Claims
- 1. A method of preparing a switchable film layer of an oxide of vanadium upon a substrate comprising:
- (a) preparing a solution containing vanadium alkoxide in a solution concentration of about 2 to 6 weight percent equivalent VO.sub.2 ;
- (b) applying said solution to said substrate to dispose a thickness of about 2,000 to 10,000 Angstroms of continuous film of the solution upon the substrate;
- (c) drying said film in a moisture free environment;
- (d) first heating said dried film in an oxidizing atmosphere to remove the organic components from said film to produce a polycrystalline film which is substantially vanadium pentoxide;
- (e) secondly heating the polycrystalline vanadium pentoxide film in a reducing atmosphere to convert said film to the desired oxide of vanadium; and
- (f) wherein the solution concentration and the applied film thickness are such that following drying, first heating and second heating the resulting vanadium oxide film is switchable from an opaque reflective mode to a transmissive mode.
- 2. The method set forth in claim 1, wherein the solution is applied to the substrate by dipping the substrate surface to be covered into the solution and pulling the substrate therefrom at a rate which leaves the desired solution layer thickness upon the substrate.
- 3. The method set forth in claim 2, wherein the pull rate is about 85 centimeters per minute for a solution concentration of about 2 to 6 weight percent equivalent VO.sub.2.
- 4. The method set forth in claim 1, wherein plural layers of oxide film are provided upon the substrate by following the first heating of the applied film with successive application of film layers with repeated first heating to remove organic components from the applied film layer prior to application of the succeeding film layer and with the second heating taking place after all plural layers are applied.
- 5. The method set forth in claim 1, wherein the second heating is carried out for a sufficient time at a temperature sufficient to convert the film to vanadium oxide (VO.sub.2).
