Claims
- 1. A method of forming a closed metal cell composite material, comprising the steps of:
- completely encapsulating a fluid or fluid-like cell filler substance within a structural metal to provide a filled and fully closed structural metal cell;
- providing a plurality of filled and fully closed structural metal cells to form an aggregate body; and
- bonding together the plurality of filled structural metal closed cells in an aggregate arrangement.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of encapsulating includes the steps of:
- forming sheet metal into a cell configuration;
- filling the sheet metal cell with a fluid or fluid-like filler; and
- sealing the cell.
- 3. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of encapsulating includes the step of:
- electrolytically depositing the structural metal onto pellets or particles of the cell filler substance.
- 4. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of encapsulating includes the step of depositing liquid metal onto pellets or particles of the cell filler substance.
- 5. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of encapsulating includes the step of depositing by vapor deposition the metal onto pellets or particles of the cell-filler substance.
- 6. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of encapsulating includes the step of:
- ion-implanting the cell-filler substance into the metal.
- 7. The method of claim 1 including the additional step of forming closed cell composite bodies from slurries or pastes of cells in a liquid medium.
- 8. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of bonding includes sintering or form pressing.
- 9. A method of forming a closed metal cell composite material, comprising the steps of:
- encapsulating a fluid or fluid-like cell filler substance within a structural metal to provide a filled and fully closed structural metal cell;
- providing a plurality of filled and fully closed structural metal closed structural metal cells to form an aggregate body;
- adding a binder to fill interstices and join the cells together; and
- bonding together the plurality of filled structural metal closed cells in an aggregate arrangement.
- 10. A method of forming a closed metal cell composite material, comprising the steps of:
- completely encapsulating a fluid or fluid-like cell filler substance within a structural metal cell wall to form a filled and fully closed structural metal cell;
- arranging a plurality of filled and fully closed structural metal cells to configure an aggregate body; and
- subsequently bonding together cell walls of adjoining closed cells to form a composite.
