Claims
- 1. A method of filling a container of unmeasured volume with carbon dioxide to a preselected density above the critical density comprising the steps of:
- (a) establishing, for the particular preselected density, that set of pressures each of which characteristically corresponds to a unique temperature higher than the saturation temperature of carbon dioxide for that density;
- (b) registering this 1-to-1 relationship between the pressure and temperature in a suitable form to be available for reference, or for comparison with indicated pressures or indicated temperatures;
- (c) supplying the carbon dioxide to the container;
- (d) controllably heating the container or the carbon dioxide being supplied to the container or both to a temperature such that the contents of the container, when the preselected density has been reached, are in single phase;
- (e) discontinuing the supply of carbon dioxide as the pressure in the container attains the registered pressure level corresponding to the instantaneous tempeature of the carbon dioxide in the container.
- 2. A method according to claim 1 wherein the contents of the container are raised during filling to a temperature in the range of from 20.degree. C. to 31.1.degree. C.
- 3. A method according to claim 1 wherein the contents of the container are raised during filling to a temperature in excess of 31.1.degree. C.
- 4. A method according to claim 1 wherein a target temperature is selected for the contents of the container and wherein the heating of the container and/or the carbon dioxide supplied to the container is controlled so that the contents of the container are close to that selected temperature at the time filling is complete;
- the said target temperature being selected anywhere in the range of temperatures near-above to below the critical temperature of carbon dioxide, but positively above the liquid saturation temperature of the carbon dioxide for the preselected density.
- 5. A method according to claim 4 wherein the top of the range from which the target temperature is selected is blood heat or 37.degree. C.
- 6. Carbon dioxide filling apparatus for filling containers with carbon dioxide to a preselected density comprising a reservoir of carbon dioxide, means for inducing a flow of carbon dioxide from the reservoir, valved coupling means for receiving a said container to be filled with carbon dioxide and providing communication between the container and the means for inducing flow to enable carbon dioxide to flow from the reservoir to the container, and heating means for heating the carbon dioxide flowing to the container and/or for heating the container when received by the coupling means to such an extent that the temperature of the carbon dioxide in the container when filled to the preselected density is above the lowest temperature at which the carbon dioxide is in the compressed liquid phase, and pressure and temperature sensing means for sensing the pressure and temperature of the carbon dioxide within the container;
- said lowest temperature being that temperature above which all the carbon dioxide in the container is in a single phase state whereby the pressure sensed is directly indicative of the density of the carbon dioxide in the container.
- 7. Apparatus according to claim 6 where the means for inducing the flow of carbon dioxide from the reservoir is a pump.
- 8. Apparatus according to claim 6 including a controller capable of registering a preselected target temperature and controlling the heating means to bring the carbon dioxide into the filled container near to that temperature.
- 9. Apparatus according to claim 6 including pressure and temperature indicators providing visual or other indications of the temperature and pressure sensed by the temperature and pressure sensing means, and means displaying data giving the characteristic pressure as it relates to temperature for the preselected density of the carbon dioxide when in a compressed liquids or GASS phase in a form suitable for comparison with indications from the indicators.
- 10. A method of filling a container with carbon dioxide to a preselected density, the method comprising the steps of supplying carbon dioxide to the container, monitoring pressure and temperature of the carbon dioxide within the container, raising the temperature of the container and/or carbon dioxide within the container and/or the carbon dioxide being supplied to the container to a level in the region near-above, at or below its critical temperature, and sufficient to cause the carbon dioxide within the container to enter a single compressed liquid phase or a single GASS phase before it is full to the preselected density, and discontinuing the supply of carbon dioxide to the container, when the carbon dioxide in the single phase condition within the container has achieved a pressure and temperature which corresponds to the preselected density.
