Claims
- 1. A structural member comprising
- a first top sheet member formed so as to have a top, one side wall extending downwardly from said top, and another side wall extending downwardly from said top, and
- a second top sheet member having a first generally vertically extending side wall, a top, and a second side wall extending downwardly from said top and having a lower edge,
- integral extensions of said side walls of said first member being bent outwardly and overlapping said side wall of said second member, and integral extensions of said first side wall of said second member being bent outwardly and extending inside said side walls of said first member, and
- a first closing sheet member secured to said flanges of said first top sheet member, and a second closing sheet member secured to said flanges of said second top sheet member.
- 2. A structural member as set forth in claim 1 wherein said side walls of said first member have respective lower edges, wherein said first member also has one flange extending outwardly from said lower edge of one of said first member side walls, and another flange extending outwardly from said lower edge of the other of said first member side walls, wherein said second member side wall has a lower edge, wherein said second member also has a flange extending outwardly from said lower edge of said second member side wall, and wherein integral extensions of said flanges of said first member overlap said flange of said second member.
- 3. A structural member as set forth in claim 1 wherein each of said closing sheet members is punch-locked to said flanges of said respective top sheet member.
- 4. A member as set forth in claim 1 wherein said first member has a top wall extending between said first member side walls, wherein said second member has a top wall extending from said second member side wall, and wherein an integral extension of said first member top wall overlaps said second member top wall.
- 5. A member as set forth in claim 4 wherein said top wall extension of said first member is punch-locked to said top wall of said second member.
- 6. An engine cradle for a passenger vehicle, said engine cradle comprising
- first, second, third and fourth elongated top sheet members each formed into a hat-shaped cross section along substantially the entire length thereof and having a planar top wall with opposed edges, one side wall extending downwardly from one top wall edge and having a lower edge, another side wall extending downwardly from the other top wall edge and having a lower edge, one flange extending outwardly from said lower edge of said one side wall, and another flange extending outwardly from said lower edge of said other side wall,
- said first member being connected to said second and fourth members, said second member being connected to said first and third members, said third member being connected to said second and fourth members, and said fourth member being connected to said third and first members so as to define a joint between said first and second members, a joint between said second and third members, a joint between said third and fourth members and a joint between said fourth and first members, and so that said member defines an opening between said four members, and
- first, second, third and fourth closing sheet members each being connected to said flanges of a respective one of said first, second, third and fourth top sheet members and closing substantially all of the interior of said respective top sheet member.
- 7. An engine cradle as set forth in claim 6 wherein one of said joints is formed by integral extensions of one side wall of one of the connected members being bent outwardly and extending inside said side walls of the other of the connected members.
- 8. An engine cradle as set forth in claim 6 wherein one of said joints is formed by integral extensions of said side walls of one of the connected members being bent outwardly and overlapping a side wall of the other of the connected members.
- 9. An engine cradle as set forth in claim 8 wherein one of said joints is also formed by an integral extension of said top wall of said one of the connected members overlapping said top wall of said other of the connected members.
- 10. An engine cradle as set forth in claim 6 wherein one of said joints is formed by integral extensions of one side wall of one of the connected members being bent outwardly and overlapping said side walls of the other of the connected members.
- 11. An engine cradle as set forth in claim 10 wherein said one of said joints is also formed by an integral extension of said top wall of said one of the connected members overlapping said top wall of said other of the connected members.
- 12. An engine cradle as set forth in claim 11 wherein said one of said joints is also formed by said top wall extension of said one of the connected members being punch-locked to said top wall of said other of the connected members.
- 13. An engine cradle as set forth in claim 6 wherein one of said joints is formed by extensions of at least one of said flanges of one of the connected members overlapping at least one of said flanges of the other of the connected members.
- 14. An engine cradle as set forth in claim 6 wherein each of said closing sheet members is punch-locked to said flanges of said respective top sheet member.
