprised of:
- forming a biaxially oriented container shaped intermediate, comprised of side walls and bottom, by blow forming a sheet of thermoplastic material that is maintained at or near its orientation temperature into a forming tube, wherein said forming tube contains means for uniformly preventing the portion of said side wall of said intermediate adjacent to the mouth of said forming tube from becoming biaxially oriented;
- placing said intermediate on a male form of a predetermined size, shape and texture;
- heating said intermediate above the orientation temperature of said thermoplastic material to heat-shrink said intermediate onto the surface of said form to create said article; and
- removing said article from said form.
- 2. A method for blow forming a sheet of unoriented thermoplastic material to form a biaxially oriented shaped article comprising:
- clamping said sheet of material over the mouth of a forming tube;
- heating said material to about its orientation temperature;
- applying a fluid pressure to the face of said sheet in order to cause said sheet to enter into and substantially conform to the interior shape of said forming tube, without plug assist, to create said biaxially oriented article, wherein the depth of draw of said container shaped article is sufficient for full orientation of the sidewalls; and
- preventing the material entering into and conforming to the shape of the said forming tube from sticking to the walls of said forming tube, so as to permit the biaxial orientation to occur, by carrying out the fluid pressure application step in the presence of air pressure introduced into said forming tube between the forming article and the interior wall of said forming tube.
- 3. The method of claim 2 wherein said container-shaped article is an intermediate shape to the final shape desired and said method is further comprised of:
- placing said intermediate shape on a male form of predetermined size, shape, and texture;
- heating said intermediate shape to shrink it onto the surface of said male form to create said final shape of said article; and
- removing it from said form.
- 4. The method of claim 3 wherein said intermediate has a crystallizable rim portion from said sheet and said method is further comprised of:
- heating said rim to crystallize it, thereby making said rim heat stable.
- 5. The method of claim 3 wherein said male form is heated.
- 6. The method of claim 2 wherein the thermoplastic material is a crystallizable polymer.
