Claims
- 1. A method of mist lubrication of a drill, and vacuum removal of drilling chips created when drilling a workpiece with the drill, while avoiding substantial contact of the lubricant or the drill chips with the workpiece, comprising:
- aligning a drill cavity in a slidable shuttle with a drill spindle, said cavity having top and bottom openings;
- pressing an apertured pressure foot attached beneath said shuttle and positioned with said aperture in said pressure foot aligned with said bottom opening in said cavity, against a workpiece to be drilled to hold said workpiece stationary with respect to the axis of said drill;
- applying rotational power to said spindle to rotate said spindle and an attached drill bit;
- blowing air and mist lubricant into said cavity through a blowing port in the side of said cavity while plunging said drill bit through said top and bottom openings in said cavity and into a workpiece positioned beneath said shuttle to drill a hole in said workpiece;
- suctioning said cavity through a suction port in the side of said cavity to suck the drilling chips made by said drill as it drilled the hole and before said chips can contact the surface of said workpiece.
- 2. A method of mist lubrication and chip removal as defined in claim 1, wherein:
- said aperture in said pressure foot is just slightly larger than said drill, whereby any lubricant that falls of the surface of said workpiece gets drilled off when the drill drills the hole, and there is no substantial surface on which the drill chips can land while they are being made and before they are sucked out of the cavity.
- 3. A method of mist lubrication of a cutting tool immediately prior to performing a cutting operation on a workpiece, and of removal of cutting chips as they are made during said cutting operation from the vacinity of the workpiece, comprising:
- enclosing the cutting portion of said cutting tool within a cavity having an opening in the bottom thereof for said cutting tool to contact said workpiece;
- drawing air by vacuum up through said opening and out of said cavity through a vacuum port in the side of said cavity;
- blowing a lubricant in mist form onto said cutting tool while said vacuum is on;
- whereby, said mist lubricant coats said cutting tool, and said air flow up through said opening in the bottom of said cavity and out said vacuum port entrains the balance of said mist lubricant and carries it out of said cavity, so that said workpiece does not become contaminated with lubricant.
- 4. The method defined in claim 3, further comprising:
- pressing the lower end of said cavity against said workpiece and lowering said cutting tool through said opening in the bottom of said cavity to perform said cutting operation on said workpiece, said opening being just slightly larger than said cutting tool so that said cutting chips have nowhere on workpiece to land, and instead are swirled up by said air blowing into said cavity and are entrained in said air flow out of said vacuum port and are thus wisked out of said cavity through said vacuum port.
