Claims
- 1. A photosensitizer capable of binding viral, bacterial, or parasitic contaminants in a biological solution, and further capable of inactivating said viral, bacterial or parasitic contaminant upon irradiation without substantially impairing said biological solution, comprised of the formula: ##STR12## wherein .mu. is an integer of 1 ; X is an anionic counterion; Z is N or P; R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.4, R.sub.5, and R.sub.6 are independently halo; H; linear or branched alkyl of 1-10 carbon atoms; liner or branched alkoxy of 1-10 carbon atoms; (CH.sub.2).sub.m O(CH.sub.2).sub.p Z.sym.R'R"R"' or --O(CH.sub.2).sub.n Z.sym.R'R"R"' wherein n, m and p are independently integers from 1 to 10 and R',R", and R"' are independently H or linear or branched alkyl of 1 to 10 carbon atoms with the proviso that on each Z atom, not more than two of R',R", or R"'may by H; and at least on one of R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.4, R.sub.5 or R.sub.6 is --(CH.sub.2).sub.m O(CH.sub.2).sub.p Z.sym.R'R"R"' or --O(CH.sub.2).sub.n Z.sym.R'R"R"'.
- 2. The photosensitizer of claim 1 wherein R.sub.6 is selected from the group consisting of F, Cl, Br, and I.
- 3. The photosensitizer of claim 2 wherein R.sub.6 is Br.
- 4. The photosensitizer of claim 2 wherein R.sub.6 is Cl.
- 5. The photosensitizer of claim 1 wherein R.sub.2 is OCH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 N.sym.(CH.sub.2 CH.sub.3).sub.3 Br.sup.-.
- 6. The photosensitizer of claim 1 wherein R.sub.1 is CH.sub.3 or H.
- 7. The photosensitizer of claim 1 having the formula: ##STR13##
- 8. The photosensitizer of claim 1 having the formula: ##STR14##
- 9. The photosensitizer of claim 1 having the formula: ##STR15##
- 10. The photosensitizer of claim 1 having the formula: ##STR16##
- 11. A photosensitizer according to any one of claims 1-7 wherein one of R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.4, R.sub.5 or R.sub.6 is (CH.sub.2).sub.m O(CH.sub.2).sub.p Z.sym.R'R"R"' or --O(CH.sub.2).sub.n Z.sym.R'R"R"'.
