Claims
- 1. A method of inhibiting the gross build-up of a cold-setting foundry sand mixture upon elements of a mixing machine exposed to the mixture during the process of mixing the mixture, the foundry sand mixture having a tendency to adhere to and to set upon said elements to build-up a coating on said elements; the method comprising the steps of first discharging on to said elements while the mixing machine is substantially empty a fluid inhibitor operable to prevent or retard the setting of the mixture on said elements, and subsequently introducing the mixture into the mixing machine for the mixing operation.
- 2. The method of claim 1, wherein the fluid inhibitor is also discharged on to said elements after mixing the mixture in the mixing machine.
- 3. The method of claim 1, wherein the mixture is mixed in batches and the fluid inhibitor is discharged on to said elements in between the mixing of successive batches.
- 4. The method of claim 1, wherein the fluid inhibitor is in liquid form and is sprayed into the mixing machine.
- 5. The method of claim 4, wherein the liquid inhibitor also acts as a lubricant.
- 6. The method of claim 4, wherein the foundry sand mixture is a sand/resin/acid mixture, the liquid inhibitor being an alkaline water-based solution containing ammonia and a detergent.
- 7. The method of claim 4, wherein the liquid inhibitor comprises water and small proportions of a substance which prevents or retards the setting of said mixture and of a detergent.
- 8. The method of claim 4, wherein the liquid inhibitor is an alkaline water-based solution containing about 3% by weight ammonia.
- 9. The method of claim 1, wherein the fluid inhibitor is in gaseous form and is applied under pressure to said elements, to cool said elements.
- 10. The method of claim 9, wherein the gas comprises carbon dioxide.
- 11. The method of claim 9, wherein the gas is substantially carbon dioxide.
